Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The harvesting of wild American ginseng (panax quinquefolium), the gnarled, aromatic herb known for its therapeutic and healing properties, is deeply established in North America and has played an especially vital role in the southern and central Appalachian Mountains. Traded through a trans-Pacific network that connected the region to East Asian markets, ginseng was but one of several medicinal Appalachian plants that entered international webs of exchange. As the production of patent medicines and botanical pharmaceutical products escalated in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, southern Appalachia emerged as the United States' most prolific supplier of many species of medicinal plants. The region achieved this distinction because of its biodiversity and the persistence of certain common rights that guaranteed widespread access to the forested mountainsides, regardless of who owned the land. Following the Civil War, root digging and herb gathering became one of the most important ways landless families and small farmers earned income from the forest commons. This boom influenced class relations, gender roles, forest use, and outside perceptions of Appalachia, and began a widespread renegotiation of common rights that eventually curtailed access to ginseng and other plants. Based on extensive research into the business records of mountain entrepreneurs, country stores, and pharmaceutical companies, Ginseng Diggers: A History of Root and Herb Gathering in Appalachia is the first book to unearth the unique relationship between the Appalachian region and the global trade in medicinal plants. Historian Luke Manget expands our understanding of the gathering commons by exploring how and why Appalachia became the nation's premier purveyor of botanical drugs in the late-nineteenth century and how the trade influenced the way residents of the region interacted with each other and the forests around them.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the 1863 elections in Perry County changed the course of Alabama's role in the Civil War In his fascinating, in-depth study, Bertis D. English analyzes why Perry county, situated in the heart of a violence-prone subregion, enjoyed more peaceful race relations and less bloodshed than several neighboring counties. Choosing an atypical locality as central to his study, English raises questions about factors affecting ethnic disturbances in the Black Belt and elsewhere in Alabama. He also uses Perry County, which he deems an anomalous county, to caution against the tendency of some scholars to make sweeping generalizations about entire regions and subregions. English contends Perry County was a relatively tranquil place with a set of extremely influential African American businessmen, clergy, politicians, and other leaders during Reconstruction. Together with egalitarian or opportunistic white citizens, they headed a successful campaign for black agency and biracial cooperation that few counties in Alabama matched. English also illustrates how a significant number of educational institutions, a high density of African American residents, and an unusually organized and informed African American population were essential factors in forming Perry's character. He likewise traces the development of religion in Perry, the nineteenth-century Baptist capital of Alabama, and the emergence of civil rights in Perry, an underemphasized center of activism during the twentieth century. This well-researched and comprehensive volume illuminates Perry County's history from the various perspectives of its black, interracial, and white inhabitants, amplifying their own voices in a novel way. The narrative includes rich personal details about ordinary and affluent people, both free and unfree, creating a distinctive resource that will be useful to scholars as well as a reference that will serve the needs of students and general readers.

Book excerpt: The story of A. J. Gordon recounts an epic journeyone of faith, character, and pioneering vision. A sterling educator, philanthropist, and herald of heaven, he was a great soul, and his life a resplendent legacy. This impeccably researched biography brings Dr. Gordons world to life, charting his rise to international prominence and his work with great peers and friends like D. L. Moody. Born in rural New Hampshire, he was, in many ways, a renaissance man: an educator, philanthropist, author, magazine editor, antislavery advocate, trustee of Brown University, and the pastor of Clarendon Street Church in Boston. He also led groundbreaking mission work among Bostons immigrant communities, chiefly Chinese and Hebrew groups. - They cherished his work among them. In 1889, Gordon founded the Boston Missionary Training School to give underprivileged young people an education they would not have had otherwise. Tuition was free, and courses (taught by Ivy Leagueeducated instructors) were open to young men and young women of many ethnicities African-American, Chinese, and Hebrew students among them. Gordon stoutly weathered storms of criticism over this, but he persevered. His gifts as an author resonate still, and his many books are now housed in places like the Bodleian Library, Oxford, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.

Book excerpt: The first sustained examination of the impact of religion on contemporary Australian politics reveals the growing influence of the religious right on John Howard and his government. 'God is working for the Liberal Party and this fine, disturbing book arrives just in time to tell us how. An eye-opening exploration of the real politics of Australia.' - David Marr '. a convincing and disturbing picture of the capacity of John Howard, and some of his friends, to co-opt God for their own political agenda.' - Dorothy McRae-McMahon '[spells] out the complicated place of religion in Australian politics today' - Professor John Hewson In the 2004 federal election campaign religion seemed to spring out of nowhere to take centre stage. In fact it was just the latest act in a drama that has been quietly developing for over a decade in Australian politics. Assiduously cultivated by John Howard, an extreme form of conservative Christianity now has real influence on our politicians and their policies. How has American-style evangelicalism become so prominent in secular Australia? Why are abortion, creationism and family values now on the political agenda? Why is religion no longer a private matter for public figures? In God Under Howard Marion Maddox explains how John Howard has harnessed the conservative social agenda and market-based ideology of American fundamentalists in order to stay in power. As a result, she argues that Australia's democratic, egalitarian culture is now under serious assault.

This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in a beautiful four-volume complete catalogue of all known works by the beloved American artist William Merritt Chase A perennial favorite of museum visitors, the works of William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) embody the quintessential characteristics of American Impressionism: outdoor landscapes, a colorful palette, and an energetic brushstroke. He was also a portrait painter of the first rank, a master of still life, a renowned teacher, and a leader of artists' societies. This gorgeous book, the first of a four-volume definitive catalogue, features Chase's stunning paintings in pastel, which constitute a major and previously understudied body of work by the artist; monotypes; painted tiles and plates; watercolors; and prints. Reconstructing Chase's oeuvre is a daunting task, as the artist left few records of any kind, and no documentation of his individual works exists. Furthermore, Chase's paintings and pastels have been forged in great numbers throughout the years, and many of these works still surface on the art market. Making this long-awaited volume even more valuable is a list of every known exhibition of Chase's work during the artist's lifetime, selected examples of major post-1917 exhibitions, and an essay on Chase's innovative pastel technique.
