Book excerpt: A contactor has been designed and constructed for experimental studies of mass transfer with or without chemical reaction between two fluid phases. The contactor is flexible enough to investigate a wide range of variables affecting mass transfer coefficients. It is easy to operate; it could be operated either as a batch process or continuous process. The testing of the contactor verified the uniform mixing within a phase and the stability of the interface within the desired range of agitation. Water-n-butanol system was used to verify the contactor and to evaluate the mass transfer coefficient. A new concept was deduced to explain the turbulent mass transfer across liquid-liquid interface. It was found that when both phases were agitated at the same speed, there was no effect of the Reynolds number of one phase on the other phase mass transfer coefficient. These mass transfer coefficient values versus the agitated rates (or Reynolds number in each phase) were callsed asymtotic values or asymtotic line. If the agitation rate (rps) of a given phase is lower than the agitation in the other phase, its mass transfer coefficient is influenced by the mixing within the other phase below a critical Reynolds number, while the influence diminishes above it and its mass transfer coefficient approaches its asymtotic values. New simple correlations were developed for the water and organic liquid mass transfer coefficients. These correlations verified a diffusivity dependency of 0.5 for low diffusivity values and a diffusivity dependency of 0.67 for larger diffusivity values. This was in agreement with the King model for explaining mass transfer coefficients based upon interfacial turbulence. Since the asymtotic line conditions for both water and organic phases seems to represent the desired range of many industrial process conditions, the asymtotic mass transfer coefficient values with their corresponding agitation rate or Reynolds number were used to develop the correlations. The contactor, the new concepts about the transport phenomena in turbulent mass transfer across the liquid-liquid interface, and the new correlations will be useful in future studies toward design of industrial equipment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveyed in this book are the kinetics of non-linear mass transfer and its effects on hydrodynamic stability in systems with intensive interphase mass transfer, in electrochemical systems with high current density and in chemically reacting systems. In Part 1 the non-linear mass transfer as a result of an intensive interphase mass transfer in the gas (liquid)-solid surface, gas-liquid and liquid-liquid systems is considered in the duffusion boundary layer approximation as well as in flat channel taking the longitudinal diffusion into account. The influence of the direction of the intensive interphase mass transfer on heat transfer and multi-component mass transfer is illustrated. Part 2 discusses non-linear mass transfer in electrochemical systems with high current density using the examples of the anode dissolving of metals in the electrolyte flow and the electro-separation of metals out of concentrated solutions. The theory of the measured electrochemical treatment of metals and alloys, which is a method of wide practical use, has been elaborated on this basis. In Part 3 the non-linear mass transfer in chemically reacting systems is considered in the cases of: non-linearity of the equations of the chemical reaction's kinetics and intensive interphase mass transfer or thermo-capillary effect due to chemical reactions. On this basis, the mechanisms and the macro-kinetics of the chemical transformations in the gas-liquid systems are discussed. Part 4 is dedicated to the chemical reaction kinetics in stationary two phase systems at an arbitrary contact time between phases. In Part 5 the effects of concentration gradients are considered in the approximations of the linear theory of the hydrodynamic stability of almost parallel flows. In systems with intensive interphase mass transfer, the Marangoni effect could also be observed, beside the effect of non-linear mass transfer. A comparative analysis of both effects is made in this book.

Book excerpt: Mass Transfer and Absorbers deals with absorption and mass transfer processes and the factors to consider in designing absorbers. Calculations are supported by a uniform, generalized process driving force, complying with Maxwell's equation, and the coefficients are made as independent as possible in terms of the kind of diffusion and of the values of the concentrations. This volume is comprised of seven chapters and begins with an overview of the general principles of diffusional mass transfer, absorption and stripping, and equilibrium between gas and liquid phases. Steady-state mass transfer by diffusion is then discussed, along with mass transfer in a single phase (forced flow and unforced flow). Subsequent chapters explore design considerations for mass transfer equipment and related problems; adsorption accompanied by a chemical reaction; and problems relating to hydrodynamics. The final chapter is devoted to some practical issues, including economic flow velocity and mechanical features of packed, plate, and spray tower designs. This book is intended for practicing designers and engineers.

Book excerpt: Rapidly increasing interest in the problems of air pollution and source-receptor relationships has led to a significant expansion of knowledge in the field of atmospheric chemistry. In general the chemistry of atmospheric trace constituents is governed by the oxygen content of the atmosphere. Upon entering the atmosphere in a more or less reduced state, trace substances are oxidized via various pathways and the generated products are often precursors of acidic compounds. Beside oxidation processes occurring in the gas phase, gaseous compounds are often converted into solid aerosol particles. The various steps within gas-to-particle conversion are constantly interacting with condensation processes, which are caused by the tropospheric water content. Thus in addition to the gaseous state, a liquid and solid state exists within the troposphere. The solid phase consists of atmospheric conversion products or fly ash and mineral dust. The liquid phase consists of water, conversion products and soluble compounds. The chemistry occurring within this system is often referred to as hydrogeneous chemistry. The chemist interprets this term, however, more strictly as reactions which occur only at an interphase between phases. This, however, is not always what happens in the atmosphere. There are indeed heterogeneous processes such as reactions occurring on the surface of dry aerosol particles. But apart from these, we must focus as well on reactions in the homogeneous phase, which are single steps of consecutive reactions running through various phases.

Book excerpt: The separation operations between two fluid phases are predominantly based on the mass transfer between individual phases across a phase interphase. The investigation of the actual transport across the interphase was the topic of a research programme, result in this work -the most profund publication on the topic. Here, scientists working in different subject areas (physics, physical chemistry, technical chemistry, chemocal engineering and thermodynamics) present their results in this exciting field.
