Lee Magness offers a fresh literary analysis of the suspended ending to the second gospel. In the course of Mark's study, the author describes how open endings have been interpreted by modern literary theory and, secondly, how such endings have been used in ancient literary and biblical texts. A close rereading of Mark concludes the study, in which Magness offers the thesis that Mark's sense of absenceÓ encourages his readers to make sense of that absence for themselves in a positive and powerful way.

This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are five marked quotations from Psalms in the Gospel of Matthew. These are: (1) Ps 91:1–12 in Matt 4:6; (2) Ps 78:2 in Matt 13:35; (3) Ps 8:3 in Matt 21:16; (4) Ps 118:22–23 in Matt 21:42; and (5) Ps 110:1 in Matt 22:44. Piotr Herok argues that the investigated texts are related to each other not only by the presence of the introductory formulas, making clear that a given citation comes from Scripture, but also through mutual thematic convergence, concerning in various degrees king David, the temple, and the theme of Jesus' identity. Thanks to the new literary context, in which the quotations are embedded, Matthew reinterprets them significantly while giving them a new dimension clearly distinguishing them from the rest of the psalm quotations found in his work. This aims at presenting Jesus as not only the Son of David, but first of all the Son of God.

Book excerpt: Second Edition, 332 pages. Contemporary Western churches have been in serious decline for 50 years. Clearly, there is much confusion in and out of the church about Christianity. Is confusion about the gospel of Jesus Christ new to the Modern and/or Postmodern world? When did the confusion begin? These are the questions that have guided this treatment of Mark. Marking God's Word will help you see the gospel with new eyes, to help free you from a perspective that has been obscured by sin and selfishness. Yet, it does not offer a new perspective. Rather, it provides an old perspective that has a long and noble history of reformation and revival. It is simply a walk through the Gospel of Mark that will show you many gospel truths that you are not likely to be familiar with. Think of it as a new adventure down an old path. Come, see Christ again, for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on Mark's Gospel is one of the series of commentaries on the New English Bible designed for use in schools and training colleges, and for the layman. Each volume will comment on one book, or two or three short books, of the Bible, beginning with the New Testament, already published. In each the text will be given in full. Sections of text and commentary alternate, so that the reader does not have to keep two books open, or turn from one part of the book to the other, or refer to a commentary in small type at the foot of the page. Great care is being taken to see that the commentary is suitable to the student and the layman: there is no Greek or Hebrew, and no strings of biblical references, but the commentary does convey the latest and best scholarship. The general editors all have experience of teaching or examining in school and working with adults. There will also be a general introductory volume, Understanding the New Testament, and a volume of maps and plates, The New Testament Illustrated.

One such area is discourse analysis, the study of how language works above the sentence level. With all that is being written these days about theories of studying larger linguistic units, this work is a direct application of one approach to a specific text, the narrative structure of the Gospel of John. When the tools of discourse analysis are employed, the modern day reader can more clearly perceive the plot structure which the author built into his story of Jesus. This analysis is presented with an eye towards applications in biblical exegesis and Bible translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like any other commentary series, The Pillar New Testament Commentary has specific aims. Designed both for serious students and for general readers of the Bible, the PNTC volumes seek above all to make clear the meaning of the text of Scripture as we have it. The scholars writing these volumes interact with the most important, informed contemporary debate yet avoid undue technical detail. Their ideal is a blend of rigorous exegesis and exposition, scholarship and pastoral sensitivity, with an eye alert both to biblical theology and to the contemporary relevance of the Bible. Underlying the approach of this series is the fact that God stands over against us rather than we in judgment of him. When God speaks to us in his Word, those who profess to know him must respond with reverence, a certain fear, a holy joy, and a questing obedience. These attitudes are reflected in the profoundly Christian stance of the PNTC authors toward the text. With these values in place, the Pillar commentaries will continue to be warmly welcomed by pastors, teachers and students everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Preface to Mark is a literary study which, from the standpoint of the newer critical methodologies, explores two questions. First, Bryan attempts to determine what kind of text Mark would have been seen to be, both by its author and by others who encountered it near the time of its writing. He examines whether Mark should be seen as an example of any particular literary type, and if so which. He concludes that a comparison of Mark with other texts of the period leads inevitably to the conclusion that Mark's contemporaries would broadly have characterized his work as a "life." Second, Bryan looks at the evidence that exists to indicate whether Mark, like so much else of its period, was written to be read aloud. He points out ways in which Mark's narrative would have worked particularly well as rhetoric. The first examination of Mark as a whole in the light of contemporary studies of orality and oral transmission, A Preface to Mark not only shows us Mark in its original setting, but also suggests ways in which our own encounter with Mark's text may be significantly enriched. Its accessible style will serve as a good introduction to the Gospel for students as well as the general reader.

Book excerpt: This extract from the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible provides Prinslo’s introduction to and concise commentary on Psalms. The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible presents, in nontechnical language, the best of modern scholarship on each book of the Bible, including the Apocrypha. Reader-friendly commentary complements succinct summaries of each section of the text and will be valuable to scholars, students, and general readers. Rather than attempt a verse-by-verse analysis, these volumes work from larger sense units, highlighting the place of each passage within the overarching biblical story. Commentators focus on the genre of each text—parable, prophetic oracle, legal code, and so on—interpreting within the historical and literary context. The volumes also address major issues within each biblical book—including the range of possible interpretations—and refer readers to the best resources for further discussions.
