Book excerpt: The authors present the first phenomenological study of the masses of orbitally excited baryons in large N{sub c} QCD. Restricting here to the nonstrange sector of the L=1 baryons, the 1/N{sub c} expansion is used to order and select a basis of effective operators that spans the nine observables (seven masses and two mixing angles). Fits are performed using subsets of the complete set of nine operators, including corrections up to O(1/N{sub c}) where leading order is N{sub c}1. This study shows that the 1/N{sub c} expansion provides an excellent framework for analyzing the mass spectrum, and uncovers a new hierarchy of operator contributions.

Book excerpt: The discussion of the 70-plet of negative parity baryons illustrates the large N{sub c} QCD approach to orbitally excited baryons. In the case of the l = 1 baryons the existing data allows to make numerous predictions to first order in the SU(3) symmetry breaking. New relations between splittings are found that follow from the spin-flavor symmetry breaking. The Lambda(1405) is well described as a three-quark state and a spin-orbit partner of the Lambda(1520). Singlet states with higher orbital angular momentum l are discussed.

Book excerpt: The masses of the negative parity 70-plet baryons are analyzed in large N{sub c} QCD to order 1/N{sub c} and to first order in SU(3) symmetry breaking. The existing experimental data are well reproduced and twenty new observables are predicted. The leading order SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry breaking is small and, as it occurs in the quark model, the subleading in 1/N{sub c} hyperfine interaction is the dominant source of the breaking. It is found that the Lambda(1405) and Lambda(1520) are well described as three-quark states and spin-orbit partners. New relations between splittings in different SU(3) multiplets are found.

Book excerpt: The excited baryon masses are analyzed in the framework of the 1/Nc expansion using the available physical masses and also the masses obtained in lattice QCD for different quark masses. The baryon states are organized into irreducible representations of SU(6) x O(3), where the [56,lP=0] ground state and excited baryons, and the [56,2+] and [70}},1-] excited states are analyzed. The analyses are carried out to order O(1/Nc) and first order in the quark masses. The issue of state identifications is discussed. Numerous parameter independent mass relations result at those orders, among them the well known Gell-Mann-Okubo and Equal Spacing relations, as well as additional relations involving baryons with different spins. It is observed that such relations are satisfied at the expected level of precision. The main conclusion of the analysis is that qualitatively the dominant physical effects are similar for the physical and the lattice QCD baryons.

Book excerpt: We present first results of calculations of masses of positive and negative parity excited baryons in lattice QCD using an O(a2) improved gluon action and a fat-link clover fermion action in which only the irrelevant operators are constructed with fat links. The results are in agreement with earlier calculations of N* resonances using improved actions and exhibit a clear mass splitting between the nucleon and its chiral partner. The results also indicate a splitting between the lowest J{sup P}=1/2− states for the two standard nucleon interpolating fields. The study of different Lambda interpolating fields suggests a similar splitting between the lowest two Lambda12−} octet states. However, the empirical mass suppression of the Lambda*(1405) is not evident in these quenched QCD simulations, suggesting an important role for the meson cloud of the Lambda*(1405) or a need for more exotic interpolating fields.

Book excerpt: A short review of current efforts to determine the highly excited state spectrum of QCD, and in particular baryons, using lattice QCD techniques is presented. The determination of the highly excited spectrum of QCD is a major theoretical and experimental challenge. The experimental investigation of the excited baryon spectrum has been a long-standing element of the hadronic-physics program, an important component of which is the search for so-called 'missing resonances', baryonic states predicted by the quark model based on three constituent quarks but which have not yet been observed experimentally. Should such states not be found, it may indicate that the baryon spectrum can be modeled with fewer effective degrees of freedom, such as in quark-diquark models. In the past decade, there has been an extensive program to collect data on electromagnetic production of one and two mesons at Jefferson Lab, MIT-Bates, LEGS, MAMI, ELSA, and GRAAL. To analyze these data, and thereby refine our knowledge of the baryon spectrum, a variety of physics analysis models have been developed at Bonn, George Washington University, Jefferson Laboratory and Mainz. To provide a theoretical determination and interpretation of the spectrum, ab initio computations within lattice QCD have been used. Historically, the calculation of the masses of the lowest-lying states, for both baryons and mesons, has been a benchmark calculation of this discretized, finite-volume computational approach, where the aim is well-understood control over the various systematic errors that enter into a calculation; for a recent review. However, there is now increasing effort aimed at calculating the excited states of the theory, with several groups presenting investigations of the low-lying excited baryon spectrum, using a variety of discretizations, numbers of quark flavors, interpolating operators, and fitting methodologies. Some aspects of these calculations remain unresolved and are the subject of intense effort, notably the ordering of the Roper resonance in the low-lying Nucleon spectrum.

