The research questions are as follows: Is there a significant correlation between the number of college course hours a per-service teacher has taken in literacy and that teacher's teaching anxiety? Is there a significant correlation between the number of college course hours a pre-service teacher has taken in mathematics and that teacher's teaching anxiety? Is there a significant correlation between the anxiety level the pre-service teacher feels in literacy and that teacher's teaching self-efficacy? Is there a significant correlation between the anxiety level the pre-service teacher feels in mathematics and that teacher's teaching self-efficacy? A correlational study design was utilized to determine the correlation between the number of course hours taken by a pre-service teacher in reading and mathematics and the level of anxiety and self-efficacy felt by the pre-service teacher. Students at four universities completed the Student Teaching Anxiety Scale, the Reading Teaching Efficacy Instrument, the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument, and one short demographic survey that asks participants demographic information and the number of course hours that were included in literacy and in mathematics. The sample size was 68 pre-service teachers from four universities. Data were analyzed and statistical tests were performed using SPSS. Spearman Correlation coefficients were calculated in order to analyze research questions 1-4. Results showed that while there was no significant relationship between the number of course hours pre-service teachers completed in either literacy or mathematics, there was a significant relationship between teaching anxiety and the teachers' feelings of self-efficacy in both literacy and mathematics.

The researcher also investigated potential intervening variables such as gender, grade level taught, level of college degree, and years of teaching experience, that may influence these relationships. Teachers (N = 119) from 11 elementary schools in a west central Florida school district participated in this study and completed the Mathematics Anxiety and Teaching Efficacy Survey. Survey data on mathematics anxiety and teaching efficacy were analyzed and correlated with mathematics achievement data, as measured by the 2009 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) mathematics subtest. Through a review of the research results and related literature, the researcher concluded that there was not a statistically significant relationship between teachers' perceived mathematics anxiety, anxiety about teaching mathematics, and student achievement. However, mathematics teaching efficacy was significantly correlated in a positive direction with student achievement. Review of the data also revealed that there was a statistically significant positive correlation between teachers' perceived mathematics anxiety and anxiety about teaching mathematics. Additionally, there was a significant negative correlation between anxiety about teaching mathematics and mathematics teaching efficacy.

One aspect of this vision, knowledgeable teachers, has been the subject of many studies as researchers attempt to determine what types of teacher knowledge are important in the development of effective teachers. In addition, factors that impact the development of teacher knowledge have also been investigated. The beliefs of teachers, including teaching efficacy, are one such factor. This dissertation presents findings from a study that examined the relationship between mathematics teacher efficacy and the growth in specialized mathematical content knowledge of preservice elementary teachers. The participants in this study were 101 elementary education majors enrolled in a two-course mathematics content and methods sequence at a mid-sized, mid-western university located in a small city. Two dimensions of mathematics teacher efficacy, personal mathematics teacher efficacy and mathematics teaching outcome expectancy, were measured using the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument (Enochs, Smith, and Huinker, 2000). Specialized mathematical content knowledge was measured using items developed by the Learning Mathematics for Teaching (LMT) project, and common mathematical content knowledge was measured using an instrument developed and used at another university. The findings of this study indicate that the level of specialized mathematics content knowledge of preservice teachers increased significantly during the mathematics methods/content course. Personal mathematics teacher efficacy, mathematics teaching outcome expectancy, and common mathematical content knowledge also increased significantly. Significant correlations were found among several of the variables assessed in the study, including personal mathematics teacher efficacy and specialized mathematical content knowledge. However, neither dimension of mathematics teacher efficacy significantly predicted growth in specialized mathematical content knowledge. A supplementary analysis revealed that the initial level specialized content knowledge did significantly predict growth in personal mathematics teacher efficacy of female students.

