Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was made in honor of Jaxon Liam Boomsma. In 2017, Jaxon was tragically killed in a farming accident when he was just seven years old. He loved nothing more than being on the farm. His bubbly personality and toothless smile will never be forgotten. To honor Jaxon, our family and the JLB Mission 23 Committee set up a memorial fund called the Jaxon Boomsma Memorial Fund. The JLB Mission 23 Committee was formed to help keep Jaxon’s smile alive, and consists of family and friends in the Yankton community. The Jaxon Boomsma Memorial Fund has helped enhance community parks and farm safety programs. We have also set up an annual scholarship for a Yankton High School senior who will study in an agricultural related field. Our main goal is to promote farm safety and keep kids safe. As a family we wanted to be able to keep Jaxon’s smile alive by helping make the places he loved safer and more beautiful for other kids. We also want to prevent more accidents from taking young lives too soon. To help donate or follow our journey, you can follow our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jaxonboomsma23/

Before We Eat has been adopted by the USDA’s Agriculture in the Classroom program. Before we eat, many people work very hard—planting grain, catching fish, tending farm animals, and filling crates of vegetables. With vibrant illustrations by Caldecott Medalist Mary Azarian, this book reminds us what must happen before food gets to our tables to nourish our bodies and spirits. Her father, in his grief, has cut himself off from the family, leaving the running of the home entirely in Mary's hands. As she nears her eighteenth birthday, Mary can't see anything in her future but drudgery. Then her childhood friend Daniel begins to court her, promising her a life of riches and ease. But her fairy-tale dreams turn to dust when her family becomes too much for Daniel, and he abandons her in her time of deepest need. Will Daniel come to grips with God's plan for him? And if he does return, can Mary trust that this time he will really follow through?

Book excerpt: In 1849, half brothers Michael and Joseph Quigley arrive in America seeking relief from the Irish potato famine. Their dying father tasked Michael to watch over Joe, but young Joe is headstrong and soon runs away. He spends his teen years in the wild cow town of West Bottoms, where his entrepreneurial savvy propels him into a successful business until a worldwide depression sends him scrambling. Joe meets and marries another Irish Catholic, Mary McManus, who comes from a family of higher ilk. The unlikely couple settles in a frontier riddled with lawless violence, which leaves them burned out by Jayhawkers. Natural catastrophes, failed crops, Joe’s military service, and illnesses overburden them, but it is a shocking, single event that leads to the destruction of Joe’s family. Through the eyes of nine-year old Little Mary Quigley—Joe and Mary’s second-born daughter—we observe the ultimate, horrific moment that leaves her and her five siblings orphaned. This particular act becomes their dark family secret and leaves a lamentable legacy that has waited generations to be revealed.
