Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marked "Personal" ON the evening Of July 13, 1863, two men left their homes, one in Washington and one in Buffalo, under circumstances strangely similar. Each had received a letter in the morning mail, which he had quickly destroyed. Each had given evidence of strong and increasing agitation during the rest of the day, and each had taken leave of his family with tokens Of increased inward excitement, which the mere fact of his being summoned to New York on some unknown business did not seem to warrant, notwithstanding the fact that a dangerous riot was just at that time making a battle-ground Of the metropolis, and threatening the safety of citizen and stranger. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mark So Loda went her way back and forth as she would, and her eyes were cool and her pulses quiet, for all the adulation. Perhaps she knew too much of men to be easily affected; so many came with tangled lives in their hands for her long, pliant fingers to unravel. Lordly Rajputs waited on her gifts, and old, decrepit fakirs with barely a rag that would hold them in decency. Borahs, Parsees, Hindus, Moguls, aye, and wild men from the hills, brought their tangles. And some she touched with Sleep, and some with Laughter, and again some with Fear; and whom she chose to draw she drew, and whom she chose to bind she bound. But of her own life, her own fate, she was all unconscious. When she tried to delve for herself she was hedged on the hither side and the far by cloudy dreams, elusive and baffling, as seems indeed the case with all seers who serve the world with truth faithfully, but who, when they would press it to their personal service, are mocked by vain illusions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Marked Man: Some Episodes in His Life It was but a little village of one long, straggling street, half-a-dozen farms, and intersecting lanes bordered with high hedgerows and briar-tangled ditches - a place of no consequence whatever in itself. Its sole title to importance was its immemorial association with the Delavel family, with the old Hall which had housed the family's head for so many centuries, and with the old church where so much of the family's mortal dust reposed - where floors and walls and dusky windows were covered with the records of its great alliances and its famous deeds. His red hair was tumbled, as if combed with his fingers, and his brow contracted thought fully. He sauntered across to a window, with his hands in his pockets and the stump of a cigar in his mouth. Yet his lounging carriage could not hide his deep chest and square shoulders, and his sluggish ness suggested power in repose rather than laziness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marked "in Haste" A Story of to-Day IN looking over an old diary, I have stumbled upon some curious notes, odds and ends here and there, relating mostly to the American Colony resident in Paris during the years inclusive of 1874 and 1879. The actors are still living; why should my notes alone remain in oblivion? The greatest artists study only from nature. How can an humble pen-portraitist hope to succeed other wise than by following in their footsteps? In a study of real life, creations of imagination are not unlike copies of great originals. Seeming fidelity to nature but distorts the mental vision and accustoms it only to imperfections. Without malice, perhaps without art, I have dared to study from the nude model. Laying aside the hypercritical allusion to Art and great masters, we might say, in more homely English, that one should never spoil a story for relations' sake. My chief solicitude has been to present faithfulrather than flattering likenesses. As photograph ers say, some negatives are so strong that one does not even need sunlight to print clear pictures. In speaking of historical places, simple fidelity has been aimed at. Chateau Ferrieres is well known, and to the courtesy of the distinguished Barons Roths child many owe the pleasure of having seen one of the remarkable palaces of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mark Heffron: A Novel The day was hot and dusty, as only a dry July day can be; half a dozen wilted women and a whimpering baby occupied the car. Mark Heffron glanced hastily around and retreated to the smoker, where he remained until all the passengers who meant to go to bed had done so. The return was also an escape; once in his berth he wondered why he had lingered so long among heavy jokes and twice-told tales. The car was cool and quiet. The odor of hemlock and pine, of wintergreen and sassafras, came in at the window, telling they had left the prairie and were now in the woods. It was a cloudy night, lit by an unseen moon; through its mysterious atmosphere glided the tall forest trees. Mark arranged the pillows under his head and prepared to enjoy the night. "I suppose it is getting back into the old groove which makes me feel as I do," he mused. "I've hunted the world over for thoughts which come with this experience as easily as the lullaby with the cradle."
