Book Synopsis Mariners’ Adaptive Performance under Stress by : Athanassiou, Georgios
Download or read book Mariners’ Adaptive Performance under Stress written by Athanassiou, Georgios and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mariners´ Adaptive Performance under Stress” focuses on the research question of direct and indirect effects of varying conditions of task-integral cognitive and affective demands on adaptive performance of novice bridge operators. The work draws theoretically on contextual models of cognition as well as appraisal theoretical frameworks of affect elicitation and experience. The respective research hypotheses reflect expected individual and team-related adaptive responses at and after the onset of ambiguous trigger events with a prominent affective component when performing a complex ship management task. Adaptive performance was measured by means of behavioural parameters with a relevance to normal and critical operations: Visual behaviour of officers of the watch, Threat and Error Management and Non-Technical Skill performance of bridge crews, and risk-related crew decision-making. Additional surveys were employed for the assessment of the task-related affective states and trigger event appraisals. The results suggest that the observed adaptive performance, especially on the team level, is strongly affected by the co-occurrence of constraining context conditions and the conspicuousness of the affective component of emerging events. Consequently, the work argues for an integrated approach towards combining cognition and affect for modelling human behaviour in dynamic environments. It showcases the need for further research of cognition, affect and their combined effects in the naturalistic context of work in order to comprehend the behaviour of the human element in practice beyond the obscuring veil of hindsight and outcome-based evaluations.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together leading researchers to celebrate the significant contributions of Peter Grabosky to the field of Criminology, and in particular his work developing and adapting regulatory theory to the study of policing and security. Over the past three decades, his path-breaking theoretical and empirical research has contributed to a burgeoning literature on the myriad ways regulatory systems drive state and non-state interactions in an effort to control crime. This collection of essays showcases Grabosky’s pioneering treatment of key regulatory concepts as they relate to such interactions, and illustrate how his work has been instrumental in shaping contemporary scholarship and practice around the governance of security. Revisiting the work of a key figure in the field, this book will be of interest to criminologists, sociologists, socio-legal studies and those engaged with security and policy studies.

Book Synopsis Transnational Modern Languages by : Jennifer Burns
Download or read book Transnational Modern Languages written by Jennifer Burns and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Open Access edition of this book will be available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library. In a world increasingly defined by the transnational and translingual, and by the pressures of globalization, it has become difficult to study culture as primarily a national phenomenon. A Handbook offers students across Modern Languages an introduction to the kind of methodological questions they need to look at culture transnationally. Each of the short essays takes a key concept in cultural study and suggests how it might be used to explore and illuminate some aspect of identity, mobility, translation, and cultural exchange across borders. The authors range over different language areas and their wide chronological reach provides broad coverage, as well as a flexible and practical methodology for studying cultures in a transnational framework. The essays show that an inclusive, transnational vision and practice of Modern Languages is central to understanding human interaction in an inclusive, globalized society. A Handbook stands as an effective and necessary theoretical and thematically diverse glossary and companion to the ‘national’ volumes in the series.
