Book excerpt: In 1990, I had an adventure. These pages reflect the feelings and emotions I experienced while living and working in Mexico. After 12 years as a mid-level manager at Weight Watchers International, I took the assignment in Mexico City to help a franchise owner figure out why her territory (Mexico) was losing money. Originally, I went as a consultant. My Spanish was rusty, but within a short time, the staff trusted me enough to confide that the manager was embezzling. I hired an independent Mexican accounting firm to audit the books and discovered that the rumors were true.I ended up running the operation for a year until I could find a permanent replacement. During that year, I flew back to the United States once a month to check in on my elderly mom and decompress for a couple of weeks. I found that even though my Spanish got better with each passing month, I could not fluidly express my emotions and reactions. Because of this, I started writing my impressions. What follows are my collected recollections and some letters that I had sent to my mom.Linda P. Charman

Book excerpt: Jack Randell, skipper of a Lunenburg-based rum-running schooner, sparked a diplomatic row in 1929 when he tried to outrun the United States Coast Guard. Henry More Smith was a nineteenth-century thief so brazen that he swiped law books from the office of a Halifax judge, then returned them to collect a reward. Samuel Herbert Dougal was a monster who preyed on women and likely murdered two of his wives while serving with the British Army in Halifax in the 1880s. And Irish-American terrorists hatched a fiendish plot to blow up a Royal Navy warship anchored in Halifax Harbour in 1883. Their target? Prince George of Wales, a midshipman on board who would one day ascend to the British throne as King George V. Madness, Mayhem and Murder, the sequel to 2020's bestselling Daring, Devious & Deadly, is a collection of sixteen more true tales of crime and justice. The stories are drawn from almost two centuries of Nova Scotia's history, from the province's first murder case in 1749 to its last execution in 1937. The cast includes pirates and privateers, terrorists, shadowy Confederate agents, and a motley crew of smugglers, thieves, killers, duel-fighting gentlemen and a few people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. These are stranger-than-fiction tales of crime and punishment, tragedy and redemption, and guilt and innocence, with a lot to say about the past - and the unending quest for justice.

Book excerpt: Inevitable death and our agony to attain Utopia have made existence a form of pathology. We are left with the secret need for redemption which few of us will understand or witness. This need still lives in acts of love, courage and art. In the images included in this book it is found in the conjoined destinies of artist and subject, phantoms on either side of that curtain we call photography. Implicit in these photographs is the brutal extreme of their purpose and an intimation however distant to their makers that something was manifested beyond the event itself.

But in order to do so, she must marry one of two gentlemen. The trouble is, she might be falling in love with another man entirely. 1819, Kent, England—Everything changed the moment Amelia became heiress to Moorington Cross. A young widow and patient at Cluett’s Mesmeric Hospital, Amelia is stunned to learn that her doctor—and the only father figure she’s ever known—has altered his will naming her his primary beneficiary. Such an opportunity is beyond what any Regency-era woman could dare to dream—especially one with a sleeping disorder that finds her falling asleep at the most random of times. There is, however, a perplexing condition attached to the will: she must wed one of two named men, wholly unknown to her. Doing so would provide her with a secure future. But how can she marry one of these men when her heart is intrigued by the charming solicitor, Mr. Hawkins? Everything takes on a new sense of urgency—and danger—when Mr. Cluett is found dead in his bedchamber only hours after announcing his updated will. Now Amelia only has thirty days to decide which man she will marry. But she is just as determined to uncover the truth of her benefactor’s demise with the help of Mr. Hawkins. After all, this sudden turn of events couldn’t merely be a coincidence—could it? From award-winning author Abigail Wilson, Twilight at Moorington Cross is a mysterious Regency romance full of intrigue, mesmeric treatments, and abandoned corridors that proves love is the greatest testament of all. Book excerpt: Street violence in Mexico’s tourist areas follow a 1990 financial meltdown, brought to life through two Americans left behind after a major evacuation effort by the U.S. Navy. These Americans tell their story of escape, integrating involvement by US. Navy personnel, The White House, the Mexican government, a middle class Mexican family together with a radical and unstable Mexican professor who seeks a new Mexico. Financial crisis is almost a regular event in Latin America but this differs from most, spinning out of control, bringing together a political crisis to the White House, international conflict with a Mexican governor, and on through the respective armies, to Mexicans and Americans caught up in the ensuing violence. Common Americans and Mexicans, each with their own personal stories to tell, illustrate the quick effect that politics can have on ordinary citizens. Ultimately, the crisis is resolved in major part due to the insights and unusual bravery of Americans and Mexicans. The President, military leadership, U.S. Navy initiatives, street violence, recession, romance and legal punishment are all a part of The Mexican Incident.

Book excerpt: “Brought back into print after 14 years and published in paperback for the first time, this leisurely meditation on the art of acting and on the author’s life in that art demonstrates a good-natured sense of humor and an engaging style. In a series of essays, Broun gently knocks the theatrical world—the audience traveling from small town to small town only to have a production fold right outside of New York; the trauma of doing live TV; getting bit parts in commercials or horror movies after years of classical training; and so on. Oddly enough, while deglamorizing his profession, he makes a good case for it: he enjoyed his life . . . and he’s written a very enjoyable book about it.” —Publisher’s Weekly
