Book excerpt: Stories in Reflections are reflections of the imagination. They are for fun and are fiction. However, some might suggest a way of seeing what you might not normally notice in everyday life. So often, more is happening around us than we might believe, but we have our own responsibilities that require our attention and that usurp time simply for contemplation. It never hurts to be vigilant of our surroundings and to notice the small, keen details that are always a part of existence. Sometimes we miss the wondrous beauty that is everywhere, or unusual presences, or out of balance emotions - the complexities that are interwoven prisms everywhere we look if only we actually take the time to see them. Some of the stories in Reflections are an unassuming nod to science fiction, some are about the cyclical aspect of Nature, some are about people and personalities, and some are about what we might consider to be unassuming parts of daily life that nevertheless can take sudden sharp turns perhaps when we least expect them. The stories are generally quiet and unpretentious, but a few can nevertheless be a little startling at times. There is a general ecosystemic approach to all the stories, and that serves to help link them even though they might not seem to be similar to each other in any other way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mayberry Reflections: The Early Years summarizes plot lines of episodes through the first four seasons of the popular television series and adds reflections by the author on how the simple truths expressed in each show retain their meaning, even in the face of today's more complex society. The purpose of this book is really quite simple. The author hopes that as you read each reflection you will take a few minutes to pause and be transformed back to another time and place. As we all know, Mayberry is a fictitious place. But the ideals and values that were instilled in the people that lived there are very real. They were important to the people of Mayberry, and they should continue to be important to each and every one of us no matter whom we may be or where we might live.

With this work he has attempted to simply record for his children, grandchildren, and others the wonderful events of his life as he experienced them. The book covers thousands of miles of travel along with living and working with peoples of differing cultures on three continents and in the Caribbean, five foreign countries, and fifteen different states spanning the nation from coast to coast to coast.

Book excerpt: In Hello, It’s Me, pop culture historian Chris Epting celebrates the cultural touchstones of the past 40 years—the music, movies, television, hobbies, and fads that have defined recent generations. Whether it’s shooting hoops with NBA legend Elgin Baylor, drinking whiskey in a Radio City Music Hall broom closet with Ron Wood and Rod Stewart while thousands of fans scream from below, sharing a milkshake with Jerry Lewis, running into Alfred Hitchcock’s stomach as a young child, or jumping on a trampoline with Sally Struthers, Chris Epting takes us on his own strange trip through time, space and hula hoops. Beginning in the 1970s and continuing through the 1980s, 1990s, and up to the present day, Epting writes about the humorous, ironic, poignant, and inspiring moments he’s experienced with a host of pop-culture icons—Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Jay Leno, Johnny Thunders, Edward Albee, John Cheever, Milton Berle, etc.—as well as his personal memories of the era’s most famous pop-culture fads, products, and gimmicks—Pet Rocks, lava lamps, mood rings, 8-track tapes, bootleg records, Zotz, halter tops, strawberry wine. . . .

Now I understand why it is important to accept Him as your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Not only was I blinded, but I could have been dead and in hell. I thank and praise God for His grace and mercy on me; for enlightening me, caring for me and for giving me hope. For loving me and for who I am. I thank Him for teaching me the truth. For letting me be able to write this book. I want the world to know young and old, no matter what is wrong or went wrong in your life, you can make it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adirondacks have been written about since they were first spied by Europeans more than five hundred years ago. Yet for most of the intervening centuries, few of those writers lived in the region of which they wrote--they were not part of the landscape. That has changed in recent years as writers have moved to the Adirondacks and formed a literary community. Perhaps inspired by these writers, longtime residents have discovered that they, too, could be part of such a community. From scratching out a living in the harsh landscape to the wonders of a moonlit cross-country ski, these writers celebrate life in the Adirondacks. In this remarkable collection of essays, the experiences of Adirondack natives are interwoven with the land in a part of America that is both demanding and rewarding.

Sometimes we are knocked down-and even out-by circumstances within or beyond our control. That's life. But these moments can be opportunities to tap into inner strength and start over. By sharing how he treated failure as a way to start over, Matt is now a nationally sought-after speaker and success coach to audiences of more than 100,000 people per year for Fortune 500 companies, NFL and NBA teams, government and nonprofit groups, professional associations, and universities. In WINNING PLAYS, he presents his strategies to survive and thrive in the real world, no matter what gets thrown your way. Just as no football team can be successful without a solid game plan, you can't be successful without one either. This book is full of Matt's inspirational, motivational, and prescriptive advice, such as: be authentic, create opportunities, power through adversity, reaffirm your goals, rebuild, and many other strategies for developing your own personal game plan to succeed in business and in life.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together for the first time more than two dozen of Daphne PataiOs incisive and at times satirical essays dealing with the academic and intellectual orthodoxies of our time. Patai draws on her years of experience in an increasingly bizarre academic world, where a stifling politicization threatens genuine teaching and learning. Addressing the rise of feminist dogma, the domination of politics over knowledge, the shoddy thinking and moralizing that hide behind identity politics, and the degradation of scholarship, her essays offer a resounding defense of liberal values. Patai takes aim at the unctuous and also dangerous posturing that has brought us restrictive speech codes, harassment policies, and a vigilante atmosphere, while suppressing plain speaking about crucial issues. But these trenchant essays are not limited to academic life, for the ideas and practices popularized there have spread far beyond campus borders. Included are two new pieces written especially for this volume, one on the bullying tactics of a famous feminist and the other on Islamic fundamentalism.

While I cannot confirm that supposition, I can report that I am never at a loss for an opinion on any topic. This book is a compilation of rants, reactions, responses and reflections on a diverse list of topics. Some of the topics include: gun control in the USA, Naturopathic medicine, modern miracles, salt consumption, eating bacon, bicycle fishermen, chain gangs and the war on drugs. The latter portion of the book contains reactions and reflections based upon our three month visit to Thailand and Cambodia. This section includes reactions and reflections on topics such as the Bamboo Train, Chiang Mai, the killing fields of Cambodia, the flying chicken restaurant, 7-11 stores, washing elephants and a host of other bizarre experiences.
