Being a native of New England, and imbibing as I did at an early age, an utter aversion of the system - residing afterwards nearly twenty years in different slave-holding States - travelling frequently and extensively in every State in the Union, where slavery exists - addressing large and popular assemblies of both colours - aiding in the promotion of Sabbath Schools and Bible classes among the blacks-conversing freely with master and slave, respecting the relation they sustain to each other, and the feelings of mutual dependence and attachments between them - together with seven years' residence abroad, listening to the most exciting debates on the sub jcet in Exeter Hall, London, and elsewhere - and now a resident of New York, where every variety of opinion is freely discussed - and, though last not least, never having had any pecuniary interests whatever involved in the question, may perhaps entitle my remarks to as much consideration as {hose of many others, who have never travelled south of Mason and Dixon's me. Six months since she was on the stocks. She has been once to Liberia, freighted with aspirants to freedom and liberty. She has returned again to this port laden with the products of that country. She brought home not one, two or three, but twelve witnesses, ready to declare to you " the words of truth and soberness." They are not hirelings - they are not suborned, perjured witnesses and slaves - they come not at the call or command of the "Colonization society," or any other society, but are engaged in the prosecution of their own labors, pursuits and purposes - and when these objects are accomplished, they will again return to their home. There, we say, is the Liberia Packet; and if it is an object for any of you to see for yourselves, if there is, for you, a better country, a better government than this, go and see. In four months from the 1st of September, the day of her sailing, she will again return to this port, and then, if you choose, you can return to your brush or razor strop, your curry comb or your dray cart. If, after having once enjoyed the bland breezes of the tropics, after having seen the free ocean waves dashing on the free soil of Liberia - if after having seen the thriving towns of Monrovia and Harper, with their schools, churches and halls of justice - if after having seen the magnificent palm waving over the hamlet of the contented and free colonist, you can again return to the lanes and alleys of a crowded city, or quarter on some worthless pine barren of some lordly proprietor, and take permanent rank below a refuse European population, without any privilege, save to toil, or any liberty, but to live? Do so - and thereby confirm the assertions of your worst enemies. Dr. Alexander on Colonization - Continued The 3d Chapter of this work contains a brief history of the origin or first conception of re-colonising the expatriated Africans, in the land of their ancestors, and we trust no apology will be required of us for giving it entire. The whole matter relative to Dr. Hopkins and his promising protegés, is entirely new to us, and doubtless so to most of our readers. The names of Dr. Hopkins the veritable founder of Hopkinsianism, and Dr. Stiles of Yale College, the Historian and almost cotemporary of the Regicides, sound strangely indeed as "Fathers" of the colonization scheme; but, "It is a legacy worthy of such fathers." "If the scheme of colonizing the free people of colour, on the coast of Africa, should eventually prove successful, it will hereafter become a matter of curious and interesting inquiry, where, and with whom, the idea of such a colony first originated. As it relates to America, it has commonly been supposed, that the first distinct idea of transporting the descendants of Africans to the land of their forefathers was entertained by the Legislature of Virginia. But it is a fact well known, that the colony of Sierra Leone had been planted on the western coast of Africa, some time before the secret resolutions, on this subject, were adopted by the General Assembly and Senate of the state of Virginia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 3: January, 1846 Having these ends in view, we shall ask our readers to consider with us' the present condition of the colored race; the admirable adaptedness of the colonization scheme to meet that condition, remedy its evils, and large] bless the whole race, and, therefore, the peculiar claims upon us which it presents. We shall not promise, in this article, any thing very new, or, indeed, very striking, to minds which are familiar with reflections upon the aims and Operations Of the Colonization Society, and upon the wants and woes of that portion Of mankind whose benefit it seeks. Such is not our design, but merely to-present a review of old truths which may tend to stir (us all) up by putting (us) in remembrance. Let us, then, turn our thoughts for a while to the condition of the colored race. It will be remembered, that the whole of this race is African in its origin, and is generally believed to have descended from Ham, one of the three sons of Noah, to whom every nation now peopling the earth owes its descent. In the earlier ages Of the world, the children of Ham claimed equality if not superiority, to those of Shem and Japhet. Indeed learning and the arts were cradled in Egypt, in part of Ham's inheritance, and thence went abroad through the earth. And military glory shone brightly on Carthage, long the African rival Of Rome. And, far better, Christianity's milder light, beaming on Africa's shores, blessed and exalted her inhabitants, and some of them are still renowned in history as fathers in the Christian church. Ethiopia once was a favored land. It has not always been a re gion of darkness; nor have her children always been the poor and Oppress cd. But, alas for her, ages since, her light was extinguished, and now her people sit in the shadow of death, and her land is more afflicted than any other under heaven. For centuries her coasts have echoed with the clang or of chains and the wailings Of the oppressed. The winds on every sea have borne the groans of her exiled sons; the ocean has tossed and engulphed them, or scattered them through distant lands to wear out their wretched lives in slavery.
