This can be accomplished with a mechanical lung simulator working in conjunction with an accurate, computerized control system, based upon a sound mathematical model that represents the behavior of the human respiratory system. This research is concerned with the development and analysis of an accurate (R 2 lower, upper = 0.997, 0.995) mathematical model to represent the breathing cycle from a pressure-volume (PV) perspective. The goal of this study is to accurately define a mathematical model that describes the PV behavior of the lungs using limited PV data points. The PV curve's shape is indicative of specific respiratory ailments; therefore the curve can be used for patient assessment and diagnosis. By using a hyperbolic tangent equation to express the lung behavior during inspiration, and an exponential equation for expiration, the condition of a patient can be accurately represented. Additionally, this model quantifies the work of breathing and identifies key features (points) on the PV curve to guide clinicians in selection of appropriate intervention. The model employed derives from a class of mathematical programming methods that were originally developed for representing complex military and industrial activities and have recently been used to represent involved chemical equilibria. The motivation for this research is the long-range view that a successful mathematical simulation of the human system or of human subsystems would provide an important tool for biological investigations. A sufficiently complex mathematical model-that is, a model that embodies sufficiently complex mathematical model-that is, a model that embodies sufficient chemical and biological detail to represent a whole, functioning human system or subsystem-could be used to explore biological hypotheses, environmental stress reactions, and interplay of dependent subsystems, and could serve as a pedagogical tool or even as an aid to medical diagnosis. Of course, the foregoing long-range view is an ultimate goal. For the moment, only the techniques, concepts, and characteristics of such a mathematical model are being explored. This paper presents the results of a simulation of the external respiratory function. Respiration, and the consequent gas exchanges at the lung surfaces, involves many chemical reactions and a transformation of venous blood into arterial blood. This activity was chosen as a test cast to explore the feasibility of constructing a mathematical model of a human subsystem.

Nevertheless, it is necessary from time to time to remind experimentalists of the existence of modelers, and vice versa. The 4th Annual Biomedical Simulations Resource (BMSR) Short Course was held in Marina Del Rey on May 21-22,1989, to acquaint respiratory physiologists and clinical researchers with state-of-the art methodologies in mathematical modeling, experiment design and data analysis, as well as to provide an opportunity for experimentalists to challenge modelers with their more recent findings.

The sensitivity of the system to angular rotations was found to be small because magnetometers are normally mounted to the subject. Seven mathematical models for predicting volume were investigated, with the finding that two-parameter models are adequate for quiet breathing. For complicated maneuvers, a three-parameter model is necessary, and for predictive usefulness, the model must be calibrated using a complex maneuver. Results of studies of the dimensional changes, and the correlation between the dimensional changes, that occur during normal breathing are presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: Two models for the spread and control of a virus are detailed in this book: The Lung/Respiratory System Model (LSM) and the SVIR (Susceptible-Vaccinated-Infected-Recovered) Model.The LSM gives the spatiotemporal distribution of four viral-related proteins: virus population density along the lung air passage, host cell primary infection protein (viral genetic material (VGM)) concentration, host cell secondary infection protein (VGM) concentration, and air stream virion population density.The model is executed for a single inhalation, and a series of inhalation/exhalation cycles. For the latter, the progression of the viral infection into the lung is a principal result.The SVIR is first formulated as a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in time, then extended to a system of PDEs to account for spatial effects (spatiotemporal modeling).Principal outputs from the ODE/PDE models are the levels of vaccinations and infections. For the latter, the efficacy of the vaccine is a parameter that can be varied in a computer-based analysis of a vaccine therapy.The coding of the models is in R, a quality, open-source scientific computing system, and can be executed on modest computers. The R routines are available from a download link so that the example models can be executed without having to first study numerical methods and computer coding. The routines can then be applied to variations and extensions of the ODE/PDE models, such as changes in the parameters and the form of the model equations.
