Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to put together in one place the basic elementary techniques for solving problems in maxima minima other than the methods of calculus and linear programming. The emphasis is not on individual problems, but on methods that solve large classes of problems. The many chapters of the book can be read independently, without references to what precedes or follows. Besides the many problems solved in the book, others are left to the reader to solve, with sketches of solutions given in the later pages.

It has the look and feel of the calculus book you likely use right now (Stewart, Thomas & Finney, etc.). The explanations of new concepts is clear, written for someone who does not yet know calculus. Each section ends with an exercise set with ample problems to practice & test skills (odd answers are in the back).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you like problem solving, this book belongs on your shelf. Some knowledge of linear or abstract algebra is needed for a few of the problems, but most require nothing beyond calculus, and many should be accessible to high school students. The book centers on solutions which are elegant, instructive, and clear. Often several solutions to the same problem are presented. There are many hints and comments to help you and to put solutions in a broader perspective. Indices are provided which may be especially helpful to problem solving classes and to teams of individuals preparing for contests such as the Putnam exam.

Book excerpt: The ideal resource for promoting active learning in flipped classroom environments, Calculus: Multivariable, 8th Edition brings calculus to real life with relevant examples and a variety of problems with applications from the physical sciences, economics, health, biology, engineering, and economics. Emphasizing the Rule of Four—viewing problems graphically, numerically, symbolically, and verbally—this popular textbook provides students with numerous opportunities to master key mathematical concepts and apply critical thinking skills to reveal solutions to mathematical problems. Developed by Calculus Consortium based at Harvard University, Calculus: Multivariable uses a student-friendly approach that highlights the practical value of mathematics while reinforcing both the conceptual understanding and computational skills required to reduce complicated problems to simple procedures. The new eighth edition further reinforces the Rule of Four, offers additional problem sets and updated examples, and supports complex, multi-part questions through new visualizations and graphing questions powered by GeoGebra.

Book excerpt: The authors present twenty icons of mathematics, that is, geometrical shapes such as the right triangle, the Venn diagram, and the yang and yin symbol and explore mathematical results associated with them. As with their previous books (Charming Proofs, When Less is More, Math Made Visual) proofs are visual whenever possible. The results require no more than high-school mathematics to appreciate and many of them will be new even to experienced readers. Besides theorems and proofs, the book contains many illustrations and it gives connections of the icons to the world outside of mathematics. There are also problems at the end of each chapter, with solutions provided in an appendix. The book could be used by students in courses in problem solving, mathematical reasoning, or mathematics for the liberal arts. It could also be read with pleasure by professional mathematicians, as it was by the members of the Dolciani editorial board, who unanimously recommend its publication.

Book excerpt: An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis. The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives. In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There seems to be two types of books on inequalities. On the one hand there are treatises that attempt to cover all or most aspects of the subject, and where an attempt is made to give all results in their best possible form, together with either a full proof or a sketch of the proof together with references to where a full proof can be found. Such books, aimed at the professional pure and applied mathematician, are rare. The first such, that brought some order to this untidy field, is the classical "Inequalities" of Hardy, Littlewood & P6lya, published in 1934. Important as this outstanding work was and still is, it made no attempt at completeness; rather it consisted of the total knowledge of three front rank mathematicians in a field in which each had made fundamental contributions. Extensive as this combined knowledge was there were inevitably certain lacunre; some important results, such as Steffensen's inequality, were not mentioned at all; the works of certain schools of mathematicians were omitted, and many important ideas were not developed, appearing as exercises at the ends of chapters. The later book "Inequalities" by Beckenbach & Bellman, published in 1961, repairs many of these omissions. However this last book is far from a complete coverage of the field, either in depth or scope.
