Book excerpt: "The present report is the first attempt to review and synthesize existing literature for the priority habitats listed in decision VIII/24, which include seamounts, cold-water coral reefs, hydrothermal vents and other ecosystems in areas beyond national jurisdiction. The report presents, in synthesized format, information about the distribution, status and trends (where available), as well as the threats facing these ecosystems. Information about the functioning of these ecosystems and the ecology of associated species is also presented. Finally, the report reviews work that has been undertaken to identify priority conservation areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction"--P. 9.

Book excerpt: To meet Canada's obligations to the United Nations (UN) Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), creation of a Marine Protected Areas Network (MPAN) following UN stipulated steps is required. This paper details the completion of step three from the UN CBD, which calls for a process to identify priority conservation areas as planning inputs to the MPAN. This paper details the approach taken to delineate PCAs within the Western Arctic Bioregion. Twenty three (23) PCAs were delineated for the bioregion and a conservation objective for the Marine Protected Area Network in this bioregion was established.

Book excerpt: MPA Federal Advisory Committee's recommendations for a simplified system for categorizing MPAs in the United States, released in response to the Draft Framework for Developing a National System of MPAs. Addresses management criteria that could serve as entry criteria or evaluative criteria for sites admitted to the System; priority conservation objectives under which existing and new areas would be identified over time for natural heritage, cultural heritage, and sustainable production purposes; and a set of user-friendly MPA categories based on site purpose and type of protection. These recommendations were developed in response to the Committee's ad hoc charge from the Departments of Commerce and the Interior delivered at an April 2007 MPA FAC meeting in Arlington, Virginia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the ocean-and the resources within-seem limitless, there is clear evidence that human impacts such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution disrupt marine ecosystems and threaten the long-term productivity of the seas. Declining yields in many fisheries and decay of treasured marine habitats, such as coral reefs, has heightened interest in establishing a comprehensive system of marine protected areas (MPAs)-areas designated for special protection to enhance the management of marine resources. Therefore, there is an urgent need to evaluate how MPAs can be employed in the United States and internationally as tools to support specific conservation needs of marine and coastal waters. Marine Protected Areas compares conventional management of marine resources with proposals to augment these management strategies with a system of protected areas. The volume argues that implementation of MPAs should be incremental and adaptive, through the design of areas not only to conserve resources, but also to help us learn how to manage marine species more effectively.

To mitigate human pressure, governments have committed to protecting 10% of their oceans/coasts as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Determining the most effective placement of MPAs for conserving biodiversity should be done at a network scale such that MPA networks are placed to provide the greatest protection for multiple species. I propose a methodology to determine priority conservation areas for distinct species assemblages, located at different depths, to determine MPA network placement, using the Pacific Ocean in Canada as a case study. I found dispersal ability had a larger impact on MPA network configuration for species spending a long time as larvae compared to species spending a short time as larvae, and that climate change is likely to shift priority-area locations. The methodology proposed for MPA design relies on limited data and can be applied to other regions and ecosystems.

Book excerpt: The world urgently needs a comprehensive system of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to conserve biodiversity and to help rebuild the productivity of the oceans. The aim of these Guidelines is to help countries establish systems of MPAs as a key component of integrated management of coastal and marine areas and as part of their sustainable development. The various actions to make an effective MPA are set out, from early planning stages to implementation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process to plan a network of marine protected areas in the Canadian Arctic was initiated in the Western Arctic Bioregion. A biogeographic classification system was developed to divide the Western Arctic Bioregion into types of habitats or ecosystems referred to as eco-units. The Bioregion was divided into 18 eco-units. Dominant ecosystem features, sea-ice data, bathymetric data, sills and water mass information were the primary inputs used to delineate the eco-units. The Western Arctic Bioregion currently contains 22 areas identified during previous science peer reviews as being ecologically and biologically significant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IUCN's Protected Areas Management Categories, which classify protected areas according to their management objectives, are today accepted as the benchmark for defining, recording, and classifying protected areas. They are recognized by international bodies such as the United Nations as well as many national governments. As a result, they are increasingly being incorporated into government legislation. These guidelines provide as much clarity as possible regarding the meaning and application of the Categories. They describe the definition of the Categories and discuss application in particular biomes and management approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marine environment does not naturally respect arbitrary international boundaries. The establishment and management of transboundary marine protected areas therefore presents major governance challenges. This book analyses a series of marine transboundary conservation initiatives embedded in varying contextual situations to examine the underlying reasons for their success or failure. Utilising an adapted ‘pathways of influence’ framework, it provides insights into the development of marine transboundary conservation initiatives looking at the effectiveness of international rules, international norms and discourse, market forces and direct access to policy making. Examples come from a wide range of jurisdictions, including territorial seas, continental shelves, exclusive economic zones and areas beyond national jurisdiction. Case studies include initiatives in the Coral Triangle, West Africa, Central America, the Wadden Sea, the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. In addition the authors assess the potential for developing wider international cooperation as a result of relationships forged though involvement within these marine transboundary conservation initiatives.
