In addition, marital satisfaction was positively associated with the longevity of the marital relationship, the age of the spouse at the time of the injury, and the length of the marriage at the time when the injury was sustained. As expected, higher scores of marital satisfaction were associated with higher levels of mental health quality of life. There were no significant relationships between physical health quality of life and marital satisfaction. An analysis of primary stressors show that long-term caregiving spouses continue to report similar types of stressors as indicated in the research literature from caregiving spouses during the first 5 to 8 years post injury. Findings were discussed in relation to implications for practice and additional research.

Book excerpt: This dissertation explored the relationship between brain injury (BI) and level of marital satisfaction post-BI. Specific deficits commonly found in BI were identified that may cause the injured spouse to perceive marital satisfaction differently than the non-injured spouse. Factors associated with marital satisfaction were also examined to determine if certain factors are a source of dissatisfaction among non-injured spouses. It was hypothesized that injured spouses would perceive a higher level of marital satisfaction than non-injured spouses, and that communication would be rated as a source of dissatisfaction among non-injured spouses. Participants consisted of ten married couples in which one spouse had sustained a BI. All couples completed the Couple Satisfaction Scale twice in order to provide a retrospective view of pre-injury marital satisfaction as well as a current view of post-injury marital satisfaction. Data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Two t-tests were conducted and results indicated no significant difference in martial satisfaction between injured and non-injured spouses before BI {t(18) = 0.10, p = 0.92.} or after BI {t(18) = 1.14, p = 0.27}. However, a comparison of mean scores for each questionnaire item rated by the non-injured spouses pre- and post-injury indicated that sexual intimacy and relationships with friends and/or family are factors associated with marital satisfaction that may become less satisfactory post-injury. Interventions that address these issues may help with the adjustment process and prevent a decline in marital satisfaction.

Of particular interest were the experience of the spouses of frontal lobe brain-injured victims and how this particular injury changed their relationship from pre-to-post injury. Coping strategies utilized by the spouses of frontal lobe brain-damaged individuals in dealing with the changes caused by the injury were explored. The research designed involved the administration of a marital satisfaction measure (Marital Satisfaction Inventory-Revised). In-depth interviews were then conducted with two partners who indicated little shift in marital satisfaction following the spouse's injury. This research provided insight into the experience of spouses dealing with the changes in their marriage caused by frontal lobe brain injury, and further into the components that may have contributed to a positive or negative outcome. Research results are expected to contribute to the work of marital and neuropsychological researchers, as well as better assist both psychological and medical professionals in preparing individuals and families for the rehabilitation process following the injury.

During our interview, Heider affirmed a belief that had guided his career since the 1920s, the belief that the study of human relationships is the most important task in which social scientists can engage. Although many social scientists would profess to share this belief, it is nonetheless true that the study of human relationships has been one of the most neglected tasks in the history of the social sciences-including psychology.
