Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maurice's Art of Dancing: An Autobiographical Sketch With Complete Descriptions of Modern Dances and Full Illustrations Showing the Various Steps and PositionsThose years at the Sisters' school are rather vague. I certainly did not study very much, but I liked the early Mass in the tiny chapel. The candles on the altar, the faint light streaking the windows, and the scent of incense, fresh and stale, which always clung even to the wooden pews, made me happy. Though I don't think I was religious it was probably an awakening of that strong sense of beauty for which I have always been grateful. When I was nine, Father took Oscar and me to England, placing us in Chatham College, Rochester. Oscar was delighted, for he honestly loved books and studied hard. I was really very proud of him on Prize Days, and I believe that in all the five years we spent there together he never failed to win a prize whenever any were Offered. As for me, I never even tried for one. I hated to study. I used to sit at my desk, with my book propped up before me, and invent new ways of swinging my feet. When I had swung them as far forward and backward as possible, I would use a side-motion, which was very irritating to the boy next me.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Antique Greek Dance by : Maurice Emmanuel
Download or read book The Antique Greek Dance written by Maurice Emmanuel and published by . This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurice Emmanuel was a French composer and musicologist. He spent his childhood in Burgundy, where the beautiful landscape instilled in him a love of nature and the visual arts, which was encouraged by his mother, a skilled artist. Emmanuel studied at both the Paris Conservatoire and the Sorbonne where he studied classics, poetics, philology and history of art. In 1896, after a viva voce examination involving dancers from the Opera and ambitious projections by the chronophotographer Jules Marey, Emmanuel was awarded the doctorat es lettres for his thesis on ancient Greek dance. Emmanuel extended this thesis into The Antique Greek Dance, a comprehensive study which stressed the freedom and eurhythmic qualities of the dance: this, its first English translation was published in 1916. It was the first serious study of the subject and was a major influence on many dance works of the twentieth century, most notably Frederick Ashton's Daphnis and Chloe.

Download or read book Choreomania written by Kélina Gotman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When political protest is read as epidemic madness, religious ecstasy as nervous disease, and angular dance moves as dark and uncouth, the 'disorder' being described is choreomania. At once a catchall term to denote spontaneous gestures and the unruly movements of crowds, 'choreomania' emerged in the nineteenth century at a time of heightened class conflict, nationalist policy, and colonial rule. In this book, author Kélina Gotman examines these choreographies of unrest, rethinking the modern formation of the choreomania concept as it moved across scientific and social scientific disciplines. Reading archives describing dramatic misformations-of bodies and body politics-she shows how prejudices against expressivity unravel, in turn revealing widespread anxieties about demonstrative agitation. This history of the fitful body complements stories of nineteenth-century discipline and regimentation. As she notes, constraints on movement imply constraints on political power and agency. In each chapter, Gotman confronts the many ways choreomania works as an extension of discourses shaping colonialist orientalism, which alternately depict riotous bodies as dangerously infected others, and as curious bacchanalian remains. Through her research, Gotman also shows how beneath the radar of this colonial discourse, men and women gathered together to repossess on their terms the gestures of social revolt.
Download or read book Dancing Class written by Linda J. Tomko and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tomko blazes a new trail in dance scholarship by interconnecting U.S. History and dance studies. . . . the first to argue successfully that middle-class U.S. women promoted a new dance practice to manage industrial changes, crowded urban living, massive immigration, and interchange and repositioning among different classes." —Choice From salons to dance halls to settlement houses, new dance practices at the turn of the century became a vehicle for expressing cultural issues and negotiating matters of gender. By examining master narratives of modern dance history, this provocative and insightful book demonstrates the cultural agency of Progressive-era dance practices.
Book Synopsis The Art of Cuisine by : Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec
Download or read book The Art of Cuisine written by Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henri de-Toulouse-Lautrec brought to his art a zest for life as well as an impeccable style. It is an exciting discovery to find that Lautrec applies this same exuberance and meticulous technique to the art of cuisine--that he invented recipes and cooked new dishes as an artistic creation worthy of his serious attention. This volume is a collection of the recipes that Lautrec invented, or were garnered in his company from acquaintances of all classes of society. It has been illustrated with the menus that Lautrec himself designed and decorated, as well as with a rich abundance of other appropriate Lautrec paintings and drawings. The frontispiece is a portrait by Edouard Vuillard of lautrec preparing one of his masterful dishes. The recipes are given here in their original form, retaining their color of thought and language. The only modifications are culinary notes that have been added to facilitate the work of modern cooks. Lautrec took great pride in his culinary ability, and if he felt it would not be appreciated, he would say that some people "are not worth of ring dove with olives, they will never have any and they will never know what it is." Lautrec planned meals carefully, made beautifully decorated menus, and was inspired by the dinners to draw more sketches of the dinners, and of the food. He also brought to cuisine, as to the rest of his life, a marvelous wit. Who could forget the invitation to eat kangaroo, in honor of an animal that he had seen boxing at a circus (it was replaced at the last moment by an enormous sheep with an artificial pouch): or the housewarming of the apartment of his friend Natanson, where in a crazy atmosphere, he managed to intoxicate the artistic elite of Paris and launch the fashion of cocktail food. We owe the record of this cuisine (and also of a great body of the art collection itself) to Maurice Joyant. Joyant and Lautrec had been childhood friends, and their intimacy was renewed and deepened during the Montmartre years, when Lautrec's fame was growing and Joyant was director of the same art gallery in Paris that Theo Van Gogh had run before him. Lautrec was, throughout their relationship, the artist and innovator; Joyant, the steadying influence, the protector, and, after the painter's death, the executor. This book is a tribute to their friendship and to their daily intercourse in art and in cuisine. Thus, art, friendship, and food have come together in The Art of Cuisine as a joyful legacy of Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec and Maurice Joyant.