I begin with a review of recent lattice results for the lowest-lying states of the excited baryon spectrum. The need to approach physical values of the light quark masses is emphasized, enabling the effects of the pion cloud to be revealed. I then outline the development of techniques that will enable the extraction of the masses of the higher resonances. I will describe how such calculations provide insight into the structure of the hadrons, and enable comparison both with experiment, and with QCD-inspired pictures of hadron structure, such as calculations in the limit of large N{sub c}.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the investigation of the strongly interacting hadrons ? to a quark model operating with effective color particles, constituent quarks, massive effective gluons and diquarks. The study of strong interactions based on effective constituent particles requires a solid ground of experimental data, which we now have at our disposal with the serious progress made in the investigation of hadrons, especially meson states. The present understanding of QCD applied to strong interactions can be distorted by prejudices. Therefore, the way followed by the quark model is to rely on the experiment and to restore the effective Hamiltonian on the basis of QCD on the one hand, and, on the other, of the spectral integral method.Baryon-baryon and antibaryon-baryon interactions are studied with the purpose of unambiguous applications of the written formulae to the interpretation of experimental data ? to the observation of new meson and baryon resonances. The technique used is the spin-orbital momentum expansion of the amplitude. This method is our basic approach to the proper treatment of experimental data. The photon-induced reactions are also considered and the problem of form factors is discussed.

This breaking occurs at zeroth order. For non-strange Baryons with a single quark excited, it is shown that to first order of perturbation theory the breaking is given by one 1-body operator (spin-orbit), and three 2-body operators, all involving the orbital angular momentum of the excited quark. Higher-body operators can be reduced to that set of operators. As illustration, p-wave Baryons are briefly discussed.

Book excerpt: We report lattice calculations of the low-lying baryon mass spectrum, with an emphasis on the introduction of two new techniques. One is the constrained fitting method based on Bayesian statistics which allows reliable extraction of excited states. The other is the use of the overlap fermion action which preserves exact chiral symmetry of QCD on the lattice and allows us to reach deep down into the chiral regime (our pion mass is as low as 180 MeV) where interesting chiral dynamics are exposed. One example is the elusive Roper state N(1440)1/2+ which shows up naturally as the 1st-excited state of the nucleon from the standard interpolating field. Together with other baryons, our preliminary results indicate that the level-ordering of the low-lying baryon states on the lattice is largely consistent with experiment and with that expected from meson-exchange quark models.

Book excerpt: The light-front holographic QCD approach is used to describe baryon spectroscopy and the systematics of nucleon transition form factors. Baryon spectroscopy and the excitation dynamics of nucleon resonances encoded in the nucleon transition form factors can provide fundamental insight into the strong-coupling dynamics of QCD. The transition from the hard-scattering perturbative domain to the non-perturbative region is sensitive to the detailed dynamics of confined quarks and gluons. Computations of such phenomena from first principles in QCD are clearly very challenging. The most successful theoretical approach thus far has been to quantize QCD on discrete lattices in Euclidean space-time; however, dynamical observables in Minkowski space-time, such as the time-like hadronic form factors are not amenable to Euclidean numerical lattice computations.
