Book excerpt: This report examines the efficacy of the agricultural sector reforms that have been implemented in Zambia since 1991/92 when the MMD government of Fred Chiluba was elected to office. On the basis of empirical material gathered in the field, the report demonstrates the limitations of the reform and identifies a number of constraints that have hampered the private sector and made the agricultural marketing system remain relatively underdeveloped.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2022 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: Pass, , course: Marketing, language: English, abstract: HEIs in Zambia have adopted the use of social media in advertising, online learning and also for administrative purposes. Social media has developed in the recent years to a level where it presents itself as the biggest virtual market with the potential to increase geographic markets and revenue for organizations. While cases of HEIs that have used social media marketing for purposes of marketing exist in other places, there is no significant research in the Zambian environment that shows empirical evidence that the use of social media marketing can impact marketing performance in HEIs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of social media marketing on marketing performance in HEIs and the findings are meant to build a model for social media marketing for HEIs in Zambia in (see figure 5.2 in Chapter 5). Data in this research was collected from twelve HEIs using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, since this research is a mixed research with both deductive and inductive arguments. The data collection techniques included a semi structured interview for qualitative data and a semi structured questionnaire for the quantitative data. Data analysis was carried out using different techniques in SPSS for the quantitative data and content analysis using Google analytics for the qualitative data. The implications of the findings in chapter four mean that HEIs in Zambia must begin to use social media not only for administrative or advertising purposes but they must use it effectively as a tool to increase their market share and increase their revenue. The findings and data analysis in this research indicated that social media is effective in marketing HEIs in Zambia, however these institutions must adopt the suggested model in Figure 5.2 in Chapter 5 if they are to enhance social media performance for marketing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Zambia's recent growth has been impressive, it has not been accompanied with adequate job creation. To be sustainable and to create productive employment for its people, growth needs to be accompanied by structural transformation. Such transformation entails a growing share of manufacturing output in the economy. Light Manufacturing in Zambia shows that Zambia has the potential to become regionally competitive in several light manufacturing subsectors by leveraging its comparative advantage in natural resource industries such as agriculture, livestock, and forestry. Light Manufacturing in Zambia has several innovative features. First, it provides in-depth cost comparisons between Zambia and four other countries in Asia and Africa at sector and product levels. Second, the book uses a wide array of quantitative and qualitative techniques to identify key constraints to enterprises and to evaluate differences in the performance of firms across countries. Third, it uses a focused approach to identify country- and industry- specific constraints. Fourth, it highlights the interconnectedness of constraints and solutions. For example, solving the manufacturing input problem requires actions in agriculture, education, and infrastructure. This book suggests directing government policies toward removing constraints in a few of the most promising light manufacturing sectors using practical and innovative solutions inspired by the fast-growing Asian economies whose starting point 20 years ago was not very different from Zambia's today. Growing production of light manufacturing goods would allow Zambia to capture more value from its raw materials and create more jobs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume explores how African agriculture has always had a strong appeal for the people of the Netherlands. This is due to (1) a long-established interest in tropical agriculture going back to the days when Indonesia was a Duth colony; (2) a broad-based desire to help the Third World; and (3) the view that Tropical Africa is highly dependent on agriculture. As practical expertise in Africa and systematic research on African agriculture grew, specialization became both possible and necessary. This volume reflects the specialization in marketing which has been welcomed by economists, geographers and scholars of agricultural marketing. In addition to a general introductory chapter, this book includes five contributions on staple food grains, two on export crops, two on cattle and one on horticulture. Nine of the chapters are country-specific, covering Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cȏte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Zambia.

Book excerpt: Examines the history of post-colonial Kenya's and Zambia's relations with the People's Republic of China from ideological, political, economic and social perspectives. Africa has become a major platform from which to analyse and understand China's growing influence in the global South. Yet, the impact of their historical relationship has been largely overlooked. Through the triangulation of the global Cold War, African history, and Chinese history, this study provides a detailed analysis of China-Africa relations in the second half of the 20th century. Examining the encounters, conflicts, and dynamics of China-Kenya/Zambia relations from the 1950s until the present, as well as the basis on which historical narratives have been constructed, the book presents two contrasting state perspectives underlining the concept of 'African agency'. Driven by a class-based analysis of world revolution, Communist China's foreign policy did not distinguish significantly between Kenya and Zambia. Both countries sought ideological and material support from China in the years after their independence. The Kenya African National Union under both Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Moi pursued a consistently pragmatic foreign agenda, and despite political tensions and ideological rifts with China since the mid-1960s, Sino-Kenyan trade has continued to grow steadily. In contrast, China-Zambia relations under Kenneth Kaunda were cordial despite their political differences. Zambian leaders maintained a relatively high consensus that any alleged Chinese Communist threat would not be allowed to fuel power struggles within their United National Independence Party. Challenging both the widely accepted role of China-Africa's historical lineage, as well as the tendency to assume uniformity in China's relationships across the continent, the author explains the development of these relationships and sheds light on the historical underpinnings - or lack thereof - on contemporary China-Africa relations.
