The best way to know Christianity is to know Christ and the apostles. To feel the pulse of the church's life, we must touch human hearts, hear their moans and their songs, become familiar with their daily thoughts, and walk with them along the homely pathway of duty - things too commonplace to de mand a page in formal history, and yet things that make the very ousia of life. Gamewell was already an 'old China' hand by 1900. She had experienced the Chungking Riot of 1886 and knew well the dangers which could beset Europeans in her position. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under Marching Orders: A Story of Mary Porter Gamewell This morning there was a patriotic service in the town where I live, at which hundreds of children sang and waved their ags. AS they were Singing a ag song, I wished that they would cheer the old dragon ag of China, and more than all the ags of all the nations, would I have them cheer the Church ag, which bears the Sign of the cross. If, as a good citizen, you would follow your country's ag to the ends of the earth, if honor called you, would you not just as promptly follow the Christian ag anywhere it might lead? If you follow a ag, you put yourself under marching orders, and where the commander says go, the soldier directs his steps. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a panoramic view of the origins of the Boxer War. Comprehensively examining this historical conundrum of the 20th century from a detached perspective, the book is based on ten years of exhaustive research of both unpublished and published materials from all nine countries involved. Analysing the misunderstanding between the Chinese and foreign governments of the day, Lanxin Xiang debunks the traditional view that the anti-foreign Empress Dowager of the Chinese Empire was chiefly responsible for this catastrophic episode which altered the course of 20th century China's relationship with the west.
