Book excerpt: Annotation. Providing generous illustrations in both black and white" Annotation. Roberta Favis tells the story of the last two decades of the life and artistic career of Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904), when the peripatetic painter settled permanently in St. Augustine, Florida. Providing generous illustrations in both black and white and color, she reassesses his career and importance by focusing on this late period of his work and looking more closely at his local context and the contemporary issues particular to the state that became his home. The history of Heade's career in Florida is, like many Florida stories, a complicated interplay between the forces of tourism and development and the rich natural beauty of the state. Favis closely examines Heade's relation to the development of tourism in St. Augustine and uses his writings to show his sometimes conflicting attitudes toward development and conservation. He artistically celebrated the beauties of the state being touted as "the new Eden," but he was an active participant in the projects of Henry Flagler to transform St. Augustine into a mecca for northern tourists, while his writings expressed concern that the pristine environment and its inhabitants were already threatened. In words and in pictures, Heade spoke of the vitality, beauty, and the fragility of Florida. Combining his biography, art, and writing, Favis captures and early chapter in the history of art in Florida and brings to light an early and compelling advocate for the preservation of the state's natural riches. ... Book excerpt: In a time of climate change and mass extinction, how we garden matters more than ever: “An outstanding and deeply passionate book.” —Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals Plenty of books tell home gardeners and professional landscape designers how to garden sustainably, what plants to use, and what resources to explore. Yet few examine why our urban wildlife gardens matter so much—not just for ourselves, but for the larger human and animal communities. Our landscapes push aside wildlife and in turn diminish our genetically programmed love for wildness. How can we get ourselves back into balance through gardens, to speak life's language and learn from other species? Benjamin Vogt addresses why we need a new garden ethic, and why we urgently need wildness in our daily lives—lives sequestered in buildings surrounded by monocultures of lawn and concrete that significantly harm our physical and mental health. He examines the psychological issues around climate change and mass extinction as a way to understand how we are short-circuiting our response to global crises, especially by not growing native plants in our gardens. Simply put, environmentalism is not political; it's social justice for all species marginalized today and for those facing extinction tomorrow. By thinking deeply and honestly about our built landscapes, we can create a compassionate activism that connects us more profoundly to nature and to one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six years after his election as a segregationist, Florida governor LeRoy Collins denounced racial discrimination as contrary to “moral, simple justice.” In 1991, the Florida House of Representatives eulogized Collins as the “Floridian of the Twentieth Century,” and today Collins is remembered as one of Florida’s outstanding governors. As champion against rural misrule in 1954 and as the voice of racial moderation in 1956, Collins won the two most important gubernatorial elections in Florida history. In Floridian of His Century, a political portrait of this controversial Southern governor, Martin Dyckman argues that Collins’s courageous moral leadership spared Florida the humiliation that befell other states under less enlightened leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you a teacher, administrator, behavior analyst, or a professional supporting schools where misbehavior has a consistent negative impact on morale and student achievement? Is your schoolwide positive behavior support system failing to meet your needs? Are suspensions and issues related disproportionality growing? If so, you aren't alone. But this book can help. If you are like most teachers and school leaders, you've received little to no training in behavior or classroom management. This is shocking given that most educators leaving the field commonly cite issues with misbehavior as one of the primary reasons. You shouldn't be put in a position where you are trying to figure out how to deal with behavioral issues through trial and error. This is ineffective, and inefficient. You deserve better. To help remedy this, using the collective 80 plus years of experience in education, the authors wrote this book to guide you through a simple framework for embedding a system of responding to misbehavior in and out of the class that will improve both student behavior and achievement. Listen, conquering behavioral issues, especially when they are prevalent across the school, can be challenging. It requires a systematic and team effort involving both classroom, school leaders, and everybody else. When there is a breakdown in even one part of the system, it impacts the rest. The breakdown might be as simple as one classroom having a number of behavioral issues, or a well-intended administrator placing students in the wrong area following misbehavior that led to removal from the classroom. Sometimes this impact is small. Other times it can have a large ripple effect that builds momentum like a behavioral avalanche and has a devastating impact on the climate and culture of the school. As such, you can't really consider reducing misbehavior, at least not larger scale changes, without making the connection between what happens inside of the classroom to what happens outside of it. In the most successful schools, classroom and school leaders prevent and address behavioral issues through a unified and systematic approach. Therefore, it's important that each understand their own role and responsibility as well as the role and responsibility of the other that help to make up this system. If you are struggling with misbehavior, why wait? This book has the toolbox that you've been looking for!

Book excerpt: Product Description In this revolutionary work that brings the science of success into the fold of substantive philosophic discussion, Martin Vidal puts forward a systematic method for uncovering inefficiencies in the human psyche. The Ambition Handbook is a journey through the decision-making process, uncovering every self-defeating aspect of one's personality along the way. In contrast to conventional approaches that focus on mastering one element of success-confidence, habit formation, self-awareness, etc.-the handbook proposes that all of the elements that contribute to a person's efficacy are equally necessary and takes a comprehensive approach to recognizing and remedying the restricting elements of the psyche. Review "An exhilarating read that is certain to be considered a classic." --Andrew Gibbons, Entrepreneur "A ground-breaking approach to self-efficacy that has shifted the standards of the genre for the better." --Yashaswi Tapadia, Entrepreneur and Activist "The Ambition Handbook is an intellectual tour de force. Every page has insights that will stay with you for years. For anyone who has ever felt like they're standing in their own way, this book will change your life." Travis Ingram, Life Coach About the Author Martin Vidal is an accomplished stock and derivatives trader, award-winning author, and frequent contributor to globally distributed publications.
