Book Synopsis Mondays on the Dark Night of the Moon by : Kirin Narayan
Download or read book Mondays on the Dark Night of the Moon written by Kirin Narayan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oral tales establish relationships between storytellers and their listeners. Yet most printed collections of folktales contain only stories, stripped of the human contexts in which they are told. If storytellers are mentioned at all, they are rarely consulted about what meanings they see in their tales. In this innovative book, Indian-American anthropologist Kirin Narayan reproduces twenty-one folktales narrated in a mountain dialect by a middle-aged Indian village woman, Urmila Devi Sood, or "Urmilaji." The tales are set within the larger story of Kirin Narayan's research in the Himalayan foothill region of Kangra, and of her growing friendship with Urmilaji Sood. In turn, Urmilaji Sood supplements her tales with interpretations of the wisdom that she discerns in their plots. At a moment when the mass-media is flooding through rural India, Urmilaji Sood asserts the value of her tales which have been told and retold across generations. As she says, "Television can't teach you these things." These tales serve as both moral instruction and as beguiling entertainment. The first set of tales, focussing on women's domestic rituals, lays out guidelines for female devotion and virtue. Here are tales of a pious washerwoman who brings the dead to life, a female weevil observing fasts for a better rebirth, a barren woman who adopts a frog and lights ritual oil lamps, and a queen who remains with her husband through twelve arduous years of affliction. The women performing these rituals and listening to the accompanying stories are thought to bring good fortune to their marriages, and long life to their relatives. The second set of tales, associated with passing the time around the fire through long winter nights, are magical adventure tales. Urmilaji Sood tells of a matchmaker who marries a princess off to a lion, God splitting a boy claimed by two families into two selves, a prince's journey to the land of the demons, and a girl transformed into a bird by her stepmother. In an increasingly interconnected world, anthropologists' authority to depict and theorize about distant people's lives is under fire. Kirin Narayan seeks solutions to this crisis in anthropology by locating the exchange of knowledge in a respectful, affectionate collaboration. Through the medium of oral narratives, Urmilaji Sood describes her own life and lives around her, and through the medium of ethnography Kirin Narayan shows how broader conclusions emerge from specific, spirited interactions. Set evocatively amid the changing seasons in a Himalayan foothill village, this pathbreaking book draws a moving portrait of an accomplished woman storyteller. Mondays on the Dark Night of the Moon offers a window into the joys and sorrows of women's changing lives in rural India, and reveals the significance of oral storytelling in nurturing human ties.

Book excerpt: Englisher Wyatt Winslow asks Anna King to go with him on his plane. Will she risk displeasing her bishop father by doing something against their Ordnung? Eighteen-year-old Anna King wants to experience new things before she decides to join her Amish church. Although she enjoys being a midwife, Anna talks with her new friend, Wyatt Winslow, about doing something different. She wonders if college might be a possibility for her to get a nursing degree. She might even return to working as a veterinarian assistant. The handsome Wyatt likes talking with Anna about her future. Although her bishop father wouldn’t like her spending time with Wyatt, her friend Maggie invited him to their weekly Tuesday lunches. Wyatt stays with his Grandma Mattie for the summer because his grandfather died recently. He wants to be there for her and to help his Amish relatives with farm work. Wyatt was surprised and deeply hurt when his college girlfriend dumped him after their graduation. He can’t help being attracted to Anna. He asks her to go flying with him, but will she risk it? Flying is forbidden by her church district. She hasn’t taken her kneeling vows, so what could be the problem? If she asks for permission, her father will definitely say no. Anna doesn’t like to be secretive, but she wants adventure in her life. When his cousin, Clint Lambright, becomes interested in the beautiful Anna and takes her home after a youth get-together, Wyatt isn’t pleased. He doesn’t want the competition, especially since Clint is Amish. Anna notices Wyatt never complains about missing certain things like: electricity, air conditioning, and television. Would Wyatt be able to leave his world to join their Plain church, so they could have a future together? In spite of Clint’s interest in her, Anna feels God might have brought Wyatt to Fields Corner because he could be the one for her.

Download or read book Anson Jones written by Herbert Gambrell and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a New Englander who came penniless to Mexican Texas in 1833 and within the next decade helped to bring his adopted country through the turbulent disorders of settlement, revolution, political experimentation, and statehood. Within a year of his arrival, Anson Jones was successfully practicing medicine, acquiring land, and resolving to avoid politics; but then the Revolution erupted and Jones became a private in the Texas Army, doubling as surgeon at San Jacinto. Military duty done, he resumed medical practice but some acts of the First Congress so irked him that he became a member of the Second and began a political career that lasted from 1837 to 1846 during which he served successively as congressman, minister to the United States, Texas senator, secretary of state, and president of the Republic of Texas. Anson Jones took his own life on January 9, 1858. Told with imagination and insight, Herbert Gambrell's account of the life of Anson Jones is also a colorful and concurrent biography of Texas and its people.

Book excerpt: Author Rachel G. Carrington lays no claim to lofty jobs, higher education, nor grand accomplishments except for a love-filled, multifaceted, family-oriented, poverty-to-plenty life. In The Early Years, the first in a series, she shares her story. As a young teenager, just entering high school in the small town of Denton, Kentucky, Carrington planned to attend college and become a teacher. With coursework geared toward college attendance, she was offered a lucrative scholarship that would help her to attain her goal. However, it took only a single event to send her down a different path. She met a returned World War II veteran who was attempting to pick up the pieces after finding his marriage in irreparable shambles and his children gone. As he struggled, Carrington was there, and they pulled together to clear the many hurdles before them. In this memoir, she tells the story of their journey and how their love and dedication for each other kept moving them forward. Filled with the joys, disappointments, and struggles of a couple, The Early Years narrates how the love of the heavenly Father was the continuous thread that bound Carrington’s life together.
