Book excerpt: ** #8 on The Wall Street Journal best-selling business book list for September 13, 2014** Given the abundance of commercially available energy-saving technologies, talented technologists to apply them, and even generous rebates to help finance them, why in the world aren't more efficiency projects approved? Based on twenty years of experience influencing efficiency decision-making in more than three billion square feet of properties, this author concludes that many more projects would be approved if energy professionals were actually trained to "sell" rather than simply "promote" efficiency. Energy efficiency products, services and programs all require effective selling. Professional sales skills make you more successful at advancing any energy efficiency initiative, regardless of your role in the process. Moreover, you need to think of yourself as a sales professional even if your job title does not include the word "sales." This book contains more than 80 short essays, each of which examines a unique aspect of efficiency-focused professional selling. Many originally appeared on Jewell Insights, the Efficiency Sales Professional Institute's daily email and smartphone blog that offers drip-irrigation reinforcement of concepts borrowed from the award-winning, weeklong Efficiency Sales Professional Certificate Boot Camp. As of this writing, more than one thousand energy professionals had benefited from this training. Hundreds of testimonials confirm the link between efficiency-focused professional selling and increased sales success: higher closing ratios, shorter sales cycles, deeper retrofits, and more. So what does efficiency-focused professional selling look like? 1) The confidence to reframe the benefits of efficiency so that they can be measured with the yardsticks that prospects are already using to measure their success 2) A 15-second elevator pitch that is precisely tuned to a particular prospect's values 3) A one-page narrative proposal delineating efficiency targets, the rationale for change, financial projections, status, and action steps for moving forward 4) A one-page financial summary that offers a clear and compelling treatment of both "popular" and "proper" metrics 5) An ability and willingness to sell utility-cost-financial, non-utility-cost financial, and non-financial benefits 6) An ability to recognize and replace myths with the math and motivation that get projects approved. Whether you are a manufacturer, specifying engineer, contractor, utility program manager or account executive, third-party program implementer, eco-entrepreneur or any other energy-related professional or job-seeker, you are sure to benefit from the insights provided in this book."

Book excerpt: North East utility National Grid (NGrid) is developing a portfolio-scale application of OpenStudio designed to optimize incentive and marketing expenditures for their energy efficiency (EE) programs. NGrid wishes to leverage a combination of geographic information systems (GIS), public records, customer data, and content from the Building Component Library (BCL) to form a JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) input file that is consumed by an OpenStudio-based expert system for automated model generation. A baseline model for each customer building will be automatically tuned using electricity and gas consumption data, and a set of energy conservation measures (ECMs) associated with each NGrid incentive program will be applied to the model. The simulated energy performance and return on investment (ROI) will be compared with customer hurdle rates and available incentives to A) optimize the incentive required to overcome the customer hurdle rate and B) determine if marketing activity associated with the specific ECM is warranted for that particular customer. Repeated across their portfolio, this process will enable NGrid to substantially optimize their marketing and incentive expenditures, targeting those customers that will likely adopt and benefit from specific EE programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At some point in the early 1990s, a change began to occur in the way many demand-side management professionals thought about how to achieve greater energy efficiency in society. Instead of focusing on encouraging individual utility customers to adopt energy efficient measures, they began to see their ultimate objective as permanently removing the market barriers impeding measure adoption, and thus improving the fundamental structure and functioning of energy efficiency markets. Over the course of several years, this basic change in perspective came to be known as market transformation. This issue of the Energy Services Journal reviews the current thinking and experience in the area of market transformation by canvassing the past experience of utilities and government agencies in attempting to transform energy efficiency markets; reviewing a number of important new initiatives; and exploring some of the planning and evaluation issues raised by this new policy objective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marketing Green Building Services: Strategies for Success presents all the information key decision-makers need to respond to the fast-growing market for green buildings, design and construction services and products. Completely updated, revised and expanded from the author’s previous works, this book is the one resource you need to succeed in the green building marketplace. With a sound grounding in contemporary marketing theory and practice, the book assembles hard-to-find information to assist executives and partners in design and construction firms in crafting competitive strategies that build on their firm’ strengths, while shoring up their weaknesses. Since most design and construction firms specialize in particular market sectors, the book systematically examines the important market segments for green buildings. It also presents key business case justifications for green buildings that help architects, engineers and builders to understand client motivations and respond to them with appropriate marketing tactics and communications strategies. The book examines how the green building market is adopting certain new products and design approaches, information that will help manufacturers and product sales teams to craft appropriate marketing strategies. The book also helps owners and developers understand the green building business case and to find out what other leading-edge firms and projects have learned - how to market and sell green buildings and green developments in a highly competitive marketplace.
