So, when Principal Duckworth calls for a school race, Marvin plans to be the first at the finish line. But when the race begins and all the kids take off, something happens that changes Marvin forever. Unique to all the Magic Mommy Stories, Marvin and the Big Race begins with a tribute to motherhood and ends with a twist. The final thought encourages children to see how good it feels to help other kids, especially those who live with challenges. "The story of Marvin and the Big Race is enjoyable and simple, but with an adult-sized reminder of what matters - initiative to serve, coupled with a big dose of humility. I expect to see copies of Marvin's stories throughout our children's hospital!" Mark Funderburk, CEO, University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. "Marvin and the Big Race will impact children and parents. I love the story and absolutely support the message. This is a theme we can't tell our developing children too often." Douglas R. Kleppler, MD, Pediatrician.

Book excerpt: The first full-length, authoritative, and detailed story of the iconic actor's life to go beyond the Hollywood scandal-sheet reporting of earlier books, this account offers an appreciation for the man and his acting career and the classic films he starred in, painting a portrait of an individual who took great risks in his acting and career. Although Lee Marvin is best known for his icy tough guy roles—such as his chilling titular villain in The ManWho Shot Liberty Valance or the paternal yet brutally realistic platoon leader in The Big Red One—very little is known of his personal life; his family background; his experiences in WWII; his relationship with his father, family, friends, wives; and his ongoing battles with alcoholism, rage, and depression, occasioned by his postwar PTSD. Now, after years of researching and compiling interviews with family members, friends, and colleagues; rare photographs; and illustrative material, Hollywood writer Dwayne Epstein provides a full understanding and appreciation of this acting titan's place in the Hollywood pantheon in spite of his very real and human struggles.

Book excerpt: ¿This book will be the definitive scholarly reference on this topic and a must-read for anyone interested in miscarriages of justice. Essential.¿ ¿Choice ¿A good choice for academic collections and public libraries where social issues are of interest.¿ ¿Rebecca Vnuk, Booklist ¿Insightful and well-researched.... an important contribution. Free and Ruesink¿s approach provides much needed context for the large number of wrongful conviction cases involving African Americans.¿ ¿Shaun Gabbidon, Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg In this investigation of some 350 wrongful convictions of African American men, Marvin Free and Mitch Ruesink critically examine how issues of race undercut the larger goals of our criminal justice system. Free and Ruesink expand the focus of wrongful conviction studies to include not only homicide, but also sexual assault, drug dealing, and nonviolent crime. Their careful analysis reveals that black men accused of crimes against white victims account for a disproportionate number of wrongful convictions. They also uncover other disturbing failings on the part of prosecutors, police, witnesses, and informants. Highlighting the systemic role of race, the authors challenge us to move past the ¿just a few bad apples¿ explanation and to instead examine what it is about our criminal justice system that allows the innocent to be judged guilty. Marvin D. Free, Jr., is professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin¿Whitewater. He is coauthor of Crime, Justice, and Society and editor of Racial Issues in Criminal Justice: The Case of African Americans. Mitch Ruesink teaches psychology at Waukesha County Technical College.

Book excerpt: “A timeless classic” (San Antonio Express-News), reissued with a new foreword, afterword, and ten percent more material about a black man who spent seventeen years on a brutal Texas prison plantation and underwent a remarkable transformation. First published in 1984, Racehoss: Big Emma’s Boy is Albert Race Sample’s “unforgettable” (The Dallas Morning News) tale of resilience, revelation, and redemption. Born in 1930, the mixed-race son of a hard-drinking black prostitute and a white cotton broker, Sample was raised in the Jim Crow South by an abusive mother who refused to let her son—who could pass for white—call her Mama. He watched for the police while she worked, whether as a prostitute, bootlegger, or running the best dice game in town. He loved his mother deeply but could no longer take her abuse and ran away from home at the age of twelve. In his early twenties, Sample was arrested for burglary, robbery, and robbery by assault and was sentenced to nearly twenty years in the Texas prison system in the 1950s and 60s. His light complexion made him stand out in the all-black prison plantation known as the “burnin’ hell,” where he and over four hundred prisoners picked cotton and worked the land while white shotgun-carrying guards followed on horseback. Sample earned the moniker “Racehoss” for his ability to hoe cotton faster than anyone else in his squad. A profound spiritual awakening in solitary confinement was a decisive moment for him, and he became determined to turn his life around. When he was finally released in 1972, he did just that. Though Sample was incarcerated in the twentieth century, his memoir reads like it came from the nineteenth. With new stories that had been edited out of the first edition, a foreword by Texas attorney and writer David R. Dow, and an afterword by Sample’s widow, Carol, this new edition of Racehoss: Big Emma’s Boy offers a more complete picture of this extraordinary time in America’s recent past.

