Book excerpt: This book brings together twelve contributions that trace the empirical-conceptual evolution of Popular Communication, associating it mainly with the context of inequalities in Latin America and with the creative and collective appropriation of communication and knowledge technologies as a strategy of resistance and hope for marginalized social groups. In this way, even while emphasizing the Latin American and even ancestral identity of this current of thought, this book positions it as an epistemology of the South capable of inspiring relevant reflections in an increasingly unequal and mediatized world. The volume’s contributors include both early-career and more established professionals and natives of seven countries in Latin America. Their contributions reflect on the epistemological roots of Popular Communication, and how those roots give rise to a research method, a pedagogy, and a practice, from decolonial perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly popular in the United States and Europe, Andean panpipe and flute music draws its vitality from the traditions of rural highland villages and of rural migrants who have settled in Andean cities. In Moving Away from Silence, Thomas Turino describes panpipe and flute traditions in the context of this rural-urban migration and the turbulent politics that have influenced Peruvian society and local identities throughout this century. Turino's ethnography is the first large-scale study to concentrate on the pervasive effects of migration on Andean people and their music. Turino uses the musical traditions of Conima, Peru as a unifying thread, tracing them through the varying lives of Conimeos in different locales. He reveals how music both sustains and creates meaning for a people struggling amid the dramatic social upheavals of contemporary Peru. Moving Away from Silence contains detailed interpretations based on comparative field research of Conimeo musical performance, rehearsals, composition, and festivals in the highlands and Lima. The volume will be of great importance to students of Latin American music and culture as well as ethnomusicological and ethnographic theory and method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is celebratory in two senses: first, it brings together the experience of many committed media activists whose work is little known; second, at a time when much of the liberation potential of cultural studies is wrapped up in reception studies, it issues a challenge to complacent theorists to turn the computer off and go out and do some active political work in their field. --Intermedia "Pilar Riaño′s analysis of communication, development, and feminist literature via women as producers of communication is clear, and I think, accurate. I am impressed with the breadth of her knowledge of these fields and her clear thinking and careful organization of the material. . . . I would certainly include a book of this type on the reading list of my course." --Mary Ellen Brown, University of Missouri "A wide-ranging study that addresses key questions in the fields of political science, anthropology, women′s studies, development studies, and popular culture as well as communication. Riaño and her collaborators move us beyond explanations of women′s subordination rooted in notions of passivity and the domestic sphere to an understanding of how women′s communicative strategies can propel social change. By placing the particular experiences of women as communicators and organizers within the context of wider sociopolitical realities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and North America, Women in Grassroots Communication demonstrates the role of communication strategies and processes in social movements that offer the promise of liberation and democratization." --Elizabeth Mahan, Director, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, University of Connecticut How and to what extent are women in grassroots communication creating avenues for democratic communication and fostering social change? How is grassroots communication consolidating women′s views and perspectives on gender subordination and social transformation? Women in Grassroots Communication brings together a stellar cast of contributors from across the globe--Africa, Asia, Latin America, and North America--to answer these and other questions. First, they review the various frameworks for addressing the relationship between women, participation, and communication, looking at the ways women have been perceived. Next, the authors look at the social roles of women in their communities, their capabilities to communicate, and their informal networks at the local and community levels. The third section focuses on media production and the issues of media competency, identity, representation, evaluation, and group process. Finally, by looking at the connections between women′s participatory practices and wider sociopolitical initiatives, the final chapters examine the issues of organization, leadership, and communication strategies. Women in Grassroots Communication is an important reference or supplemental text for anyone working in or studying the field of development, intercultural communication, women′s and communication studies, and social change.

Book excerpt: Samba and carnival, radio soaps and telenovelas, oral poetry, popular drama, Amerindian art. This illustrated overview of Latin America's popular culture considers the broad spectrum of cultural forms in the various countries of the subcontinent. Exploring the ways in which daily life and ritual have resisted and been influenced by Western mass culture, Memory and Modernity traces the main anthropological, sociological and political debates about the nature of popular culture. Rowe and Schelling use their analysis of the development of a culture industry in Latin America to engage with wider debates about modernity, drawing out the contrast between Latin America's cultural wealth and its widespread material poverty. In challenging the assumptions of much Western cultural criticism, this book will be essential reading for students of Latin American society, while offering the general reader a concise and accessible overview of an exciting and varied popular culture.
