Die ersten beiden Punkte erfordern eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit den Sozial-und Erzie hungswissenschaften, die weiteren Punkte zusätzlich eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit der Fachwissenschaft. Die Fachdidaktik hat auch die Aufgabe, die Fachgrenzen' zu über schreiten und Mathematik "von Außen" zu betrachten. Die didaktische Diskussion in Schule und Hochschule ist in zunehmendem Maße vielfältiger und reicher, aber zugleich auch unübersichtlicher geworden. Das Gymnasium hat in den vergangenen 30 Jahren gravierende Veränderungen erfah ren. Das gilt insbesondere für die Zusammensetzung der Schülerschaft. Die heutigen Gymnasiallehrer sehen sich gänzlich anderen Lehr- und Lernsituationen gegenüberge stellt. Lehrer beklagen das Zunehmen der Spanne zwischen den schwachen und den guten Lernern im Hinblick auf das inhaltliche Wissen und die kognitiven Fähigkeiten, darüber hinaus die Auffälligkeiten hinsichtlich der Belastbarkeit, des Arbeitsverhaltens und der Emotionen. Wie in vielen Bereichen unserer Gesellschaft, so gibt es auch im Mathematikunterricht immer weniger den einen richtigen Weg, sondern viele, z.T. kon kurrierende Wege. Unterrichten ist dadurch schwerer, aber auch abwechslungsreicher und herausfordernder geworden.
