Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matrix algebra is one of the most important areas of mathematics for data analysis and for statistical theory. This much-needed work presents the relevant aspects of the theory of matrix algebra for applications in statistics. It moves on to consider the various types of matrices encountered in statistics, such as projection matrices and positive definite matrices, and describes the special properties of those matrices. Finally, it covers numerical linear algebra, beginning with a discussion of the basics of numerical computations, and following up with accurate and efficient algorithms for factoring matrices, solving linear systems of equations, and extracting eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years several new classes of matrices have been discovered and their structure exploited to design fast and accurate algorithms. In this new reference work, Raf Vandebril, Marc Van Barel, and Nicola Mastronardi present the first comprehensive overview of the mathematical and numerical properties of the family's newest member: semiseparable matrices. The text is divided into three parts. The first provides some historical background and introduces concepts and definitions concerning structured rank matrices. The second offers some traditional methods for solving systems of equations involving the basic subclasses of these matrices. The third section discusses structured rank matrices in a broader context, presents algorithms for solving higher-order structured rank matrices, and examines hybrid variants such as block quasiseparable matrices. An accessible case study clearly demonstrates the general topic of each new concept discussed. Many of the routines featured are implemented in Matlab and can be downloaded from the Web for further exploration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical linear algebra is far too broad a subject to treat in a single introductory volume. Stewart has chosen to treat algorithms for solving linear systems, linear least squares problems, and eigenvalue problems involving matrices whose elements can all be contained in the high-speed storage of a computer. By way of theory, the author has chosen to discuss the theory of norms and perturbation theory for linear systems and for the algebraic eigenvalue problem. These choices exclude, among other things, the solution of large sparse linear systems by direct and iterative methods, linear programming, and the useful Perron-Frobenious theory and its extensions. However, a person who has fully mastered the material in this book should be well prepared for independent study in other areas of numerical linear algebra.

Book excerpt: When reality is modeled by computation, matrices are often the connection between the continuous physical world and the finite algorithmic one. Usually, the more detailed the model, the bigger the matrix, the better the answer, however, efficiency demands that every possible advantage be exploited. The articles in this volume are based on recent research on sparse matrix computations. This volume looks at graph theory as it connects to linear algebra, parallel computing, data structures, geometry, and both numerical and discrete algorithms. The articles are grouped into three general categories: graph models of symmetric matrices and factorizations, graph models of algorithms on nonsymmetric matrices, and parallel sparse matrix algorithms. This book will be a resource for the researcher or advanced student of either graphs or sparse matrices; it will be useful to mathematicians, numerical analysts and theoretical computer scientists alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Subjects and Objectives. This book is about algebraic and symbolic computation and numerical computing (with matrices and polynomials). It greatly extends the study of these topics presented in the celebrated books of the seventies, [AHU] and [BM] (these topics have been under-represented in [CLR], which is a highly successful extension and updating of [AHU] otherwise). Compared to [AHU] and [BM] our volume adds extensive material on parallel com putations with general matrices and polynomials, on the bit-complexity of arithmetic computations (including some recent techniques of data compres sion and the study of numerical approximation properties of polynomial and matrix algorithms), and on computations with Toeplitz matrices and other dense structured matrices. The latter subject should attract people working in numerous areas of application (in particular, coding, signal processing, control, algebraic computing and partial differential equations). The au thors' teaching experience at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and at the University of Pisa suggests that the book may serve as a text for advanced graduate students in mathematics and computer science who have some knowledge of algorithm design and wish to enter the exciting area of algebraic and numerical computing. The potential readership may also include algorithm and software designers and researchers specializing in the design and analysis of algorithms, computational complexity, alge braic and symbolic computing, and numerical computation.

Book excerpt: This volume is the first in a self-contained five-volume series devoted to matrix algorithms. It focuses on the computation of matrix decompositions--that is, the factorization of matrices into products of similar ones. The first two chapters provide the required background from mathematics and computer science needed to work effectively in matrix computations. The remaining chapters are devoted to the LU and QR decompositions--their computation and applications. The singular value decomposition is also treated, although algorithms for its computation will appear in the second volume of the series. The present volume contains 65 algorithms formally presented in pseudocode. Other volumes in the series will treat eigensystems, iterative methods, sparse matrices, and structured problems. The series is aimed at the nonspecialist who needs more than black-box proficiency with matrix computations. To give the series focus, the emphasis is on algorithms, their derivation, and their analysis. The reader is assumed to have a knowledge of elementary analysis and linear algebra and a reasonable amount of programming experience, typically that of the beginning graduate engineer or the undergraduate in an honors program. Strictly speaking, the individual volumes are not textbooks, although they are intended to teach, the guiding principle being that if something is worth explaining, it is worth explaining fully. This has necessarily restricted the scope of the series, but the selection of topics should give the reader a sound basis for further study.
