Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in coopera tion with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army, and the scientific community. The proceedings of this conference, entitled MATERIAL BEHAVIOR UNDER HIGH STRESS AND ULTRAHIGH LOADING RATES, will be published in two parts. The topics covered in the present volume include dynamic plasticity, adiabatic shear/localized deformation, and dynamic fracture mechanics. Papers dealing with ordnance applica tions, projectile launch environment, and recent work-in-progress will appear as an AMMRC Technical Report and will have more limited distribution in accordance with recent Army guidelines. The Conference Chairmen are particularly grateful to the members of the Program Committee. We wish also to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. Charles Polley of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, Mr. Robert Sell, Ms. Helen Brown DeMascio, and Ms. Mary Ann Holmquist of Syracuse University throughout the con ference planning stages and the publication of the text. The continued active interest in and support of these confer ences by Dr. E. Wright and Col. George Sibert, Direct and Deputy Director/Commander, respectively, of the Army Materials and Mechan ics Research Center, is appreciated.

Book excerpt: Adiabatic shear bands are found in a variety of metals and other materials; they cause rapid weakening due to energy concentration into narrow regions of the material. This is the very first book on this important topic and the only true introduction to the subject. An enhanced and updated student-friendly edition of the authors' 1992 book Adiabatic Shear Localization: Occurrence, Theories and Applications, this seminal text now includes essential Further Reading sections in some chapters. It explains adiabatic shear bands in a descriptive rather than a mathematical way, with a ‘quick reference’ section for readers wanting a more rapid introduction. Entirely comprehensive, the reader can dip into the chapters as suits his or her course material or research. If you are a postgraduate materials scientist, engineer, physicist, metallurgist, or indeed any researcher in materials that undergo rapid deformation and failure, this text is not to be missed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the non-traditional branches of physics and mechanics of shock waves that have arisen recently in connection with the intensive study of these waves in a wide variety of phenomena - from nuclear matter to clusters of galaxies. The book is devoted to the various physical phenomena and properties of intense shock waves. The author addresses methods of generation, diagnostics, as well as theoretical methods for describing shock waves at extremely high pressures and temperatures in laboratory and quasi-laboratory conditions. The state of materials with high energy density generated by shock wave compression is discussed. In addition, the book aims to systematize, generalize, and describe from a universal viewpoint the extensive theoretical and experimental material on the physics of high energy densities - the physics and mechanics of intense shock waves. The book is based on lectures delivered by the author at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, the Higher School of Physics of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, as well as overviews presented at many scientific conferences and symposia. It is useful to a wide range of researchers in natural sciences, giving them access to original works and allowing them to navigate the fascinating problems of the modern science of intense shock waves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to their low density and tailored properties, polymer matrix composites are attractive candidates for a large number of industrial applications ranging from aerospace to transportation and energy. However, the behaviour of polymer-based materials is strongly affected by a number of environmental factors. Environmental Degradation in Industrial Composites provides vital information on the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, liquid and gas exposure, electrical fields and radiations, and how micro- and micromechanical calculations during design and manufacture must take these effects into account. The book concludes with reviews on standard and specific testing methods for the various environmental factors and their combinations, helping mechanical/materials engineers and specifiers to predict possible changes due to environmental conditions. Each chapter is supplemented by industrial case studies to help in the understanding of degradation of composites in real life situations. This book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracyThis book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the Special Issue “Brittle Materials in Mechanical Extremes” is to spark a discussion of the analogies and the differences between different brittle materials, such as ceramics and concrete. The contributions to the Issue span from construction materials (asphalt and concrete) to structural ceramics to ice. Data reported in the Issue were obtained by advanced microstructural techniques (microscopy, 3D imaging, etc.) and linked to mechanical properties (and their changes as a function of aging, composition, etc.). The description of the mechanical behavior of brittle materials under operational loads, for instance, concrete and ceramics under very high temperatures, offers an unconventional viewpoint on the behavior of such materials. While it is by no means exhaustive, this Special Issue paves the road for the fundamental understanding and further development of materials.

Book excerpt: Original research on performance of materials under a wide variety of blasts, impacts, severe loading and fireCritical information for protecting buildings and civil infrastructure against human attack, deterioration and natural disastersTest and design data for new types of concrete, steel and FRP materials This technical book is devoted to the empirical and theoretical analysis of how structures and the materials constituting them perform under the extreme conditions of explosions, fire, and impact. Each of the 119 fully refereed presentations is published here for the first time and was selected because of its original contribution to the science and engineering of how materials, bridges, buildings, tunnels and their components, such as beams and pre-stressed parts, respond to potentially destructive forces. Emphasis is placed on translating empirical data to design recommendations for strengthening structures, including strategies for fire and earthquake protection as well as blast mitigation. Technical details are provided on the development and behavior of new resistant materials, including reinforcements, especially for concrete, steel and their composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adiabatic shear localization is a mode of failure that occurs in dynamic loading. It is characterized by thermal softening occurring over a very narrow region of a material and is usually a precursor to ductile fracture and catastrophic failure. This reference source is the revised and updated version of the first detailed study of the mechanics and modes of adiabatic shear localization in solids. Building on the success of the first edition, the book provides a systematic description of a number of aspects of adiabatic shear banding. The concepts and techniques described in this work can usefully be applied to solve a multitude of problems encountered by those investigating fracture and damage in materials, impact dynamics, metal working and other areas. Specific chapters focus on energetic materials, polymers, bulk metal glasses, and the mathematics of shear banding as well as the numerical modeling of them. With its detailed coverage of the subject, this book is of great interest to academics and researchers into materials performance as well as professionals. - Up-to-date coverage of the subject and research that has occurred over the past 20 years - Each chapter is written on a different sub-field of adiabatic shear by an acknowledged expert in the field - Detailed and clear discussions of each aspect