A systematic review of literature yielded 107 STEBI-A research items and 140 STEBI-B research items. The STEBI instruments have been used in a wide range of qualitative, cross sectional, longitudinal and experimental designs. Analysis of the findings of the papers reveals that in-service and pre-service programs that use innovative practices such as cooperative learning, inquiry based investigation and nature of science instruction can produce positive growth in participants’ science teaching efficacy beliefs. The personal science teaching efficacy beliefs of pre-service and in-service teachers showed greater mean scores and higher growth than their outcome expectancies. Implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: Teacher educators may need to pay attention to pre-service elementary teachers' motivation to learn mathematics in order to help them develop a deep level of understanding from their mathematics content courses for teachers (content courses) and to help them develop the disposition to learn mathematics throughout their careers. In this dissertation I examine mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics learning goals, two constructs of pre-service teachers' motivation. Since few studies have been conducted on pre-service teachers' mathematics self-efficacy and learning goals, Chapter 1 reviews the literature on the mathematics self-efficacy and learning goals of other populations. Using these studies, I develop and provide evidence for a model on how pre-service teachers' mathematics self-efficacy and learning goals could develop and influence learning. Then, in Chapter 2, I present results of a study I conducted examining one sample of pre-service elementary teachers' mathematics self-efficacy and learning goals. Survey results identify participants' (n = 61) self-efficacy beliefs and learning goals for learning mathematics. Results from interviews using narrative analysis indicate that participants (n = 22) believe past performance, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasions, career goals, and the nature of mathematics in their classes influenced the development of their mathematics self-efficacy and learning goals. Participants were grouped into two categories: productive and non-productive self-efficacy beliefs and learning goals. Results indicate one difference between the two groups is the self-reported effect of the content courses on participants' mathematics self-efficacy beliefs and learning goals. In particular, participants' talk about the effect on their self-efficacy and learning goals of their performance in the content courses, their awareness of their career goals in the content courses, and the fit between their beliefs about math and the math in the content courses. These results increase our knowledge of how mathematics self-efficacy beliefs and learning goals develop and have implications for how teacher educators design mathematics content courses. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the relationships among the variables of mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics teaching self-efficacy, and procedurally or conceptually-oriented teaching methods. The study included 75 practicing elementary teachers who teach mathematics as well as other subjects. These teachers completed the Mathematics Teaching and Mathematics Self-Efficacy survey, designed as part of the study and based on the Mathematics Self-Efficacy Scale - Revised (MSES-R) and the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument (MTEBI). Sixteen of the teachers also participated in an interview probing teaching methods for two mathematics topics the teachers believed they are most confident or least confident teaching. Interviews were assessed using the Conceptually and Procedurally Oriented Teaching Method Frequency Chart, designed as part of the study. Quantitative data analysis methods include descriptive statistics, Pearsons Product Moment correlation, and chi-square tests. Qualitative data analysis includes case study anecdotes for two of the interviewed teachers. Results indicate a strong relationship between mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics teaching self-efficacy and suggest that mathematics self-efficacy may be a precursor to mathematics teaching self-efficacy. Additionally, results indicate that when teaching their most confident mathematics topic teachers are more likely to use conceptually oriented teaching methods and when teaching their least confident mathematics topic teachers are more likely to use procedurally oriented teaching methods. This study offers findings to mathematics teacher educators and elementary mathematics teachers about the importance of developing mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics teaching self-efficacy because of their relationship to teachers choices of instructional methods. Additionally the two instruments developed in the study will help future researchers assess these variables.

Teaching mathematics content courses to this group of students presents unique challenges. While some PSTs enter their teacher preparation with weak mathematical skills and knowledge, many also hold negative attitudes, anxiety, and misguided beliefs about mathematics. This book is designed to support instructors who teach these students in mathematics content for elementary teachers courses. Elementary teachers need a richly developed understanding of the mathematics they are teaching in order to teach it effectively. Providing them with the needed preparation is difficult, but can be eased with a solid understanding of the mathematical concerns and limitations PSTs bring to the learning of mathematics and a familiarity with the standards and curricula topics PSTs will be expected to teach. Chapter One makes the argument that elementary mathematics is not trivial. This is followed by an analysis of four central issues related to the mathematical preparation of elementary teachers, specifically: (1) selecting/creating/modifying and implementing mathematical tasks (2) noticing/understanding children’s ways of thinking as a foundation for learning mathematics, (3) developing mathematical habits of mind in PSTs, and (4) understanding the role affect plays in the mathematical learning of PSTs.
