Book Synopsis Perspectives in Civil Engineering by : Jeffrey S. Russell
Download or read book Perspectives in Civil Engineering written by Jeffrey S. Russell and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains 27 papers that serve as a testament to the state-of-the-art of civil engineering at the outset of the 21st century, as well as to commemorate the ASCE's Sesquicentennial. Written by the leading practitioners, educators, and researchers of civil engineering, each of these peer-reviewed papers explores a particular aspect of civil engineering knowledge and practice. Each paper explores the development of a particular civil engineering specialty, including milestones and future barriers, constraints, and opportunities. The papers celebrate the history, heritage, and accomplishments of the profession in all facets of practice, including construction facilities, special structures, engineering mechanics, surveying and mapping, irrigation and water quality, forensics, computing, materials, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, and transportation engineering. While each paper is unique, collectively they provide a snapshot of the profession while offering thoughtful predictions of likely developments in the years to come. Together the papers illuminate the mounting complexity facing civil engineering stemming from rapid growth in scientific knowledge, technological development, and human populations, especially in the last 50 years. An overarching theme is the need for systems-level approaches and consideration from undergraduate education through advanced engineering materials, processes, technologies, and design methods and tools. These papers speak to the need for civil engineers of all specialties to recognize and embrace the growing interconnectedness of the global infrastructure, economy, society, and the need to work for more sustainable, life-cycle-oriented solutions. While embracing the past and the present, the papers collected here clearly have an eye on the future needs of ASCE and the civil engineering profession.

Book Synopsis Sensitivity Analysis of Superpave Mixture Volumetric Properties by : Jianzhou Chen
Download or read book Sensitivity Analysis of Superpave Mixture Volumetric Properties written by Jianzhou Chen and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) currently monitors up to 19 parameters for the Superpave mixtures under its Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) Program. Data from 12 recently-built Superpave projects of KDOT were analyzed in this study to evaluate significant effects of different Superpave mixture volumetric and aggregate parameters (predictors) monitored in the QC/QA program on four output/response parameters, namely air voids at Ndesign (Va), voids in mineral aggregate (VMA), in-place pavement density and moisture sensitivity (in terms of tensile strength ratio, TSR). Principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple correlation analysis (MCA) were conducted to identify the statistically significant variables and to develop quantitative relationships between the predictor and the response variables.

Book Synopsis Mix Design Practices for Warm Mix Asphalt by : Ramon Francis Bonaquist
Download or read book Mix Design Practices for Warm Mix Asphalt written by Ramon Francis Bonaquist and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 691: Mix Design Practices for Warm-Mix Asphalt explores a mix design method tailored to the unique material properties of warm mix asphalt technologies. Warm mix asphalt (WMA) refers to asphalt concrete mixtures that are produced at temperatures approximately 50°F (28°C) or more cooler than typically used in the production of hot mix asphalt (HMA). The goal of WMA is to produce mixtures with similar strength, durability, and performance characteristics as HMA using substantially reduced production temperatures. There are important environmental and health benefits associated with reduced production temperatures including lower greenhouse gas emissions, lower fuel consumption, and reduced exposure of workers to asphalt fumes. Lower production temperatures can also potentially improve pavement performance by reducing binder aging, providing added time for mixture compaction, and allowing improved compaction during cold weather paving. Appendices to NCHRP Report 691 include the following. Appendices A, B, and D are included in the printed and PDF version of the report. Appendices C and E are available only online.
