Download or read book Materials for Future Fusion and Fission Technologies: written by Chun Chun Fu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To meet the demands of exponentially growing global energy consumption, extensive research is necessary for future fusion and Generation IV fission reactor power plants; however, structural material performance is a limiting factor. Conventional materials cannot withstand the complex thermomechanical loading, higher operating temperatures, and high irradiation doses. Consequently, research efforts are underway to develop and qualify novel structural materials. Likewise, research on fuel materials seeks to understand and mitigate issues such as oxidation and evolution of the fuel microstructure to high burn-up. To minimize trial-and-error experiments, major fission and fusion materials programs have expanded their use of multiscale materials modeling and simulation. The modeling efforts, in concert with specific experimental validation activities, complement the large experimental programs. This book highlights nuclear materials issues and challenges on experimental and modeling platforms. Topics include: fundamental defect behavior; experimental and theoretical investigations of radiation damage; behavior of oxide dispersion strengthened steels and other advanced structural materials; corrosion and surface coatings; and modeling and performance of nuclear fuels.

Book Synopsis Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laser has revolutionized many areas of science and society, providing bright and versatile light sources that transform the ways we investigate science and enables trillions of dollars of commerce. Now a second laser revolution is underway with pulsed petawatt-class lasers (1 petawatt: 1 million billion watts) that deliver nearly 100 times the total world's power concentrated into a pulse that lasts less than one-trillionth of a second. Such light sources create unique, extreme laboratory conditions that can accelerate and collide intense beams of elementary particles, drive nuclear reactions, heat matter to conditions found in stars, or even create matter out of the empty vacuum. These powerful lasers came largely from U.S. engineering, and the science and technology opportunities they enable were discussed in several previous National Academies' reports. Based on these advances, the principal research funding agencies in Europe and Asia began in the last decade to invest heavily in new facilities that will employ these high-intensity lasers for fundamental and applied science. No similar programs exist in the United States. Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers assesses the opportunities and recommends a path forward for possible U.S. investments in this area of science.

Book Synopsis Assessment of Inertial Confinement Fusion Targets by : National Research Council
Download or read book Assessment of Inertial Confinement Fusion Targets written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-07-17 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 2010, the Office of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Secretary for Science asked for a National Research Council (NRC) committee to investigate the prospects for generating power using inertial confinement fusion (ICF) concepts, acknowledging that a key test of viability for this concept-ignition -could be demonstrated at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in the relatively near term. The committee was asked to provide an unclassified report. However, DOE indicated that to fully assess this topic, the committee's deliberations would have to be informed by the results of some classified experiments and information, particularly in the area of ICF targets and nonproliferation. Thus, the Panel on the Assessment of Inertial Confinement Fusion Targets ("the panel") was assembled, composed of experts able to access the needed information. The panel was charged with advising the Committee on the Prospects for Inertial Confinement Fusion Energy Systems on these issues, both by internal discussion and by this unclassified report. A Panel on Fusion Target Physics ("the panel") will serve as a technical resource to the Committee on Inertial Confinement Energy Systems ("the Committee") and will prepare a report that describes the R&D challenges to providing suitable targets, on the basis of parameters established and provided to the Panel by the Committee. The Panel on Fusion Target Physics will prepare a report that will assess the current performance of fusion targets associated with various ICF concepts in order to understand: 1. The spectrum output; 2. The illumination geometry; 3. The high-gain geometry; and 4. The robustness of the target design. The panel addressed the potential impacts of the use and development of current concepts for Inertial Fusion Energy on the proliferation of nuclear weapons information and technology, as appropriate. The Panel examined technology options, but does not provide recommendations specific to any currently operating or proposed ICF facility.

Book Synopsis Nuclear Technologies in a Sustainable Energy System by : W. Häfele
Download or read book Nuclear Technologies in a Sustainable Energy System written by W. Häfele and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1981 the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) published the results of a global energy study looking fifty years into the future: Energy in a Finite World: A Global Systems Analysis (Cambridge, Massachusetts: Ballinger Publishing Co. , 1981)*. Not surprisingly, this book raises almost as many questions as it answers; thus, it defines a broad range of research topics that might be taken up by IIASA or other research institutions around the world. A 25-27 May 1981 workshop at IIASA entitled "A Perspective on Adaptive Nuclear Energy Evolutions: Towards a World of Neutron Abundance" was a beginning on one of these topics; it was organized by Wolf Hafele (Kernforschungsanlage Ji. ilich, Jiilich, Federal Republic of Germany, and IIASA) and Arkadius Archie Harms (McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada). The origin of this workshop was the effort with in the IIASA energy study to explore possible "sustainable" global energy systems that might eventually replace the current "consumptive" system. In investigating the possible contributions nuclear technologies might make to a sustainable energy system, it had become clear that it is not so much particular, distinct technologies within the nuclear family that should be examined as a question of particularly advantageous configurations of mutually complementary technologies. Only when one considers exploiting a whole spectrum of arrangements of fission breeders, fusion reactors, and accelerators does the true potential of nuclear power become apparent.

Book Synopsis Material Challenges in Current and Future Nuclear Technologies: Volume 1383 by : Karl R. Whittle
Download or read book Material Challenges in Current and Future Nuclear Technologies: Volume 1383 written by Karl R. Whittle and published by Materials Research Society. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symposium A, 'Material Challenges in Current and Future Nuclear Technologies' was held at the 2011 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, November 28-December 2, 2011. The symposium addressed current questions in nuclear materials development, such as the effects of radiation damage on core materials. At the same time, emphasis was placed on research to pre-empt future issues, such as materials with applications in both the proposed GenIV fission designs and fusion reactor cores. There was also linkage between both areas of research, as the requirements for both future fusion and fission reactor technologies are often very similar. The articles in this volume are separated into four broad areas, fuel, radiation effects, corrosion, and structural materials. Each of the areas combines both simulation and experimental work, highlighting the cross-linkage between them and how they can be used to holistically develop new materials for nuclear technologies.
Book Synopsis An Assessment of the Prospects for Inertial Fusion Energy by : National Research Council
Download or read book An Assessment of the Prospects for Inertial Fusion Energy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential for using fusion energy to produce commercial electric power was first explored in the 1950s. Harnessing fusion energy offers the prospect of a nearly carbon-free energy source with a virtually unlimited supply of fuel. Unlike nuclear fission plants, appropriately designed fusion power plants would not produce the large amounts of high-level nuclear waste that requires long-term disposal. Due to these prospects, many nations have initiated research and development (R&D) programs aimed at developing fusion as an energy source. Two R&D approaches are being explored: magnetic fusion energy (MFE) and inertial fusion energy (IFE). An Assessment of the Prospects for Inertial Fusion Energy describes and assesses the current status of IFE research in the United States; compares the various technical approaches to IFE; and identifies the scientific and engineering challenges associated with developing inertial confinement fusion (ICF) in particular as an energy source. It also provides guidance on an R&D roadmap at the conceptual level for a national program focusing on the design and construction of an inertial fusion energy demonstration plant.
