Book excerpt: Abstract: Due to the increase of interethnic marriages among Latinos and Whites it is important to further understand the cultural factors that may influence decreases in marital satisfaction of this population. The purpose of this exploratory study is to add culturally specific consideration to the study of marital satisfaction with White and Latino interethnic couples. The participants of this study consist of fifty couples made up of one Latino spouse and one White spouse. A non-randomized snow ball sampling procedure was used to obtain the participants (n = 100). This research is a quantitative research study, including a dependent variable, marital satisfaction measured by the ENRICH marital satisfaction scale, and independent variables including acculturation, measured by the Abbreviated Multidimensional Acculturation Scale, cultural sensitivity, measured by the Quick Discrimination Index, and machismo and marianismo, measured by the Machismo and Marianismo inventory. Results of this study indicate that there is a difference in marital satisfaction by machismo and marianismo, F (2, 47) = 17.09, p = .000. Multiple regression analysis reveals that, 32% of the difference in marital satisfaction of the Latino spouse can be accounted for by machismo and marianismo. The White spouses' marital satisfaction can be explained by machismo and marianismo at 14%. The results of this study may suggest to counselors that they need to consider machismo and marianismo as possible variable affecting marital satisfaction in working with Latino and White couples.
