Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lively and anecdotal, Viva Baseball! chronicles the struggles of Latin American professional baseball players in the United States from the late 1800s to the present. Even as "Fernandomania" raged in 1981, most Latin players felt lonely, shunned, and forgotten. Samuel Regalado reveals the shocking racism faced by these immigrant athletes in a white culture. Only a burning desire to succeed and a grim determination to leave behind the grinding poverty of their homelands could have driven these men to continue in the face of overwhelming hostility. In addition to mining the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library in Cooperstown, New York, and the Sporting News archives, Regalado conducted interviews with some twenty-five Latin baseball stars, among them Felipe Alou, Orlando Cepeda, and Tony Oliva.

It combines detailed explanations with high quality clinical photographs tailor-made to help readers ace specialist oral examinations (MMed, MRCS, FRCS, FRCOphth, FAMS, FRANZCO).Co-authored by ophthalmology trainees who took the final MMed and FRCOphth (Oral) in 2016 and 2017, this is a book written by trainees, for trainees, with prominent author contribution by Prof Wong Tien Yin. This book provides invaluable guidance to readers in presenting their answers in a logical, succinct and elegant manner.Practical Guide to VIVA and OSCE in Ophthalmology Examinations aims to complement the book titled The Ophthalmology Examinations Review by Prof Tien Yin Wong to guide candidates onto the path of success in examinations. This book illustrates the answering techniques employed during examinations, utilizing clinical photographs accompanied by a full template answer script of various high yield conditions. The style and format has been intentionally designed to simulate examination conditions and to provide candidates with ample practice in preparation for the examination. Most major ophthalmic degrees require trainees to take and pass an oral ophthalmic exam. This book fills a significant void in the market for ophthalmic training, where texts combining clinical photos and actual exam answering techniques are severely lacking. Readers will be able to follow the answering techniques and examples provided within the book so as to better cope with the clinical exams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the rapid expansion of translation studies as an emergent (inter-)discipline over recent decades, demand for doctoral research opportunities is now growing fast in many countries. At the same time, doctoral training packages of a generic nature have been elaborated and refined at many universities, drawing on long traditions of doctoral research in established disciplines. A degree of consensus no doubt exists on such matters as the need for rigor, method and the generation of new knowledge. Beyond that, however, there are a host of issues specific to translation and interpreting studies that remain under-researched and under-discussed. Contributors to this special issue encourage reflection on a range of issues in ways that foster further debate and collaboration on the development of doctoral studies within the field. A number of concrete proposals are offered that could be adapted to local situations in different countries and academic settings. While some of the contributions adopt a mainly empirical stance, others adopt a broad perspective on training, citing examples of widely differing projects. Two contributors offer insights from personal experience of doctoral study while another describes the organization of doctoral work within the conceptual framework of a research group. All consider training from the angle of student needs and offer concrete suggestions for ensuring that doctoral candidates are equipped with the guidance, concepts, methods and tools required for success.
