Book Synopsis Preterm Birth by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Preterm Birth written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-23 with total page 791 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing prevalence of preterm birth in the United States is a complex public health problem that requires multifaceted solutions. Preterm birth is a cluster of problems with a set of overlapping factors of influence. Its causes may include individual-level behavioral and psychosocial factors, sociodemographic and neighborhood characteristics, environmental exposure, medical conditions, infertility treatments, and biological factors. Many of these factors co-occur, particularly in those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged or who are members of racial and ethnic minority groups. While advances in perinatal and neonatal care have improved survival for preterm infants, those infants who do survive have a greater risk than infants born at term for developmental disabilities, health problems, and poor growth. The birth of a preterm infant can also bring considerable emotional and economic costs to families and have implications for public-sector services, such as health insurance, educational, and other social support systems. Preterm Birth assesses the problem with respect to both its causes and outcomes. This book addresses the need for research involving clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science disciplines. By defining and addressing the health and economic consequences of premature birth, this book will be of particular interest to health care professionals, public health officials, policy makers, professional associations and clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science researchers.

The volume also examines the specific segments of the WIC population at risk for each criterion, identifies gaps in the scientific knowledge base, formulates recommendations regarding appropriate criteria, and where applicable, recommends values for determining who is at risk for each criterion. Recommendations for program action and research are made to strengthen the validity of nutrition risk criteria used in the WIC program.

Book Synopsis Reducing Birth Defects by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Reducing Birth Defects written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-10-27 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year more than 4 million children are born with birth defects. This book highlights the unprecedented opportunity to improve the lives of children and families in developing countries by preventing some birth defects and reducing the consequences of others. A number of developing countries with more comprehensive health care systems are making significant progress in the prevention and care of birth defects. In many other developing countries, however, policymakers have limited knowledge of the negative impact of birth defects and are largely unaware of the affordable and effective interventions available to reduce the impact of certain conditions. Reducing Birth Defects: Meeting the Challenge in the Developing World includes descriptions of successful programs and presents a plan of action to address critical gaps in the understanding, prevention, and treatment of birth defects in developing countries. This study also recommends capacity building, priority research, and institutional and global efforts to reduce the incidence and impact of birth defects in developing countries.
Book Synopsis Infant Formula by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Infant Formula written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-06-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infant formulas are unique because they are the only source of nutrition for many infants during the first 4 to 6 months of life. They are critical to infant health since they must safely support growth and development during a period when the consequences on inadequate nutrition are most severe. Existing guidelines and regulations for evaluating the safety of conventional food ingredients (e.g., vitamins and minerals) added to infant formulas have worked well in the past; however they are not sufficient to address the diversity of potential new ingredients proposed by manufacturers to develop formulas that mimic the perceived and potential benefits of human milk. This book, prepared at the request of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada, addresses the regulatory and research issues that are critical in assessing the safety of the addition of new ingredients to infants.
Book Synopsis Nutrient Regulation during Pregnancy, Lactation, and Infant Growth by : Lindsay Allen
Download or read book Nutrient Regulation during Pregnancy, Lactation, and Infant Growth written by Lindsay Allen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost every aspect of energy and nutrient metabolism is altered by hormonal and other physiological changes during pregnancy and lactation. While it is evident that hormonal adjustments affect nutrient requirements, these are rarely considered when nutrient recommen dations are made for pregnant or lactating women, and often neglected during evaluation of nutritional status. In addition, changes in nutrient metabolism during the stages of pregnancy and oflactation are usually considered separately, while in reality events during pregnancy can have a major influence on nutritional status and nutrient requirements during lactation. The purpose of this volume is to describe changes in the metabolism of important nutrients during pregnancy and lactation, including the physiological basis for these changes and their implications for nutrient requirements and assessment. Authors have considered such issues as inter-relationships between endocrine changes and nutrient metabolism at the tissue, cellular and molecular level; alterations in nutrient binding proteins; the efficiency of nutrient absorp tion and retention; and the impact on maternal as well as fetal nutritional status. Another unique aspect of this book is the focus on pregnancy and lactation as a continuum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Burg Wartenstein Symposia have become rightly celebrated for achieving their original purpose: to be of service and interest to the anthropological profes sion as a whole and to contribute to related sciences. We are specially grateful to the Board of Directors of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research for the award of a symposium on Physical Anthropology and Nutritional Status. We had considered that such a subject was timely and that an inter-disciplinary approach would contribute useful knowledge in a most important area--particularly in the field of child health. This pUblication of the proceedings will show the degree of success of these aims. Mrs. Lita Osmundsen, Director of Research at the Wenner-Gren Foundation, not only steered us in the early stages but, during our delightful time at Burg Wartenstein, and subsequently, she has been that most charming of crosses--den mother and first class science administrator. We are deeply grateful to her. And grateful, too, for the organization and friendly warm spoiling by the Wenner-Gren staff in residence at Burg Wartenstein. Our nutritional status was high. Nothing was too much trouble for them and it was a wrench to leave and say goodbye to them. The Foundation has since supported our efforts towards this publication. Here we owe a very special debt of gratitide to the cooperation and friendly exper tise of Mr. Seymour Weingarten, Senior Editor of the Plenum Publishing Corporation, aided by Mr. John Matzka, Managing Editor of this Corporation.
Book Synopsis Mothers, Babies and Disease in Later Life by : David James Purslove Barker
Download or read book Mothers, Babies and Disease in Later Life written by David James Purslove Barker and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1994 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text presents a full account of the studies by David Barker and his colleagues, which show that the nutrition of the foetus and newborn infant has significant effects on the health of the adult. The findings are made accessible to both medical practitioners and the general scientific reader. 1920s, which enabled the MRC Environmental Epidemiology Unit at the University of Southampton to trace and examine adults who were still alive and find out the cause of death of those who had died. The book discusses the scientific basis for the thesis, drawn from animal studies, and reinforces the now widely-accepted tenet that diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular, respiratory disease and diabetes are linked to poor health and nutrition of the mother and baby. including appendicitis and Paget's disease. Barker concludes with the argument that in order to prevent the chronic diseases so widespread throughout the Western world, we must look to the improvement in health and nutrition in expectant mothers.
