Book excerpt: Materials Characterization Using Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Methods discusses NDT methods and how they are highly desirable for both long-term monitoring and short-term assessment of materials, providing crucial early warning that the fatigue life of a material has elapsed, thus helping to prevent service failures. Materials Characterization Using Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Methods gives an overview of established and new NDT techniques for the characterization of materials, with a focus on materials used in the automotive, aerospace, power plants, and infrastructure construction industries. Each chapter focuses on a different NDT technique and indicates the potential of the method by selected examples of applications. Methods covered include scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray microtomography and diffraction, ultrasonic, electromagnetic, microwave, and hybrid techniques. The authors review both the determination of microstructure properties, including phase content and grain size, and the determination of mechanical properties, such as hardness, toughness, yield strength, texture, and residual stress. Book excerpt: Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) inspection schemes are important in design, manufacturing, and maintenance. By correctly applying techniques of NDE, we can reduce machine and system failures and increase reliability of operating systems over an extended lifetime. Nondestructive Evaluation: A Tool in Design, Manufacturing, and Service introduces and discusses primary techniques used in the field, including ultrasonics, acoustic emission, magnetics, radiography, penetrants, and eddy currents. Examples of each of these techniques are included, demonstrating typical applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the technology of inspection of metals, the main emphasis on final part inspection at the manufacturing facility or on receipt at the user's facility. The unique feature of this book is that it provides an intermediate level introduction to the different methods used to inspect metals and finished parts and a more detailed review of the specific inspection methods for important metal product forms. The book is divided into two parts: Part I gives the basics of the most important methods used for inspection and testing, while Part II covers the types of methods used to inspect different classes of metallic parts. The advantages and limitations of each method are discussed, including when other methods may be warranted. In particular, the chapters on specific product forms (e.g., castings) compare the different inspection methods and why they are used.

Although it might conceivably be read in the order in which the subjects appear it was designed to be consulted subject to subject as one uses a dictionary or encyclopedia. To facilitate quick identification and location of building materials, characteristics and problems they are first listed in the table of contents, repeated in the chapter headings and listed in the index. In addition to describing how building materials respond to environmental stresses in terms of their mechanical, electrical, chemical and thermal properties, brief references to their normal behavior and a comparison of various material characteristics has been included. Most of the information gathered and presented here represents the contemporary developments of ancient building lore. The increasing importance of renewal, rehabilitation, retrofit and restoration is placing added importance on material behavior. A separate and distinct field of building science is emerging as increasingly sophisticated instruments are linked to the growing ability and decreasing costs of computer analysis. This book describes one segment of a new building science-that of building diagnosis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multichannel recording system was designed and fabricated to simultaneously monitor, discriminate, and record four inspection frequencies. With this system, Lamb Wave models which are most sensitive to particular types of discontinuities can be selected. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the improved system can: (1) inspect a variety of materials such as cold rolled steels, stainless steels, ZR-CU-Mo alloys, and aluminum alloys in the thickness range of 0.060 in. to 0.110 in. and (2) detect small inclusions, slivers, and scale. Two field tests were performed. In the first test, a slow speed, high resolution study of 1100 feet of stainless steel sheets was conducted. The system was installed on the conveyor section of a variable speed sheet slitter. The sheets were about 43 in. by 120 in. and ranged in thickness from 0.030 in. to 0.060 in. Defects which represent a 3 percent thickness change were detected at an inspection speed of 30 ft./min. In the second test, 120,000 feet of coiled silicon steel were inspected on a coil slitter without curtailment of production at speeds of 100 ft./min. to 450 ft./min. The coils were 0.025 in. wide and ranged in thickness from 0.014 in. to 0.025 in. The system detected hot mill tears, laminations, and large inclusions. The laboratory and field tests demonstrated the capabilities of the Lamb Wave system for the detection of various types of discontinuities in thin sheets at high inspection rates without curtailment of production. Grade AR-95 Casing written by Hanson Materials Engineering (Western) Ltd and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[This] ... final report summarizes the results of a continuing engineering inspection and evaluation of the subject AR-95 casing. ... During the months of April and May, 1979, engineering evaluation and inspection services were performed as required during the purchase of approximately 5500 feet of 5" O.D. x 18 lb/ft. grade AR-95 casing complete with Hydril Super FJ-P connections. The scope of services provided by Hanson Materials Engineering (Western) Ltd. included materials evaluation, coordination of non-destructive testing and random visual inspection of the casing bodies and connections. Third party non-destructive testing by Southwest Pipe Testers Inc. (Ralson Pipe Service) of Channelview, Texas revealed defects exceeding API requirements in 14 of the 167 joints inspected. ... Recommendations: ... the high incidence of rejected casing observed during the non-destructive inspection of this Armco tubular product would suggest that intensive third party inspection is required when purchasing new material from this manufacturer, (5.4% of the defects observed were attributed to the manufacturer). ... A large number of tool marks noted on the inside bore, through the connection area, revealed a need for closer control of the internal surface finish of these types of casing products"--ASTIS database.
