While in some cases inaccurate by current knowledge, these articles reveal both interesting history and the way Marin residents viewed their county over 100 years ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archaeology of Refuge and Recourse explores the dual practices of refuge and recourse among Indigenous peoples of California. From the eighteenth to the twentieth century, Indigenous Coast Miwok communities in California persisted throughout multiple waves of colonial intrusion. But to what ends? Applying theories of place and landscape, social memory, and mobility to the analysis of six archaeological sites, Tsim D. Schneider argues for a new direction in the archaeology of colonialism. This book offers insight about the critical and ongoing relationships Indigenous people maintained to their homelands despite colonization and systematic destruction of their cultural sites. Schneider is a citizen of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, the sovereign and federally recognized tribe of Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo people whose ancestral homelands and homewaters are the central focus of The Archaeology of Refuge and Recourse. Viewing this colonial narrative from an Indigenous perspective, Schneider focuses on the nearly one quarter of Coast Miwok people who survived the missions and created outlets within and beyond colonial settlements to resist and endure colonialism. Fleeing these colonial missions and other establishments and taking refuge around the San Francisco Bay Area, Coast Miwok people sought to protect their identities by remaining connected to culturally and historically significant places. Mobility and a sense of place further enabled Coast Miwok people to find recourse and make decisions about their future through selective participation in colonial projects. In this book, Tsim D. Schneider argues that these distancing and familiarizing efforts contribute to the resilience of Coast Miwok communities and a sense of relevance and belonging to stolen lands and waters. Facing death, violence, and the pervading uncertainty of change, Indigenous people of the Marin Peninsula balanced the pull and persistence of place against the unknown possibilities of a dynamic colonial landscape and the forward-thinking required to survive. History, change, and the future can be read in the story of Coast Miwok people.

Sample Book Insights: #1 My mother has described to me the earth, and how it is composed of tectonic plates that move hundreds of miles with ease. She has explained to me that the universe exists in two streams: our tangible, everyday reality, and a separate, inner place of the imagination and spirit. #2 My mother’s travel habit began in the grip of her descent into psychosis three decades ago, when she was nearly forty and I was ten. She would jet from Hawaii to North Africa to Australia, and then return periodically to many of those places over the next several years. #3 Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that causes distortions in perception, thought, and emotion. It arises from chemical and physical processes inside the brain. We have not yet fully grasped how the brain creates perception, thought, and emotion. #4 Schizophrenia is a syndrome that consists of symptoms that typically occur together and are causally linked. It is not a disease as the term is generally understood, but rather a constellation of symptoms that gradually fade into normalcy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title takes a calendrical approach to illuminating the history of Latinos and life in the United States and adds more value than a simple "this day in history" through primary source excerpts and resources for further research. Latino/a history has been relatively slow in gaining recognition despite the population's rich and varied history. Engaging and informative, Latino History Day by Day: A Reference Guide to Events will help address that oversight. Much more than just a "this-day-in-history" list, the guide describes important events in Latino/a history, augmenting many entries with a brief excerpt from a primary document. All entries include two annotated books and websites as key resources for follow up. The day-to-day reference is organized by the 365 days of the year with each day drawing from events that span several hundred years of Latino/a history, from Mexican Americans to Puerto Ricans to Cuban Americans. With this guide in hand, teachers will be able to more easily incorporate Latino/a history into their classes. Students will find the book an easy-to-use guide to the Latino/a past and an ideal starting place for research.

Book excerpt: A racy, classy political thriller ...' - Jennifer Byrne In 2005, Marin Katich, living in Croatia under an alias, is being watched. Before the year is out, he has been assaulted, arrested, charged with serious war crimes and locked up in Scheveningen Prison in The Hague, waiting for his case to come before the International War Crimes Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. In Sydney, Anna Rosen, a freelance journalist, is emailed photos of a man she knows to be dead - gunned down in a brutal ambush in Bosnia over a decade ago. A man she'd once loved but who had betrayed her. Is it possible that the photos really are of Marin Katich? And if so, what the hell had happened in 1992? From Croatia to The Hague to Bosnia and Herzegovina to Sydney, Anna and Marin's intertwined history fuels her determination to tear apart, piece by piece, his secrets, while continuing to keep her own. In a dangerous pursuit of justice and revenge, navigating the murky world of national and international secret agencies and those who would still be warlords, Anna fights for what she believes in and for those she loves. Tony Jones, one of Australia's most admired journalists, blurs the lines between fiction and political reality, creating a page-turning, intriguing and gripping thriller. 'A political thriller in the Robert Harris mould.' - Jennifer Byrne on The Twentieth Man 'Extremely readable, fascinating and very cleverly done.' - AustralianCrimeFiction.org on The Twentieth Man
