Book excerpt: Four State of the Art (SOA) reports, ''Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide and the Global Carbon Cycle, '' ''Direct Effects of Increasing Carbon Dioxide on Vegetation, '' ''Detecting the Climatic Effects of Increasing Carbon Dioxide, '' and ''Projecting the Climatic Effects of Increasing Carbon Dioxide, '' and two companion reports, ''Characterization of Information Requirements for Studies of CO/sub 2/ Effects: Water Resources, Agriculture, Fisheries, Forests and Human Health'' and ''Glaciers, Ice Sheets, and Sea Level: Effect of a CO/sub 2/-Induced Climatic Change, '' were published by the US Department of Energy's Carbon Dioxide Research Division. Considerable information on atmospheric carbon dioxide and its possible effects on world climate is summarized in these six volumes. Each volume has its own index, but to make the information that is distributed throughout the six volumes more accessible and usable, comprehensive citation and subject indexes have been compiled. The subject indexes of the individual volumes have been edited to provide a uniformity from volume to volume and also to draw distinctions not needed in the separate volumes' indexes. Also, the comprehensive subject index has been formatted in a matrix arrangement to graphically show the distribution of subject treatment from volume to volume. Other aids include cross references between the scientific and common names of the animals and plants referred to, a glossary of special terms used, tables of data and conversion factors related to the data, and explanations of the acronyms and initialisms used in the texts of the six volumes. The executive summaries of the six volumes are collected and reproduced to allow the readers interested in the contents of one volume to rapidly gain information on the contents of the other volumes.

Book excerpt: A devastating, compelling account of the federal government's leading role in bringing about today's climate crisis. In 2015, a group of twenty-one young people sued the federal government in Juliana v. United States for violating their constitutional rights by promoting climate catastrophe and thereby depriving them of life, liberty, and property without due process and equal protection of law. They Knew offers evidence supporting the children's claims, presenting a devastating and compelling account of the federal government's role in bringing about today's climate crisis. James Gustave Speth, tapped by the plaintiffs as one of twenty-one preeminent experts in their climate case, analyzes how administrations from Carter to Trump—despite having information about the impending climate crisis and the connection to fossil fuels—continued aggressive support of a fossil fuel based energy system. What did the federal government know and when did it know it? Speth asks, echoing another famous cover-up. What did the federal government actively do and what did it fail to do? They Knew (an updated version of the Expert Report Speth prepared for the lawsuit) presents the most definitive indictment yet of the US government's role in the climate crisis. Since Juliana v. United States was filed, the federal government has repeatedly taken unprecedented steps to delay the case and force it to the appellate courts' shadow dockets. Yet as the case progresses slowly but certainly, it is inspiring a generation of youthful climate activists. An Our Children's Trust Book

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book presents strategies for mitigation of the greenhouse effect. It provides practical counter measures to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Key substitute technologies discussed include energy efficiency and conservation, biomass, and nuclear energy. These technologies are both mature and can be applied on a large scale. Important concepts can apply to other technologies as well. Technologies for a Greenhouse-Constrained Society will help scientists and engineers identify the technological and policy actions needed to counteract the greenhouse effect. Solutions are aimed at both developed and developing countries. Technologies for a Greenhouse-Constrained Society will appeal to environmental engineers and scientists, meteorologists, social scientists, geologists, educators, fuel engineers, energy engineers, economists, and others interested in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hawaiian Islands are small in area, but they resemble continents in miniature with climates ranging from tropical rainforest to desert to tundra. Prevailing Trade Winds: Weather and Climate in Hawaii, intended for students of geography, biology, ecology, and hydrology, for visitors interested in the natural phenomena of the places they visit, and for island residents, explains in clear language the many aspects of the climate and weather of Hawaii. Weather is usually defined as the current state of the atmosphere, while climate denotes average weather and includes the variability and frequency of the factors that produce weather. The authors of this volume discuss the factors that control climate; the radiation, energy, and water balances; the impact of climate on human activity; the climate-related meanings of many place names in Hawaii; and the importance of the climate of Hawaii for scientific research. Contributors: Paul Ekern, Tom Giambelluca, Dennis Nullet, Saul Price, Marie Sanderson, and Thomas Schroeder.
