VIRGIL BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH While in true poetic inspiration Virgil does not rank., with Lucretius or Catullus, yet in his larger conception of the poet's function, in his more artistic handling of his themes, and in his mastery of technique he is far superior to them. He is a product of the Augustan age, with its more settled political and social atmosphere, its wider culture, and its higher ideals of literary art. We miss, it is true, the individual note that marks the work of some of the earlier poets, but in its place is something of fuller volume, an essentially national tone, emanating from one who was possessed with the idea of his country's greatness. In his Georgics he sings the praise of Italian agriculture; his Aeneid is a glorification of the Roman race. He was born in Mantua in 70 B. C. His parents were plebeians, but sufficiently prosperous to give their son a good education. He received his first training at Cremona, went afterwards to Naples, and finally to Rome. How long he remained at the capital on this occasion is not certain, but we know from the Eclogues that he was in his native place during the troubles caused by the confiscation of lands in northern Italy for the benefit of the veterans of Octavian 1 after the battle of Philippi in 42 B. C. The soldiers, not satisfied with the lands which had been assigned to them around Cremona, proceeded to seize those near Mantua; and it was only through the protection afforded him by Asinius Pollio, the legate in the district, and afterwards 1 Afterwards the Emperor Augustus. by the intervention of Octavian himself, that the poet was secured 4n the possession of his farm. From this time on he enjoyed the patronage of Maecenas and Octavian, liv. ing for the most part either at...

Download or read book Zama written by Antonio Di Benedetto and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An NYRB Classics Original First published in 1956, Zama is now universally recognized as one of the masterpieces of modern Argentine and Spanish-language literature. Written in a style that is both precise and sumptuous, weirdly archaic and powerfully novel, Zama takes place in the last decade of the eighteenth century and describes the solitary, suspended existence of Don Diego de Zama, a highly placed servant of the Spanish crown who has been posted to Asunción, the capital of remote Paraguay. There, eaten up by pride, lust, petty grudges, and paranoid fantasies, he does as little as he possibly can while plotting his eventual transfer to Buenos Aires, where everything about his hopeless existence will, he is confident, be miraculously transformed and made good. Don Diego’s slow, nightmarish slide into the abyss is not just a tale of one man’s perdition but an exploration of existential, and very American, loneliness. Zama, with its stark dreamlike prose and spare imagery, is at once dense and unforeseen, terse and fateful, marked throughout by a haunting movement between sentences, paragraphs, and sections, so that every word seems to emerge from an ocean of things left unsaid. The philosophical depths of this great book spring directly from its dazzling prose.

This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Masterpieces of Latin Poetry, Thought Into English Verse I owe an explanation of the present volume's appearance so soon after that on Greek Dramatic and Bucolic Poetry. Both are instalments of a collection of specimens of Greek and Latin Poetry thought by me into English verse. In 1907 I published "The Poets: Chaucer to Tennyson;" later, revised and reprinted as "Five Centuries of English Verse." I have occupied and delighted the subsequent years with a sort of analogous service to the general lovers of poetry, not professed "scholars," in respect of Greek and Latin poetry. At least I did not hope to save labour, and have not spared it. Throughout the more than ten years devoted to the work I have continually been revising. Thus it is impossible even for myself to know how much energy has been devoted here or there. Measurement of thought is difficult. A verse may have cost me days to think from the original, while another corresponds at once, as if English born and bred. A result is that I have found bunches of charming Latin blossoms, willing, at whatever sacrifice of grace, to reflower in English air; and here they are!
