Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masonry as Applied to Civil Engineering: Being a Practical Treatise on the Design and Construction of Engineering, Works in Stone and Heavy Concrete, Adapted for the Use of Students, and Those Engaged in the Practice, of the Profession The art of masonry is very ancient; in fact, until comparatively recently all structures of any importance were built of stone. Nowadays the advent of steel and ferro-concrete has, not as some would suppose, taken the place of stone for important structures, but has made possible works which, while partly constructed of masonry, could not within reasonable limits be constructed wholly thereof. As far as stonework and stone- cutting concern the builder and architect, the many treatises on building construction leave nothing to be desired. They treat the subject for the most part, however, from the artistic standpoint. The object of the present work is to consider the question from the point of view of utility, that is heavy works, of use rather than mere ornament. Every endeavour has been made to set forth, broadly, without too much recourse to higher mathematics, the theoretical considerations with regard to structures and members thereof which, while being constructed with the greatest economy, shall resist, beyond doubt, failure or collapse under any normal condition which the designer thinks wise to provide for. These considerations are as far as possible illustrated by practical examples; in fact, this has been the aim of the author right through. It is hoped, therefore, that the work will be useful alike to students and those engaged in practice. Notification of any errors will be greatly appreciated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masonry is a construction material that has been used throughout the years as a structural or non-structural component in buildings. Masonry can be described as a composite material made up of different units and diverse types of arrangements, with or without mortar, that is used in many ancient public buildings, as well as with the latest technologies being applied in construction. Research in multiple relevant fields, as well as crossing structural with non-structural needs, is crucial for understanding the qualities of existent buildings and to develop new products and construction technologies. This book addresses and promotes the discussion related to the different topics addressing the use of masonry in the construction sciences and in practice, including theory and research, numerical approaches and technical applications in new works, and repair actions and interventions in the built environment, connecting theory and application across topics from academia to industry.

This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides guidance for the rational design and application of hydraulic grouts, based on a series of specific data (type of masonry, voids' width, targeted strength and durability level, available materials, etc.). To this end, the basic characteristics of a grout, i.e. its injectability (penetrability, fluidity and stability), its strength and durability, are taken into account by means of rational models and quantified expressions of all grout-design parameters. Thus, a holistic, rational mix design methodology for optimization of grout composition is given, permitting the preliminary design of grouts, without having to resort to multiple tests in advance. Moreover, detailed practical guidelines for grouting application and quality control, based on real case studies, are also included. The book attempts to rationalize the entire procedure of this poly-parametric decision-making, keeping however in mind the need for practical engineering solutions.

Book excerpt: Masonry is the building of structures from individual units, which are often laid in and bound together by mortar; the term masonry can also refer to the units themselves. The common materials of masonry construction are brick, building stone such as marble, granite, and limestone, cast stone, concrete block, glass block, and adobe. Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction. However, the materials used, the quality of the mortar and workmanship, and the pattern in which the units are assembled can substantially affect the durability of the overall masonry construction. A person who constructs masonry is called a mason or bricklayer. These are both classified as construction trades.Masonry [1] is commonly used for walls and buildings. Brick and concrete block are the most common types of masonry in use in industrialized nations and may be either weight-bearing or a veneer. Concrete blocks, especially those with hollow cores, offer various possibilities in masonry construction. They generally provide great compressive strength and are best suited to structures with light transverse loading when the cores remain unfilled. Filling some or all of the cores with concrete or concrete with steel reinforcement (typically rebar) offers much greater tensile and lateral strength to structures. Masonry workers are typically paid hourly depending on their position.-The use of material such as bricks and stones can increase the thermal mass of a building.-Masonry is a non-combustible product and can protect the building from fire.-Masonry walls are more resistant to projectiles, such as debris from hurricanes or tornadoes.Extreme weather, under certain circumstances, can cause degradation of masonry due to expansion and contractions forces associated with freeze-thaw cycles.Masonry tends to be heavy and must be built upon a strong foundation, such as reinforced concrete, to avoid settling and cracking.Other than concrete, masonry construction does not lend itself well to mechanization, and requires more skilled labor than stick-framing.-Masonry consists of loose components and has a low tolerance to oscillation as compared to other materials such as reinforced concrete, plastics, wood, or metals.-Masonry has high compressive strength under vertical loads but has low tensile strength (against twisting or stretching) unless reinforced. The tensile strength of masonry walls can be increased by thickening the wall, or by building masonry piers (vertical columns or ribs) at intervals. Where practical, steel reinforcements such as windposts can be added.-A masonry veneer wall consists of masonry units, usually clay-based bricks, installed on one or both sides of a structurally independent wall usually constructed of wood or masonry. In this context the brick masonry is primarily decorative, not structural. The brick veneer is generally connected to the structural wall by brick ties (metal strips that are attached to the structural wall, as well as the mortar joints of the brick veneer). There is typically an air gap between the brick veneer and the

Book excerpt: Masonry is found extensively in construction throughout the world. It is economical and strong. Masonry Design—part of the Architect’s Guidebook to Structures series—presents the fundamentals in an accessible fashion through beautiful illustrations, simple and complete examples, and from the perspective of practicing professionals with hundreds of projects under their belt and decades of teaching experience. Masonry Design provides the student with and reminds the practitioner of fundamental masonry design principles. Beginning with an intriguing case study of the Mesa Verde National Park visitor center, the subsequent chapters present the fundamentals of masonry design, bending, shear, compression design, wind and seismic design, and connection design. It is a refreshing change in textbooks for architectural materials courses and is an indispensable reference for practicing architects.
