Book excerpt: This volume deals with English Puritan book printing and publishing in the Netherlands, especially in the cities of Amsterdam and Leiden, in the early seventeenth century. Because of censorship in England, many Puritans had to go abroad to have their books printed. Once produced by Dutch presses, the books were shipped, or smuggled, back to England. The book centers on a body of about 350 Puritanical books, mostly in the English language, printed in the Dutch Republic by Puritan printers in exile or by sympathetic Dutch printers. The book examines the chain of authors, printers, publishers, financial backers, smugglers, and booksellers involved. Zealous Puritan believers participated at each stage. This book is important for studying the relationship between Dutch printing and Puritan activities in Britain.

Book Synopsis English Students at Leiden University, 1575-1650 by : Daniela Prögler

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oldest and most renowned Dutch university, Leiden was an attractive proposition for travelling foreign students in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Alongside offering an excellent academic program and outstanding facilities, Leiden was also able to cater to the desires of noble students providing various extra-curricular activities. Leiden was the most popular continental university among English students, and this book investigates the 831 English students who studied there between 1575 and 1650. The preference of English students for Leiden was, on the one hand, related to close Anglo-Dutch relations of the period, and these are investigated with respect to politics, economy, religion, culture, as well as to the large 'stranger' communities residing in the respective countries. On the other hand, Leiden's attraction resulted from its academic achievements, which are traced back to the conditions in the United Provinces, the limited influence of the Calvinist Church, Leiden's professors, as well as the university's facilities. The core of this study is an exhaustive quantitative study of the composition of the Leiden student population in general, and that of its English segment in particular. Information is provided on the duration of the studies of English students at Leiden, their age, social background and fields of study. We learn about the careers of English students both prior to and after their time at Leiden, and of the motivation that led the English to choose Leiden over other continental universities. More than a study of one group of students at one university, this book is a valuable contribution to the history of early modern universities and will appeal to a wide international readership interested in cultural and intellectual history as well as in Anglo-Dutch relations.

Book Synopsis British and Irish Emigrants and Exiles in Europe, 1603-1688 by : David Worthington
Download or read book British and Irish Emigrants and Exiles in Europe, 1603-1688 written by David Worthington and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises the first full-length comparison of Scottish, Irish, English and Welsh migration within Europe in the early modern period. Divided into four sections - 'Immigrants and Civilian Life', 'Diplomats and Travellers', 'Protestants and Patrons' and 'Catholics at Home and Abroad' - it offers a new perspective on several themes. Contributors elucidate networks of traders, soldiers, as well as scholars and religious figures. Material regarding patterns of residence (sometimes of the nature of an enclave, sometimes not), places of worship, choice of marital partners, and cases of return migration, is presented, the results demonstrating clearly the fruitfulness of pursuing a comparative approach to seventeenth-century British and Irish history. Contributors are Waldemar Kowalski, Peter Davidson, Douglas Catterall, Steve Murdoch, Ciaran O’Scea, Éamon Ó Ciosáin, Igor Pérez Tostado, Kathrin Zickermann, Barry Robertson, Siobhan Talbott, Polona Vidmar, David J.B. Trim, Tom McInally, Thomas O’Connor and Caroline Bowden.
