Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Terrorists' strength derives from the difficulty in defining the term terrorism itself ... Whether terrorism represents a resurgent barbarism to be combatted by all civilization or a new and legitimate mode of armed conflict remains a topic of debate. The debate is reflected in this volume, the collective product of 43 authors ... The anthology ... presents a kaleidoscope of philosophies, prejudices, and purposes ... [and is] an ... illustration of how the world addresses the topic of terrorism and incidentally why terrorism persists"--Page xix-xx.
Book Synopsis Paraguay in the 1970s by : James Painter
Download or read book Paraguay in the 1970s written by James Painter and published by University of London Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical research has dispelled a number of myths surrounding Word War I: whereas the outbreak of war was greeted by the urban middle classes with frenzied enthusiasm, in working-class areas and smaller towns the mood was more of foreboding. Little attention has so far been paid to those who opposed the war and its underlying culture of militarism, though opposition to war and militarism has a distinguished German pedigree. This volume explores opposition to war and militarism among a range of German-language authors in a period roughly defined by two international bestsellers: Suttner's 'Die Waffen nieder' (1889) and Remarque's 'Im Westen nichts Neues' (1928). Major figures (Kraus, Schnitzler, Zweig) have not lacked attention, but some of the authors discussed here (Andreas Latzko, Hans Chlumberg) are still far from being household names. These essays remind us that the period's opposition to war and militarism manifested itself in a broad range of literary forms and publications, providing a different emphasis from previous volumes exploring connections between German-language literature and pacifism.

Book Synopsis Human Rights Diplomacy by : Rein Mullerson
Download or read book Human Rights Diplomacy written by Rein Mullerson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this insightful analysis of human rights diplomacy Rein Mullerson examines the way foreign policy instruments are used to promote human rights abroad as well as how human rights issues are used for the sake of other foreign policy aims. The book explores the relationship between human rights and international stability, the role of non-governmental organisations, the business community and mass media in formulating human rights agendas for governments and inter-governmental organisations. Also addressed are issues such as the universality of human rights in a multi-cultural world and the impact of religious and nationalistic extremism. Rein Mullerson concludes by looking at the role of the UN and other international bodies engaged in the promotion of human rights and how military force can be an option in settling violations The author argues that it tends to be regimes that are hostile to human rights which in turn cause instability in the international community. Throughout the work it is demonstrated that a concern for human rights is legitimate because of the impact they have on international relations and because of the common bonds that link all people.

This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, victims of human rights abuses have filed civil lawsuits in U.S. courts. This litigation provides victims a voice and promotes accountability for violations of international law. This is the story of Filartiga v. Pena-Irala, one of the most significant examples of human rights litigation in the U.S., presented as a documentary history – an approach to legal scholarship that has become increasingly popular in recent years. Unlike traditional casebooks, this book emphasizes the dynamic nature of law. The pleadings and documents appear with minimal editing and are supplemented through commentary by various litigation participants. Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint.

This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 940 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the Inter-American Yearbook on Human Rights , like the volumes that precede it, includes information concerning the activities of the Organization of American States in the promotion & protection of human rights. It begins with the composition of the Commission & Court, including the biographies of the members, 1988 activities of each body, reproductions of resolutions & reports by the Commission & historic correspondences & decisions by the Court. Also included is an update on the status of the American Convention on Human Rights, which reports the relation of each country to that instrument, followed by resolutions adopted in 1988 by the OAS General Assembly. The year 1988 distinguished itself particularly because the Inter-American Court of Human Rights made its first decision on a contentious case, the Velásquez Rodríguez case (Honduras). This historic decision is reproduced in Part Three of this volume. Another important 1988 development in the Inter-American system was the Protocol of San Salvador, or Additional Protocol to the American Convention on Human Rights for Economic, Social & Cultural Rights, reproduced in Part Four. Also included, in its entirety, is a report on the human rights situation in Haiti, a report requested by the Organization of American States Permanent Council in Resolution 502. The Inter-American Yearbook on Human Rights is completely bilingual (English & Spanish).

Book Synopsis Aspects of Language Contact by : Thomas Stolz
Download or read book Aspects of Language Contact written by Thomas Stolz and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume brings together fourteen original contributions to the on-going debate about what is possible in contact-induced language change. The authors present a number of new vistas on language contact which represent new developments in the field. In the first part of the volume, the focus is on methodology and theory. Thomas Stolz defines the study of Romancisation processes as a very promising laboratory for language-contact oriented research and theoretical work based thereon. The reader is informed about the large scale projects on loanword typology in the contribution by Martin Haspelmath and on contact-induced grammatical change conducted by Jeanette Sakel and Yaron Matras. Christel Stolz reviews processes of gender-assignment to loan nouns in German and German-based varieties. The typology of loan verbs is the topic of the contribution by Søren Wichmann and Jan Wohlgemuth. In the articles by Wolfgang Wildgen and Klaus Zimmermann, two radically new approaches to the theory of language contact are put forward: a dynamic model and a constructivism-based theory, respectively. The second part of the volume is dedicated to more empirically oriented studies which look into language-contact constellations with a Romance donor language and a non-European recipient language. Spanish-Amerindian (Guaraní, Otomí, Quichua) contacts are investigated in the comparative study by Dik Bakker, Jorge Gómez-Rendón and Ewald Hekking. Peter Bakker and Robert A. Papen discuss the influence exerted by French on the indigenous languages ofCanada. The extent of the Portuguese impact on the Amazonian language Kulina is studied by Stefan Dienst. John Holm looks at the validity of the hypothesis that bound morphology normally falls victim to Creolization processes and draws his evidence mainly from Portuguese-based Creoles. For Austronesia, borrowings and calques from French still are an understudied phenomenon. Claire Moyse-Faurie’s contribution to this topic is thus a pioneer’s work. Similarly, Françoise Rose and Odile Renault-Lescure provide us with fresh data on language contact in French Guiana. The final article of this collection by Mauro Tosco demonstrates that the Italianization of languages of the former Italian colonies in East Africa is only weak. This volume provides the reader with new insights on all levels of language-contact related studies. The volume addresses especially a readership that has a strong interest in language contact in general and its repercussions on the phonology, grammar and lexicon of the recipient languages. Experts of Romance language contact, and specialists of Amerindian languages, Afro-Asiatic languages, Austronesian languages and Pidgins and Creoles will find the volume highly valuable.
