Book Synopsis Analytic Trends in Mathematical Physics by : Houssam Abdul-Rahman
Download or read book Analytic Trends in Mathematical Physics written by Houssam Abdul-Rahman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Arizona School of Analysis and Mathematical Physics, held from March 5–9, 2018, at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. A main goal of this school was to introduce graduate students and postdocs to exciting topics of current research that are both influenced by physical intuition and require the use of cutting-edge mathematics. The articles in this volume reflect recent progress and innovative techniques developed within mathematical physics. Two works investigate spectral gaps of quantum spin systems. Specifically, Abdul-Rahman, Lemm, Lucia, Nachtergaele, and Young consider decorated AKLT models, and Lemm demonstrates a finite-size criterion for D D-dimensional models. Bachmann, De Roeck, and Fraas summarize a recent proof of the adiabatic theorem, while Bachmann, Bols, De Roeck, and Fraas discuss linear response for interacting Hall insulators. Models on general graphs are the topic of the articles by Fischbacher, on higher spin XXZ, and by Latushkin and Sukhtaiev, on an index theorem for Schrödinger operators. Probabilistic applications are the focus of the articles by DeMuse and Yin, on exponential random graphs, by Saenz, on KPZ universality, and by Stolz, on disordered quantum spin chains. In all, the diversity represented here is a testament to the enthusiasm this rich field of mathematical physics generates.

Book Synopsis A Tear at the Edge of Creation by : Marcelo Gleiser
Download or read book A Tear at the Edge of Creation written by Marcelo Gleiser and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-04-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia, shamans and philosophers, believers and nonbelievers, artists and scientists have tried to make sense of our existence by suggesting that everything is connected, that a mysterious Oneness binds us to everything else. People go to temples, churches, mosques, and synagogues to pray to their divine incarnation of Oneness. Following a surprisingly similar notion, scientists have long asserted that under Nature’s apparent complexity there is a simpler underlying reality. In its modern incarnation, this Theory of Everything would unite the physical laws governing very large bodies (Einstein’s theory of relativity) and those governing tiny ones (quantum mechanics) into a single framework. But despite the brave efforts of many powerful minds, the Theory of Everything remains elusive. It turns out that the universe is not elegant. It is gloriously messy. Overturning more than twenty-five centuries of scientific thought, award-winning physicist Marcelo Gleiser argues that this quest for a Theory of Everything is fundamentally misguided, and he explains the volcanic implications this ideological shift has for humankind. All the evidence points to a scenario in which everything emerges from fundamental imperfections, primordial asymmetries in matter and time, cataclysmic accidents in Earth’s early life, and duplication errors in the genetic code. Imbalance spurs creation. Without asymmetries and imperfections, the universe would be filled with nothing but smooth radiation. A Tear at the Edge of Creation calls for nothing less than a new "humancentrism" to reflect our position in the universal order. All life, but intelligent life in particular, is a rare and precious accident. Our presence here has no meaning outside of itself, but it does have meaning. The unplanned complexity of humankind is all the more beautiful for its improbability. It’s time for science to let go of the old aesthetic that labels perfection beautiful and holds that "beauty is truth." It’s time to look at the evidence without centuries of monotheistic baggage. In this lucid, down-to-earth narrative, Gleiser walks us through the basic and cutting-edge science that fueled his own transformation from unifier to doubter—a fascinating scientific quest that led him to a new understanding of what it is to be human.

Book Synopsis Geometric Methods in Physics XXXVIII by : Piotr Kielanowski
Download or read book Geometric Methods in Physics XXXVIII written by Piotr Kielanowski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book consists of articles based on the XXXVIII Białowieża Workshop on Geometric Methods in Physics, 2019. The series of Białowieża workshops, attended by a community of experts at the crossroads of mathematics and physics, is a major annual event in the field. The works in this book, based on presentations given at the workshop, are previously unpublished, at the cutting edge of current research, typically grounded in geometry and analysis, with applications to classical and quantum physics. For the past eight years, the Białowieża Workshops have been complemented by a School on Geometry and Physics, comprising series of advanced lectures for graduate students and early-career researchers. The extended abstracts of the five lecture series that were given in the eighth school are included. The unique character of the Workshop-and-School series draws on the venue, a famous historical, cultural and environmental site in the Białowieża forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre in the east of Poland: lectures are given in the Nature and Forest Museum and local traditions are interwoven with the scientific activities. The chapter “Toeplitz Extensions in Noncommutative Topology and Mathematical Physics” is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Time Series Analysis with R by : Ray Huffaker
Download or read book Nonlinear Time Series Analysis with R written by Ray Huffaker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Time Series Analysis with R provides a practical guide to emerging empirical techniques allowing practitioners to diagnose whether highly fluctuating and random appearing data are most likely driven by random or deterministic dynamic forces. It joins the chorus of voices recommending 'getting to know your data' as an essential preliminary evidentiary step in modelling. Time series are often highly fluctuating with a random appearance. Observed volatility is commonly attributed to exogenous random shocks to stable real-world systems. However, breakthroughs in nonlinear dynamics raise another possibility: highly complex dynamics can emerge endogenously from astoundingly parsimonious deterministic nonlinear models. Nonlinear Time Series Analysis (NLTS) is a collection of empirical tools designed to aid practitioners detect whether stochastic or deterministic dynamics most likely drive observed complexity. Practitioners become 'data detectives' accumulating hard empirical evidence supporting their modelling approach. This book is targeted to professionals and graduate students in engineering and the biophysical and social sciences. Its major objectives are to help non-mathematicians -- with limited knowledge of nonlinear dynamics -- to become operational in NLTS; and in this way to pave the way for NLTS to be adopted in the conventional empirical toolbox and core coursework of the targeted disciplines. Consistent with modern trends in university instruction, the book makes readers active learners with hands-on computer experiments in R code directing them through NLTS methods and helping them understand the underlying logic (please see www.marco.bittelli.com). The computer code is explained in detail so that readers can adjust it for use in their own work. The book also provides readers with an explicit framework -- condensed from sound empirical practices recommended in the literature -- that details a step-by-step procedure for applying NLTS in real-world data diagnostics.
