Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume features nearly 500 paintings, watercolors, pastels, and miniatures from Harvard University's storied, yet little-known, collection of American art. These works, many unpublished, are drawn from the Harvard Art Museums, the University Portrait Collection, the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, and other entities, and date from the early colonial years to the mid-19th century. Highlights include a rare group of 17th-century portraits, along with important paintings by Robert Feke, John Singleton Copley, Charles Willson Peale, Gilbert Stuart, and Washington Allston, in addition to works depicting western and Native American subjects by Alexandre de Batz, Henry Inman, and Alfred Jacob Miller, among others. Each work is accompanied by scholarly commentary that draws on extensive new research, as well as a complete exhibition and reference history. An introduction by Theodore E. Stebbins Jr. describes the history of the collection. Lavishly illustrated in color, this compendium is a testament to the nation's oldest collection of American art, and an essential resource for scholars and collectors alike.

Book excerpt: Industrial landscape paintings by John Moore executed over the last three decades focus on sites from Conneaut, Ohio, to Waterville, Maine, including Coatesville, Pennsylvania, a locale that has inspired such American Modernists as Charles Demuth and Ralston Crawford. Moore has revisited places in Coatesville and throughout the rustbelt that he painted twenty years ago, and his most recent paintings depict changes that have occurred there since. One of his subjects, Paradise, Pennsylvania, 13 miles west of Coatesville, is Amish farmland, a place that is the rural antithesis of industrial life in America. Moore is often described as one of the one of the leading realist painters of his generation, and many of his paintings resemble places where he grew up. While the images appear immediately recognizable, the paintings are, in fact, partial composites, based on specific sites but also incorporating formal concerns and oral history as told by individuals with ties to the regions. The Thirteen Miles from Paradise catalogue is drawn from the exhibition of the same name at the Arthur Ross Gallery of the University of Pennsylvania, where Moore has been Gutman Professor of Fine Arts and chair of the Department of Fine Arts since 1999. The catalogue includes contributions by Alexi Worth, a senior critic in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania; and by Debra Bricker Balken, an independent curator and writer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Crystal Palace to the skyscraper and on to the functional aesthetic of the German Bauhaus, the development of modern architecture required less than seven decades. Philadelphia's Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts warrants a central place in this narrative. Unlike the earlier buildings that made fragmentary and disconnected use of the latest industrial materials and systems, the Academy project combined the critical elements of modern logistical planning--steel and iron construction and modern plumbing, heating, and ventilation systems designed to serve a workplace and a school--with the architectural expression of the age. Moreover, rather than seeking to reify the past, architects Furness & Hewitt had chosen the most dynamic of modern forces, the machine, as both inspiration and ornament. Instead of being based on the rearview mirror, the new Academy, opened in 1876, looked to the present and the future. This created a civic museum and school building whose expressive style referenced both its updated purpose and a novel attitude toward history. The Academy's machine for making art can rightly be termed the first modern building.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and work of Thomas Eakins (1844–1916), America’s most celebrated portrait painter, have long generated heated controversy. In this fresh and deeply researched interpretation of the artist, Amy Werbel sets Eakins in the context of Philadelphia’s scientific, medical, and artistic communities of the 19th century, and considers his provocative behavior in the light of other well-publicized scandals of his era. This illuminating perspective provides a rich, alternative account of Eakins and casts entirely new light on his renowned paintings. Eakins’ modern critics have described his artistic motivations and beliefs as prurient and even pathological. Werbel challenges these interpretations and suggests instead that Eakins is best understood as an artist and teacher devoted to an exacting and profound study of the human body, to equality for women and men, and to middle-class meritocratic and Quaker philosophies.
