B ▶ TRANSLATOR’S PREFACE. As will be seen from the author’s preface, the work was originally issued as the first instalment of a complete treatise of political economy. As he went on with his work, however, Marx modified his plans and eight years after the appearance of the “Zur Kritik” he published the first volume of his Capital, whose scope was intended to cover the entire field of political economy. ▷ 번역가의 서문. 저자의 서문에서 알 수 있듯이 이 작업은 원래 정치경제학 전체 논문의 첫 번째 부분으로 발행되었습니다. 그러나 작업을 계속하면서 마르크스는 그의 계획을 수정했고 "비판을 위하여"("Zur Kritik")가 나온 지 8년 후에 그는 정치경제학의 전체 분야를 포괄하는 범위를 가진 자본론 제1권(Capital, Volume I)을 출판했습니다. ▶ The plan to which Marx alludes in the preface to the present work was thus abandoned in its formal aspects, but not in substance. The subject matter treated here was reproduced or rather “summarized,” as Marx himself puts it, in Capital. But that was done in so far as was necessary to secure continuity of treatment. On the other hand, many important matters are treated here more thoroughly than in Capital, especially the part devoted to the discussion of money. This, as well as the chapters on the history of the theories of value and of money, which do not appear in Capital, make “Zur Kritik” a work practically complete in itself. ▷ 마르크스가 본 저작의 서문에서 언급한 계획은 따라서 형식적인 측면에서는 포기되었지만 실질적으로는 그렇지 않았습니다. 여기에서 다루어진 주제는 마르크스 자신이 말했듯이 자본론에서 재생산되었거나 오히려 "요약"되었습니다. 그러나 그것은 치료의 연속성을 확보하기 위해 필요한 한도 내에서 이루어졌습니다. 반면에 여기에서는 많은 중요한 문제들, 특히 돈에 대한 논의에 할애된 부분이 자본에서보다 더 철저하게 다루어집니다. 이것은 자본론에 나오지 않는 가치론과 화폐론의 역사에 관한 챕터와 마찬가지로 "비판을 위하여"("Zur Kritik")를 그 자체로 거의 완성된 작품으로 만듭니다. ▶ 작가의 서문(Author’s Preface)에 앞서 실린 번역자의 서문(Translator’s Preface)에서는 번역자가 직접 쓴 작품의 배경에 대한 소개와 독어 원문을 영어로 번역하는 의도를 구체적으로 확인하실 수 있습니다. 부록으로 추가된 정치경제학 비판 입문(Introduction to the Critique of Political Economy)이 잡지가 아니라, 단행본을 통해 최초로 소개되었다는 점에서도 마르크스의 이론에 대해 학문적 관심이 있는 독자에게 일독할만한 가치가 있습니다. ▶ There is another reason, if any need be given why this book should have been translated into English. Marx’s preface to the present work contains the classic formulation of his historico-philosophic theory known as the Materialistic Interpretation of History. This theory, which until recently was entertained almost exclusively by socialist writers and was hardly heard of outside of socialist circles in English speaking countries, is at last receiving not only due recognition but sympathetic appreciation at the hands of men of science. It is rather a significant coincidence that the work which for the first time clearly formulated the law governing social evolution should have seen the light of day in the same year in which Darwin gave to the world his theory of organic evolution. And as the latter had to fight its way to recognition in the teeth of religious prejudices, so has the recognition of the former been retarded by even more powerful social and political prejudices. ▷ 이 책이 영어로 번역되어야 하는 또 다른 이유가 있습니다. 현재 작업에 대한 마르크스의 서문에는 유물론적 역사 해석으로 알려진 그의 역사 철학 이론의 고전적인 공식이 포함되어 있습니다. 최근까지 거의 전적으로 사회주의 저술가들에 의해 즐거웠고 영어권 국가의 사회주의계 밖에서는 거의 들어본 적이 없는 이 이론이 마침내 과학계의 인정을 받았을 뿐만 아니라 호의적인 평가를 받고 있습니다. 사회 진화를 지배하는 법칙을 처음으로 명확하게 공식화한 작업이 다윈이 자신의 유기적 진화론을 세상에 발표한 해에 빛을 보았어야 했다는 것은 오히려 의미심장한 우연의 일치입니다. 그리고 후자가 종교적 편견에 맞서 인정받기 위해 싸워야 했던 것처럼 전자에 대한 인정은 훨씬 더 강력한 사회적, 정치적 편견에 의해 지체되었습니다. ▶ The Introduction to the Critique of Political Economy which is added as a supplement to this book is for the first time published in book form in any language. It was written by Marx in 1857, but for reasons explained by him in the preface was not published and in fact was never finished by him, since according to his changed plans it would have fitted more into the last volume of Capital which was to contain a history of political economy.