Book excerpt: This study of a unique social world probes beneath the thrill and spectacle of horse racing into the lives of the "honest boys," the "gyps," the "manipulators," the "stoops," and the "Chalk eaters"--the constituents of race track society and the players of the racing game. With scientific precision and journalistic vigor, Scott describes the everyday activities--the objectives and strategies--of those whose lives are organized around track proceedings and who compete with chance and one another. The players in the racing game range from track owners to stable boys, from law enforcers to lawbreakers, and from casual sportsmen to pathologically addicted gamblers. Considering the self-interests, the normative and operational codes, and the interactional relationships among the major types and subtypes of participants, the author defines the components of strategic movement within the framework of rules and resources to show how a player's relations to the "means of production" governs his behavior. The fruitful application of sociological theory and method to an unusually interesting social context makes this particularly useful still for courses in social problems and the sociology of organizations and of leisure.

Book excerpt: Ken Follett's extraordinary historical epic, the Century Trilogy, reaches its sweeping, passionate conclusion. In Fall of Giants and Winter of the World, Ken Follett followed the fortunes of five international families—American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh—as they made their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements, and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution—and rock and roll. East German teacher Rebecca Hoffmann discovers she’s been spied on by the Stasi for years and commits an impulsive act that will affect her family for the rest of their lives. . . . George Jakes, the child of a mixed-race couple, bypasses a corporate law career to join Robert F. Kennedy's Justice Department and finds himself in the middle of not only the seminal events of the civil rights battle but a much more personal battle of his own. . . . Cameron Dewar, the grandson of a senator, jumps at the chance to do some official and unofficial espionage for a cause he believes in, only to discover that the world is a much more dangerous place than he'd imagined. . . . Dimka Dvorkin, a young aide to Nikita Khrushchev, becomes an agent both for good and for ill as the United States and the Soviet Union race to the brink of nuclear war, while his twin sister, Tanya, carves out a role that will take her from Moscow to Cuba to Prague to Warsaw—and into history.

Book excerpt: This is book 2 of the incredible, real-life journey of a boy's struggle to achieve manhood. The journey continues in Colorado and takes him to the wilds of the Montana Rocky Mountains. The reader will meet the mountain-man mentor who taught him the ways of nature. Readers will visit an enchanted mountain village where the mayor ran the only gas station and the social hub of the village was a small café run by a jolly blind man, and will meet a young village high school girl as fresh as morning dew and a sheepherder who was a college professor. The call to war first took him from the total freedom of the wild to the regimented discipline of Navy boot camp on the shore of Lake Michigan and on to the warm, palm-tree climes of Corpus Christi, Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico. In New Orleans, he performed onstage at Pat O'Brien's and fell in love with a stripper. The reader will meet the crew and experience shipboard life on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. Following his less-than-illustrious naval tour (a charge of AWOL, two summary courts-martial), he reentered civilian life to marry, have children, and be admitted to college on a probationary basis. He was invited to President Kennedy's inaugural ball, and he received a college degree. Along with his three children and pregnant wife, they trekked to a job offer in Chicago in an old Ford and a U-Haul trailer.
