Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of cyclic population fluctuation in small rodents, and specifically lemmings, has been a major issue in ecology for decades. A number of questions, both truly scientific and also of popular mythology, surround the biology of these animals. Although a tremendous amount of research has been carried out on lemmings, much remains to be resolved. And while the story of the suicidal rodent is now understood as myth, the facts behind the population behavior of lemmings require further study. In this book well-known ecologists Stenseth and Ims have brought together a number of leading experts from both North America and Europe to review our current understanding of the taxonomy, population biology, feeding, and community ecology of lemmings. The authors put this current, but rather fragmentary, understanding of lemming biology into a general population biological context."In many ways we see lemmings as an important model species within population biology,"Stenseth acknowledges in the preface. Starting with the 16th Century, the book's introduction overviews the history of lemming research. The chapters are grouped into theme sections, each prefaced by an introductory review by the editors. The overall result is the most comprehensive and coherent overview of the subject to date. Finally, six appendices give detailed advice on how to study lemmings, which will provide an invaluable reference for research in the future. Contains never-before published material on the Norwegian lemming Lemmus lemmus Includes papers presented at a meeting on lemming biology at the biological station of Konnevesi at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland Edited and authored by experts in the field

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While translating this book, I was in close communication with the author, S. S. Shvarts (Schwarz), who read and commented on the entire translated manuscript. In particular, any ambiguities as to the identity of organisms described only by common names in the original text were removed, because the author kindly supplied the Latin names in all such cases. Com mon names are retained in the translation, but the Latin names are also added where needed. Some of the terminology used in the Russian is a transliteration from English words employed now more by European workers than Americans. I have defined these terms or noted their more common equivalents used in current American literature where it seemed useful in the text. A final chapter, "Recent Work on the Evolutionary Ecology of Ani mals," is presented as Appendix II to the translation of the original text. I have written this chapter in order to update the material presented in the original edition published in 1969. The chapter discusses important recent contributions relevant to the subject matter presented by Shvarts. I would like to thank W. Z. Lidicker, Jr., and Y. B. Linhart for reading this final chapter and providing very helpful suggestions and comments. I am particularly grateful to the author, S. S. Shvarts, for his careful reading of the translated manuscript.

Book excerpt: Paleontologists and geologists struggle with research questions often complicated by the loss or even absence of key paleobiological and paleoenvironmental information. Insight into this missing data can be gained through direct exploration of analogous living organisms and modern environments. Creative, experimental and interdisciplinary treatments of such ancient-Earth analogs form the basis of Lessons from the Living. This volume unites a diverse range of expert paleontologists, neontologists and geologists presenting case studies that cover a spectrum of topics, including functional morphology, taphonomy, environments and organism-substrate interactions.

Book excerpt: The Arctic is often portrayed as being isolated, but the reality is that the connectivity with the rest of the planet is huge, be it through weather patterns, global ocean circulation, and large-scale migration patterns to name but a few. There is a huge amount of public interest in the ‘changing Arctic’, especially in terms of the rapid changes taking place in ecosystems and exploitation of resources. There can be no doubt that the Arctic is at the forefront of the international environmental science agenda, both from a scientific aspect, and also from a policy/environmental management perspective. This book aims to stimulate a wide audience to think about the Arctic by highlighting the remarkable breadth of what it means to study its ecology. Arctic Ecology seeks to systematically introduce the diverse array of ecologies within the Arctic region. As the Arctic rapidly changes, understanding the fundamental ecology underpinning the Arctic is paramount to understanding the consequences of what such change will inevitably bring about. Arctic Ecology is designed to provide graduate students of environmental science, ecology and climate change with a source where Arctic ecology is addressed specifically, with issues due to climate change clearly discussed. It will also be of use to policy-makers, researchers and international agencies who are focusing on ecological issues and effects of global climate change in the Arctic. About the Editor David N. Thomas is Professor of Arctic Ecosystem Research in the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki. Previously he spent 24 years in the School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University, Wales. He studies marine systems, with a particular emphasis on sea ice and land-coast interactions in the Arctic and Southern Oceans as well as the Baltic Sea. He also edited a related book: Sea Ice, 3rd Edition (2017), which is also published by Wiley-Blackwell.
