Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martial Law What is it, this martial law? It is simply the mere will and pleasure of the military man by whom it is proclaimed and enforced. The other rightful martial law 1s well defined by the Legislature in the rules and articles of war. This is defined nowhere, nor sanctioned anywhere, or in any way; but, being the mere creature of him who proclaims it, is, of course, just what he chooses to make it. It 1s the mere unbridled Will of a military despot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martial Law: What Is It? And Who Can Declare It? The Martial Law, which forms the chief subject of the above queries, is not that code of regulations which controls and directs the actions, trials, and punishments of persons engaged in the military profession, or of the militia, when enrolled under the national banner, and which in England is comprised in the Articles of War, as made under authority delegated to the Royal Executive by Parliament in the Mutiny Act, passed in accordance with usage by the all-potent Parliament from year to year; and which, in the United States, consists of certain acts passed by the Federal Congress under the grants contained in Section 8 of Article I. of the Constitution, to wit: "To make rules for the government of the land and naval forces," and "to provide for the organizing, arming, and disciplining the militia, and for governing such part of them as may be employed in the service of the United States," but is that unsettled, dubious and despotic authority which Sir Thomas Smith, in 1642, referred to in his "Commonwealth of England," Book II., Chapter 8, thus: "In war-time and in the field, the Prince hath also an absolute power, so that his word is law. He may put to death, or to other bodily punishment, whom he shall think so to deserve, without process of law, or form of judgment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Habeas Corpus, and Martial Law The Article which is now given to the readers of the Review, was, the large part of it, written and in the hands of the printer of the Association, and a portion of it in type, when the printing of it was arrested. The preparation of the manuscript, then discontinued, has, since the purpose of publication in this form, been completed after notes which had been preserved. It only remains here to give the Third of the Articles of Association, which were designed to state the chief heads of agreement amongst the persons who associated themselves for the purpose of establishing and controlling the Danville Review: Every member shall publish, of his own composition, whatever he pleases; Without submitting it to the judgment of any one. All articles shall ordina rily be published in the order in which they are received by the printer: but articles of Members shall have preference of those written by persons not members; and no article of the latter sort shall be received by the printer, except through a member; and no member shall have credit on his 50 pages, for articles thus passing through his hands. No direct controversy between the Members, or between articles however furnished, shall be allowed in the pages of the Review. Although the title leads one to expect a basic procedural manual, this book goes well beyond its stated purpose to offer a great deal of historical and jurisprudential information. Davis [1847-1914] examines the authority and sources of military law and its relation to civilian law. He also pays close attention to its debt to English military law and custom, some of it dating back to the middle ages. Davis [1847-1914] was Judge-Advocate General of the U.S. Army and Professor of Law at West Point.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the dissident imaginary of samizdat activists, the political culture they created, and the pivotal role that culture had in sustaining the resilience of the oppositional movement in Poland between 1976 and 1990. This unlicensed print culture has been seen as one of the most emblematic social worlds of dissent. Since the Cold War, the audacity of harnessing obsolete print technology known as samizdat to break the modern monopoly of information of the party-state has fascinated many, yet this book looks beyond the Cold War frame to reappraise its historical novelty and significance. What made that culture resilient and rewarding, this book argues, was the correspondence between certain set of ideas and media practices: namely, the form of samizdat social media, which both embodied and projected the prefigurative philosophy of political action, asserting that small forms of collective agency can have a transformative effect on public life here and now, and are uniquely capable of achieving a democratic new beginning. This prefigurative vision of the transition from communism had a fundamental impact on the broader oppositional movement. Yet, while both the rise of Solidarity and the breakthrough of 1989 seemed to do justice to that vision, both pivotal moments found samizdat social media activists making history that was not to their liking. Back in the day, their estrangement was overshadowed by the main axis of contention between the society and the state. Foregrounding the internal controversies they protagonized, this book adds nuance to our understanding of the broader legacy of dissent and its relevance for the networked protests of today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kegan Paul imprint was created and its reputation for a distinguished list of titles established during a forty-year period from 1871 to 1911. Several publishers, and their firms, were involved in the development of the imprint during this period, beginning with Henry S. King and Company, and following in 1877 with Charles Kegan Paul and his partner Alfred Chenevix Trench. A financial crisis in 1889 forced an amalgamation with two other businesses and the new firm changed managers periodically until George Routledge and Son took over the business in 1911. Leslie Howsam combines biography and analytic bibliography in her study of the Kegan Paul imprint to demonstrate the value of publishing history as a contribution to the scholarly study of the book. Basing her research on intensive work in the company's surviving archives and supplemented by extensive library work with the actual books, Howsam looks at the wide range of significant titles published for the imprint. In addition, she reconstructs a biographical and business history of the firm based on published and unpublished accounts of the individuals involved, including the publishers and their families, and looks at the effects of changing business practices. The focus of Victorian Imprint – Kegan Paul is the duality of imprint: the publisher's imprint upon a list of books, and publisher's personalities, the imprint of their taste and judgment on the culture in which they lived.
