Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of age, education, perceived child care support, social support, role conflict, coping and marital adjustment on family functioning as experienced by multiple role women and their spouses. The family has long been recognized as the most important contextual influence in human growth and development. Nurses have been working with families for generations, especially in community and mental health nursing. It is only in the last decade, however, that there has been an increasing interest in family research among nurses reflected in a trend away from individual-focused studies and toward a "whole family" perspective. The theoretical framework for this study was derived from the stress and coping paradigm of Lazarus and Folkman (1984) with support of the linkages offered through the literature review. The correlational design of this investigation was based on a temporally ordered causal recursive model. One hundred multiple role women and their spouses were selected using a computerized random sampling from membership listings of employed members of a large organization. This sample provided a cross-section of many professional disciplines. Descriptive, correlational, and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Family cohesion, as a component of family functioning, had 50% of the variance explained, with family role conflict and marital adjustment being the strongest predictor variables for the total sample of men and women. A comparison of the results by gender revealed that social support and coping were more predictive for men, while interrole conflict was more predictive for women. Marital adjustment was the most potent predictor for both groups. Family cohesion, as a component of family functioning, had 43% of the variance explained for the men, and 52% of the variance explained for the women by the predictor variables. Further examination of group differences revealed that women reported significantly more perceived emotional support from relatives, friends, and neighbors than men, while men reported more perceived emotional and informational support from work supervisors than did the women respondents. Women reported more frequent use of confrontive and fantasy coping patterns than men.

It also determined the influence of shift work on nurses' family life and assessed the influence of marital status on nurses' job satisfaction and family life. Primary data were used in the study. The data were collected among nurses in Osun State, Nigeria. The sample consisted of 322 nurses drawn from two hospitals in Osun State, using random sampling procedure. Three standardized psychological instruments namely: Minnesota Multiphasic Job Satisfaction Questionnaire, Family Life Questionnaire and Shift Work Questionnaire, were used to collect data from the respondents. Data collected were subjected to both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. The results showed that shift work had no significant influence on job satisfaction of nurses (F = 0.114, p0.05). The results further showed that marital status had significant influence on nurses' family life (F = 19.84, p> 0.05). The study concluded that shift work had negative influence on nurses' family life and positive influence on their job satisfact

This book was released on 1990 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kanter (1977) conceptualized five dimensions of the interdependence between work and family: occupational subculture, job absorption, time and timing, rewards and resources, and the emotional climate of work. Each of these dimensions affects the functioning and satisfaction of families and marriages. This research examined how four of these dimensions (occupational subculture, job absorption, time and timing, and the emotional climate) influenced the marital satisfaction of physicians and their spouses. It was hypothesized that physicians and their spouses' marital satisfaction would be affected by each of the four dimensions, as well as the following physicians' work-related activities: number of hours physicians work per week, physicians' working environment, the physician's medical specialty, and the period of time that physicians' medical practice is generally the most successful (age 35-45). Included in this study was the development of a scale to assess the dimensions of work/ family overlap. The results indicated that of the four work/family dimensions, work satisfaction was the only predictor of physicians' marital satisfaction. For physicians' spouses, physicians' work satisfaction and physicians' work involvement were predictors of spouses' marital satisfaction. Within the categories of work-related demographics, age was the only variable impacting the marital satisfaction of physicians and spouses. Physicians experienced the lowest marital satisfaction during ages 35-45. Spouses experienced the lowest level of marital satisfaction during years 35-65. A combined model of the work/family dimensions and work/family demographics indicated that physicians and spouses had different predictor variables of marital satisfaction, depending on work-related activities. Discussion focused on the differences between physicians and their spouses, the limitations of the study, suggestions for future research, and implications for intervention.
