Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and Easy Introduction to the Mathematics The author is aware that there is a number of works. Of this nature already in use, in different parts of this country. It does not appear, however, that any one of them is now, or is likely very soon to be, in general use in schools throughout the united-states; and hence it may be infered that none of them have met the approbation of the public, generally. The author is not disposed to ex patiate on the defects of those systems, nor on the merits of his own; being persuaded that enlightened persons will examine and judge for themselves, and that his work, as well as others, must stand or fall, according to its real merit or demerit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. The classical theorem of Mittag-Leffler was generalized to the case of several complex variables by Cousin in 1895. In its one variable version this says that, if one prescribes the principal parts of a merom orphic function on a domain in the complex plane e, then there exists a meromorphic function defined on that domain having exactly those principal parts. Cousin and subsequent authors could only prove the analogous theorem in several variables for certain types of domains (e. g. product domains where each factor is a domain in the complex plane). In fact it turned out that this problem can not be solved on an arbitrary domain in em, m ~ 2. The best known example for this is a "notched" bicylinder in 2 2 e . This is obtained by removing the set { (z , z ) E e 11 z I ~ !, I z 1 ~ !}, from 1 2 1 2 2 the unit bicylinder, ~ :={(z , z ) E e llz1

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unified Mathematics This text presents a course in elementary mathematics adapted to the needs of students in the freshman year of an ordinary college or technical school course, and of students in the first year of a junior college. The material Of the text includes the essential and vital features of the work commonly covered in the past in separate courses in college algebra, trigonometry, and analytical geometry. The fundamental idea of the development is to emphasize the fact that mathematics cannot be artificially divided into compartments with separate labels, as we have been in the habit of doing, and to Show the essential unity and harmony and interplay between the two great fields into which mathematics may properly be divided; via, analysis and geometry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Account of the History of Mathematics The subject-matter of this book is a historical summary of the development of mathematics, illustrated by the lives and discoveries of those to whom the progress of the science is mainly due. It may serve as an introduction to more elaborate works on the subject, but primarily it is intended to give a short and popular account of those leading facts in the history of mathematics which many who are unwilling, or have not the tinie, to study it systematically may yet desire to know. The first edition was substantially a transcript of some lectures which I delivered in the year 1888 with the object of giving a sketch of the history, previous to the nineteenth century, that should be intelligible to any one acquainted with the elements of mathematics. In the second edition, issued in 1893, I rearranged parts of it, and introduced a good deal of additional matter. The third edition, issued in 1901, was revised, but not materially altered; and the present edition is practically a reprint of this, save for a few small corrections and additions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Pure Mathematics I have endeavoured to make Chapter IV one of the principal features of the book. The notion of a limit is one that has always presented grave difficulties to mathematical students even of great ability. It has been my good fortune during the last eight or nine years to have a share in the teaching of a good many of the ablest candidates for the Mathematical Tripos; and it is very rarely indeed that I have encountered a pupil who could face the simplest problem involving the ideas of infinity, limit, or continuity, with a vestige of the confidence with which he would deal with questions of a different character and of far greater intrinsic difficulty. I have indeed in an examination asked a dozen candidates, including several future Senior Wranglers, to sum the series 1 +m+m2+ and not received a single answer that was not practically worthless - and this from men quite capable of solving difficult problems connected with the curvature and torsion of twisted curves. I cannot believe that this is due solely to the nature of the subject. There are difficulties in these ideas, no doubt: but they are not so great as many other difficulties inherent in mathematics that every young mathematician completely overcomes. The fault is not that of the subject or of the student, but of the text-book and the teacher. It is not enough for the latter, if he wishes to drive sound ideas on these points well into the mind of his pupils.
