Download or read book Revival from Below written by Brannon D. Ingram and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Deoband movement—a revivalist movement within Sunni Islam that quickly spread from colonial India to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and even the United Kingdom and South Africa—has been poorly understood and sometimes feared. Despite being one of the most influential Muslim revivalist movements of the last two centuries, Deoband’s connections to the Taliban have dominated the attention it has received from scholars and policy-makers alike. Revival from Below offers an important corrective, reorienting our understanding of Deoband around its global reach, which has profoundly shaped the movement’s history. In particular, the author tracks the origins of Deoband’s controversial critique of Sufism, how this critique travelled through Deobandi networks to South Africa, as well as the movement’s efforts to keep traditionally educated Islamic scholars (`ulama) at the center of Muslim public life. The result is a nuanced account of this global religious network that argues we cannot fully understand Deoband without understanding the complex modalities through which it spread beyond South Asia.

Book Synopsis Living as a Muslim by : Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanawi
Download or read book Living as a Muslim written by Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanawi and published by Turath Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allah (swt) has declared in the Qur’ān: ﴾O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger…﴿ (4:59). Accordingly, Islamic religious life is based on the instructions of the Qur’ān and the authentic Sunna. This treatise brings together around 90 verses of the Qur’ān and 340 hadiths—under the headings of 25 ‘principles’—which focus on the very essentials of Islam, including the meaning of Islam and faith; exhortations of a spiritual nature, such as trusting in the Divine, remembrance of Him, loving Allah and His Messenger, abstaining from sin, gratitude, and patience; and commandments of a legal nature, relating to prayer, recitation of the Qur’ān, fasting, hajj, zakat, marriage, childrearing and good social conduct. Ashraf ʿAlī Thānawī (1863-1943) was a leading Islamic scholar and Sufi from India, whose popularity continues. After graduating from the famous seminary Dār al-ʿUlūm Deoband, he spent his life engaged in the scholarly life of the madrasah and as a spiritual guide. As a scholar and Sufi, he wrote books on a wide variety of subjects, both legal and spiritual, from beginners’ level to advanced, and inspired many scholars, including those Indian scholars who would contribute to the establishment of Pakistan.

Book Synopsis Muslims in Non-Muslim Lands by : Amjad M. Mohammed
Download or read book Muslims in Non-Muslim Lands written by Amjad M. Mohammed and published by Mitchell Beazley. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to mass migration over a number of decades, many Muslims today find themselves residing as minorities in Western secular nations and as a result are searching for answers in order to live within these societies yet remain true to their faith. This book sets out to counter the idea that there are only two possibilities for Muslim minorities--isolation or assimilation--by arguing that traditional Islamic law, or fiqh as it is found in the classical schools of law, is not outdated or too inflexible to be utilized in the 21st century and that rather it can provide the means for Muslims to integrate within secular societies while maintaining a link to the sources of their religion and its legal rulings. Amjad M. Mohammed demonstrates how Islamic law, as interpreted by the Hanafi School of Law, is a multifaceted, complex legal system that takes into account both the individual's situation and the society's culture and customs. The concept of diyar, or political-legal jurisdictions, is discussed with special emphasis on the criteria for the application of dar al-Islam (Muslim state), dar-al-sulh (peace-treaty state), and dar al-harb (enemy state). A number of rulings for different situations that confront Muslim minorities are also included, such as working with illegal products or services, halal meat, food additives, medicines and medical interventions, financial transactions, and political participation.
