Moreover, also included is an article by Raman Parimala, discussing Kneser’s work concerning algebraic groups and the Hasse principle, which has been written especially for this volume, as well as an article by Rudolf Scharlau about Kneser’s work on quadratic forms, published elsewhere before. Another commentary article, written by Günter M. Ziegler especially for this volume, describes the astounding influence on the field of combinatorics of what was published as “Aufgabe 360” and its subsequent solution in 1955 resp. 1957 in the “Jahresbericht der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung”. However, as the titles of the articles show, Kneser’s mathematical interests were much broader, which is beautifully discussed in an obituary by Ulrich Stuhler, included as well in this volume.

Book excerpt: Hellmuth Kneser (1898-1973) is the second of three mathematicians from consecutive generations of the Kneser family, all of them with groundbreaking mathematical contributions on a wide range of topics. It was only in recent times that mathematicians recognized how Hellmuth Kneser's work influenced the course of topology and the theory of several complex variables in the 20th century. Indeed he was a mathematician of extraordinarily broad vision and insight and thus contributed to many mathematical fields of pure and applied mathematics including foundations, differential equations, operations research, and mathematics education. With the exception of two papers written in French, all of his articles were written in German. Not all of them are readily available through the usual sources. For this book, presenting the entire collection of Kneser's papers published in journals, experts in various areas have written English commentaries on aspects of Hellmuth Kneser's work, summarizing what he accomplished, describing the context of his work, and giving outlooks on its aftereffects.

U nfortu nately we have had to omit Hermann Weyl's article on "David Hilbert and his mathematical work," but the interested reader can always find it in the hard back edition of Hilbert and in Weyl's collected papers. At the request of a number of readers we have included a listing of all of Hilbert's famous Paris problems. It was, of course, inevitable that we would give the resulting joint volume the title Hilbert-Courant.

Hans Grauert is a pioneer in modern complex analysis, continuing the il lustrious German tradition in function theory of several complex variables of Weierstrass, Behnke, Thullen, Stein, Siegel, and many others. When Grauert came on the scene in the early 1950's, function theory was going through a revolutionary period with the geometric theory of complex spaces still in its embryonic stage. A rich theory evolved with the joint efforts of many great mathematicians including Oka, Kodaira, Cartan, and Serre. The Car tan Seminar in Paris and the Kodaira Seminar provided important venues an for its development. Grauert, together with Andreotti and Remmert, took active part in the latter. In his career he has nurtured a great number of his own doctoral students as well as other young mathematicians in his field from allover the world. For a couple of decades his work blazed the trail and set the research agenda in several complex variables worldwide. Among his many fundamentally important contributions, which are too numerous to completely enumerate here, are: 1. The complete clarification of various notions of complex spaces. 2. The solution of the general Levi problem and his work on pseudo convexity for general manifolds. 3. The theory of exceptional analytic sets. 4. The Oka principle for holomorphic bundles. 5. The proof of the Mordell conjecture for function fields. 6. The direct image theorem for coherent sheaves.
