Book excerpt: 'Maya and the Sea Dragon' is a fantasy adventure playscript highlighting Sydney Harbour's amazing sea life. Seven-year-old Maya has been dreaming about a sea dragon waking underneath the harbour. She meets a young hermit crab and seahorse on the beach and travels with them underwater to the Seaweedy Bay Home for Elderly Sea Folk. Its unusual occupants include an elderly ex-opera singer mermaid, deaf but invincibly optimistic, and a rock lobster who enjoys practical jokes. The friends perform the seahorse greeting ritual and underwater school song for the residents. When two erratic submariners who have been lost around Sydney Harbour for decades find a bomb nearby, the three decide to find help to defuse it. A weedy sea dragon advises them to ask Samsara, the ancient sea dragon. Despite the dangers he poses, Maya persuades him to help. She promises to send Samsara to a new home in the stars because Sydney Harbour is so crowded and polluted. Maya also agrees to help inspire others to clean up the water, since Samsara is leaving an egg behind to hatch. However, they discover the bomb is just a cannonball. But the sea creatures do manage to send Samsara into space, and Maya returns. Her grandfather lovingly puts her exciting tale down to an active imagination. Accurate and fascinating information about sea creatures is an integral part of the story, including that male seahorses become pregnant and give birth. The need to look after the environment is clear, along with thinking about the sea from its inhabitants' point of view. This book was commissioned by Marian Street Theatre for Young People to celebrate its fiftieth birthday. It will be performed in Sydney in July 2019.

Book excerpt: A revolutionary new interpretation of ancient Maya art and culture Maya art and hieroglyphs constitute one of the world's most fascinating, visually striking, and complex systems of expression. Most scholarly interpretations of Maya art and culture have emphasized that this ancient civilization was oriented toward inland centers and preoccupied with the blood of royal lineage and ritual sacrifice. Drawing on recent archaeological discoveries and developments in deciphering Maya glyphs, this groundbreaking volume presents a revisionist reading that shifts the emphasis of interpretation to the mythic power of the sea as the basis of a larger, deeper cultural narrative and history for the Maya. Surrounded by the sea in all directions, the Maya viewed water as a source of both life and danger. Through the artworks presented--including acknowledged masterpieces and many never before exhibited in the United States--readers will gain a new appreciation for water's influence on Maya cosmology, its role in their interpretation of the supernatural, as well as its impact on Maya cross-cultural contacts, trading practices, and power dynamics. Essays by prominent scholars provide an interdisciplinary context for understanding Maya art as well as new interpretations of traditional iconography and symbolism. Accompanying a monumental exhibition comprising almost 100 artworks ranging from carved stone monuments to delicate jade sculptures, this compelling, richly illustrated publication will fundamentally transform the interpretation of Maya art. Published in association with the Peabody Essex Museum Exhibition Schedule: Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts (3/27/10 - 7/18/10) Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas (8/29/10 - 1/2/11) St. Louis Art Museum (2/13/11 - 5/8/11)

Book excerpt: For hundreds of years, Maya artists and scholars used hieroglyphs to record their history and culture. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, archaeologists, photographers, and artists recorded the Maya carvings that remained, often by transporting box cameras and plaster casts through the jungle on muleback. The New Catalog of Maya Hieroglyphs, Volume I: The Classic Period Inscriptions is a guide to all the known hieroglyphic symbols of the Classic Maya script. In the New Catalog Martha J. Macri and Matthew G. Looper have produced a valuable research tool based on the latest Mesoamerican scholarship. An essential resource for all students of Maya texts, the New Catalog is also accessible to nonspecialists with an interest in Mesoamerican cultures. Macri and Looper present the combined knowledge of the most reliable scholars in Maya epigraphy. They provide currently accepted syllabic and logographic values, a history of references to published discussions of each sign, and related lexical entries from dictionaries of Maya languages, all of which were compiled through the Maya Hieroglyphic Database Project. This first volume of the New Catalog focuses on texts from the Classic Period (approximately 150-900 C.E.), which have been found on carved stone monuments, stucco wall panels, wooden lintels, carved and painted pottery, murals, and small objects of jadeite, shell, bone, and wood. The forthcoming second volume will describe the hieroglyphs of the three surviving Maya codices that date from later periods.

This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-awaited resource complements its companion volume on Classic Period monumental inscriptions. Authors Martha J. Macri and Gabrielle Vail provide a comprehensive listing of graphemes found in the Dresden, Madrid, and Paris codices, 40 percent of which are unique to these painted manuscripts, and discuss current and past interpretations of these graphemes. The New Catalog uses an original coding system developed for the Maya Hieroglyphic Database Project. The new three-digit codes group the graphemes according to their visual, rather than functional, characteristics to allow readers to see distinctions between similar signs. Each entry contains the grapheme’s New Catalog code, an image, the corresponding Thompson number, proposed syllabic and logographic values, calendrical significance, and bibliographical citations. Appendices and an index of signs from both volumes contain images of all graphemes and variants ordered by code, allowing readers to search for graphemes by visual form or by their proposed logographic and phonetic values. Together the two volumes of the New Catalog represent the most significant updating of the sign lists for the Maya script proposed in half a century. They provide a cutting-edge reference tool critical to the research of Mesoamericanists in the fields of archaeology, art history, ethnohistory, and linguistics, and a valuable resource to scholars specializing in comparative studies of writing systems and related disciplines.

Not many months have passed since teenager Alexander Cold followed his bold grandmother into the heart of the Amazon to uncover its legendary Beast. This time, reporter Kate Cold escorts her grandson and his closest friend, Nadia, along with the photographers from International Geographic, on a journey to another location far from home. Entering a forbidden sovereignty tucked in the frosty peaks of the Himalayas, the team's task is to locate a sacred statue and priceless oracle that can foretell the future of the kingdom, known as the Golden Dragon. In their scramble to reach the statue, Alexander and Nadia must use the transcendent power of their totemic animal spirits—Jaguar and Eagle. With the aid of a sage Buddhist monk, his young royal disciple, and a fierce tribe of Yeti warriors, Alexander and Nadia fight to protect the holy rule of the Golden Dragon—before it can be destroyed by the greed of an outsider.
