Book excerpt: This document proposes a column-eliminating and a lower bound updating techniques for the simplex method for linear programming. A pricing criterion is developed for checking whether or not a dual hyperplane corresponding to a column intersects a simplex containing all of the optimal dual feasible solutions. If the dual hyperplane has no intersection with this simplex, we can eliminate the corresponding column from the constraints. As the simplex method iterates, the working constraint matrix eventually eliminates all columns except those that are in at least one optimal basis. Keywords: Algorithms; Ellipsoid; Karmarkar method.

The first question is concerned with the conditions on a square matrix M which guarantee that for every vector q, the solutions of LCP (q, M) are identical to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker points of the natural quadratic program associated with (q, M). In answering this question we introduce the class of ''row sufficient'' matrices. The transpose of such a matrix is what we call ''column sufficient.'' The latter matrices turn out to furnish the answer to our second question which asks for the conditions on M under which the solution set of (q, M) is convex for every q. In addition to these two main results, we discuss the connections of these two new matrix classes with other well-known matrix classes in linear complementarity theory. 23 refs.

This book offers a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of modern methods in matrix computation. It uses a unified approach to direct and iterative methods for linear systems, least squares and eigenvalue problems. A thorough analysis of the stability, accuracy, and complexity of the treated methods is given. Numerical Methods in Matrix Computations is suitable for use in courses on scientific computing and applied technical areas at advanced undergraduate and graduate level. A large bibliography is provided, which includes both historical and review papers as well as recent research papers. This makes the book useful also as a reference and guide to further study and research work.

Book excerpt: The paper reviews and compares some new methods which have recently been proposed for updating the inverse in the simplex method. All of these new methods assume an elimination form of inverse, which has lately been shown to be superior to the old product form. Some computational experiments comparing what appears to be the most promising of these new methods with the standard product form method are described and the results appear encouraging. Some suggestions for implementation of this method in a large-scale production LP code are also given. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a theoretical and computational presentation of a variety of linear programming algorithms and methods with an emphasis on the revised simplex method and its components. A theoretical background and mathematical formulation is included for each algorithm as well as comprehensive numerical examples and corresponding MATLAB® code. The MATLAB® implementations presented in this book are sophisticated and allow users to find solutions to large-scale benchmark linear programs. Each algorithm is followed by a computational study on benchmark problems that analyze the computational behavior of the presented algorithms. As a solid companion to existing algorithmic-specific literature, this book will be useful to researchers, scientists, mathematical programmers, and students with a basic knowledge of linear algebra and calculus. The clear presentation enables the reader to understand and utilize all components of simplex-type methods, such as presolve techniques, scaling techniques, pivoting rules, basis update methods, and sensitivity analysis.

Book excerpt: An Annotated Timeline of Operations Research: An Informal History recounts the evolution of Operations Research (OR) as a new science - the science of decision making. Arising from the urgent operational issues of World War II, the philosophy and methodology of OR has permeated the resolution of decision problems in business, industry, and government. The Timeline chronicles the history of OR in the form of self-contained, expository entries. Each entry presents a concise explanation of the events and people under discussion, and provides key sources where further relevant information can be obtained. In addition, books and papers that have influenced the development of OR or helped to educate the first generations of OR academics and practitioners are cited throughout the book. Starting in 1564 with seminal ideas that form the precursors of OR, the Timeline traces the key ideas and events of OR through 2004. The Timeline should interest anyone involved in OR - researchers, practitioners, academics, and, especially, students - who wish to learn how OR came into being. Further, the scope and expository style of the Timeline should make it of value to the general reader interested in the development of science and technology in the last half of the twentieth century.
