Book Synopsis Marine Geological and Geophysical Atlas of the Circum-Antarctic to 30 degrees S by : Dennis E. Hayes
Download or read book Marine Geological and Geophysical Atlas of the Circum-Antarctic to 30 degrees S written by Dennis E. Hayes and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1991-01-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 54. This atlas and explanatory text were compiled under the sponsorship of the Division of Polar Programs (DPP) of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Relatively little interpretation has been incorporated into the synthesis beyond that implicit in the publications used, that inherent in the various analyses procedures required, or that required to reconcile apparently discrepant data or interpretations. This series of maps does, however, represent considerably more than a compilation of published results. The maps also incorporate extensive new and unpublished geological and geophysical data as well as many invaluable data that have appeared previously only in the gray literature (e.g., national and international agency and institutional technical reports).

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of the Antarctic by : Beau Riffenburgh
Download or read book Encyclopedia of the Antarctic written by Beau Riffenburgh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-10-25 with total page 1274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antarctic is unique, geographically, politically, and scientifically. It is the most remote, hostile, and dangerous continent, while at the same time it is the most pristine and least developed. Antarctica is the only major part of the Earth's landmass not directly governed by one nation, but under the control of a Treaty, with a multitude of acceding nations. The Encyclopedia of the Antarctic brings together large quantities of information on the wide variety of factors, issues and individuals influencing and relating to the Antarctic. No comparable book currently exists for this region. The Encyclopedia of the Antarctic discusses scientific activities and topics, but the 'human element' is also a significant part of the work, with entries on history, politics, legal issues, national research programs, scientific bases, historic huts, the United Nation's 'Question of Antarctica,' compliance with the Environmental Protocol, and tourism.
Book Synopsis Gravitational Atlas of Antarctica by : Jaroslav Klokočník
Download or read book Gravitational Atlas of Antarctica written by Jaroslav Klokočník and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents maps of Antarctica, exploring various aspects of its disturbing geopotential and based on the EIGEN 6C4 model, arguably the best gravitational field model currently available. It also provides the latest data on Antarctica’s bedrock topography according to Bedmap 2. In an extensive series of segment maps the book highlights (i) a gravity anomaly (disturbance), (ii) the Marussi tensor of the second derivatives of the disturbing geopotential, (iii) invariants and their ratios, (iv) the strike angle, and (v) virtual deformations. Due to their various degrees of sensitivity to the density contrasts of causative bodies under the Earth’s surface, these maps provide many details that have a range of potential geo-applications. They guide the reader through the entire continent, in segments divided by 30 degrees of longitude, and through geodetic latitudes of between 60 and 90 degrees south. Each segment is complemented by detailed zoom-in maps for selected localities of special interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atlas consists of 136 topographic maps derived from satellite radar altimetry (Geosat and ERS-1 data). Each map is presented together with a description of glaciologic and topographic features. The main section is preceded by an introduction and three up-to-date topics and followed by applications. Applications are in monitoring changes in Antarctic glaciers, ice streams and ice shelves, and in detailed regional studies of outlet glaciers of the inland ice. The reader will also find index maps, an exhaustive list of references on related subjects in glaciology, geodesy, geomathematics, remote sensing, and an index of the Antarctic place names.

Book Synopsis Antarctic Environments and Resources by : J.D. Hansom
Download or read book Antarctic Environments and Resources written by J.D. Hansom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antarctica is no longer a 'pole apart'. From a scientific perspective, the Antarctic ice sheet, ocean and climate systems are intimately linked with the global climate and are now seen to be of international significance for understanding climate change. From an economic perspective, the Antarctic is perceived to have great potential as a source of marine resources although the extent of speculated mineral and hydrocarbon resources is unknown. From a conservation perspective, the continent of Antarctica represents the ideal image of unspoiled wilderness. Antarctic Environments and Resources is an accessible and timely new geography of the Antarctic which examines the differing and sometimes conflicting interests in the great southern continent, the Southern Ocean and the subantarctic islands against a background of the physical and natural systems of the region and their interactions. It charts the development of human involvement in the area, focusing on the exploitation of resources from early sealing to modern fisheries, tourism and science, and it assesses the consequent impacts on the natural environment. The text also reviews the emerging framework for future environmental management developed under the Antarctic Treaty System. This is an ideal text for undergraduates studying glacial geomorphology, environmental management, polar regions and the Antarctic.
